No Frills Frisco

The staff at this hotel were very friendly and helpful, and the location was perfect. Right next door to the Chinatown Gate, a few blocks from Union Square and the city sightseeing buses have a stop right outside the hotel. The bed was comfortable, the shower was strong and hot and the bathroom was clean. There were no amenities to speak of except wi-fi, and the room had a very musty smell when we first arrived. Luckily the window opened right up into Grant Ave, so after a while it wasn't a problem. As far as value in San Francisco goes this ticked m boxes as we were only there for two nights. I would book another short stay here in future as I'm not bothered about the 'frills' when travelling!

great location, great price

This is an incredible place to stay. Its location is the best thing about the hotel. Although the rooms are clean and the staff is very helpful, it is an old building. But the experience of staying here was very good. They were really helpful, and you can get on a bus or the BART to go to any part of the city from this central location.

an ok place for the price

After reading the reviews, I was well prepared as to what I should expect at this hotel. Even though the one review about having to share a bathroom and not having air conditioning scared me, I pushed back my fears and focused on the price deal. Obviously, this is not the Hilton, but you get what you pay for, and at $65 a night in the middle of downtown, you can't beat this. It's not a roach motel. It was clean, no bed begs (I checked!!) and I felt secure. Yes the elevator is rickety, but it's an old building and it wasn't that scary. The room is small, but if you're traveling alone or with one other person, it really isn't so bad. I've stayed in smaller hotel rooms where there wasn't even room for a suitcase. I found it rather cozy. I was nervous about it not having air conditioning, but then I realized it get's pretty cool by the bay at night, so I never even broke a sweat. I bought myself a small fan to use, only because I can't sleep without one, and that worked just fine. The staff is kinda weird, nice, but weird. Maybe it's because I'm not Chinese, but oh well, I'm fairly easy to please and not demanding at all. I would stay here again and recommend it to others, making sure I warn them of the size first, as that might surprise someone who isn't used to small hotel rooms.

i had a great time.

i was worried for having read other reviews on this hotel. but the room was very clean, no bad smell. they made the bed everyday and left clean towels. the location was perfect! i was on the 5th floor but could get a free wifi with the hotel nearby(!!) so i did not have to leave the room to use the internet, either. it was so inexpensive and i had a very very good stay.

Excellent Location

Location is the best thing of this hotel, the rooms are average, the cleanness is good, the staff is very helpful and kindly, just the elevator it's a little scary, but nothing to worry. If you are tight in your budget and want to be in a centric hotel, this is the one, next time, I will return to this hotel.

First of all recieved a receipt for $148. but they charged my card $194. Parking is an extra 23. per day. Continental breakfast another $4. There were no extras, no amenities of any kind! This hotel is NOT a "Value" hotel. I will not stay there again. I do not like hidden prices! Priceing is unhonest at the least.

Excellent location!

The room was small, but very clean and comfortable. The location is outstanding and a perfect place to stay for a couple of nights "getaway" to SF. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. I am glad we stayed there.

Excellent Location, VERY Reasonable Price!

In amongst the expensive hotels sits the Astoria Hotel at the crossroads of San Francisco's shopping district and Chinatown. For its location, it is one of the best values in The City. The rooms are small and compact, but very clean, warm and comfortable. You are a short walk from the Financial District, Union Square, Nob Hill, Yerba Buena Park, the Metreon and the Ferry Building. For the price, this hotel and its location cannot be beat. The front doors are locked at night. You have to wake the night manager sleeping on the lobby's sofa to go out late at night.

Time-saving tip: In Hotel

The free wifi is supposedly limited to the conference room on the second floor. HOWEVER, the rooms just above the conference room on the 3rd floor (e.g., room 302 and the rooms on either side of it) receive excellent in-room wifi signals! No need to leave your room.
