Intimate boutique hotel with outdoor pool just steps from Union Square

This Union Square mainstay, dating back to 1908, mixes old and new under one roof. Older rooms bring with them a hearty dose of history; newer accommodations, completed in the last 15 years, are more spacious and have upgraded amenities. There's an outdoor pool -- a rarity for downtown San Francisco -- a heated sauna and an on-site barbershop. One of the city's most popular taverns, The Daily Grill, is located on the ground floor.

Highlights
  • Serene outdoor pool with heated sauna
  • Stroll to some of the best shopping in town
  • Stellar on-site restaurant, The Daily Grill, serves up American classics.
  • On-site barbershop
  • Discount coupons to nearby Macy's
Rooms

The Handlery has 377 rooms in all -- 284 in the "historic" section of the hotel, and 93 in a newer and recently renovated part. Newer rooms, dubbed "Premier," measure 450 square feet and look out on the outdoor pool deck. They also include bathrobes and electric shoe polishers. The older rooms, dubbed "Historic," are part of the original 1908 construction and include mini-refrigerators, in-room safes and ironing boards. Some of the latter rooms offer views of the San Francisco skyline; Wi-Fi is available in all (fees apply).

Features

The hotel has been family owned and operated since the 1920s.

Service has been a strongpoint for all of those years; today the property employs multi-lingual concierges who arrange everything from dinner reservations to babysitter services. Other exceptional services include same-day laundry and dry-cleaning, as well as the on-site barber shop.

All guests have access to a Club One fitness center one block from the hotel (fees apply).

Grab a burger and a beer at The Daily Grill, a swanky but reliable bar on the ground floor. The weekend brunch here is rated among the best in the city (try the Bloody Mary and understand why).

unbeatable location

We always stay there when I am in SF visiting my daughter. Everyone is very nice and the hotel is right in the heart of Union Square - 1/2 block from the cable car and in the center of upscale shopping. It is very easy to walk everywhere and there is good public transportation. The only sour note is the reception desk at the Daily Grill, which is their associated restaurant - they tend to get hopelessly confused and rude. However, the food is great and the servers are uniformly nice - it is primarily a steakhouse, but there are many great choices for vegetarians and the vegetable are always prepared superbly. We stay there 3 or 4 times a year for the past 4 years, so obviously I like the place and it is much more economical than the other upscale hotels in that area.

Service outstanding!

The concierge was great, gave us great ideas, appropriate travel times etc. and recommendations of sequences of activities. The restaurant has great breakfasts (careful with the cream cheese, though; ours had mold one day) and our 1 room service meal was good!

Good Business trip

Half a block from Union Square and in a very quiet location. Check in was fast and the people were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Room overlooked O'Farley street and minimal noise was to be heard. A/C and heat in the room. Would stay there again without exception.

Great Location

The hotel was in a really great location in the heart of union square. There are lots of places to eat and shop within walking distance. The staff was very friendly and the hotel was clean. I suggest that you ask for a room facing the inside of the hotel if you prefer quiet nights. The first night I had a room facing the street, and it was incredibly noisy so it was difficult to sleep. The staff was very accommodating in moving my belongings to a new room that was much quieter and bigger than the first room for the next night. Overall, very enjoyable.

Well located

Hotel is in a great location. Dining room is fine. next door is lefty O'Doul's. very good bar. We had 2 room at the hotel. Both were supposed to be queen sized beds. One only had a double, but other than that the accomodations were excellent. Very clean. If you rent a car find somewhere else to park as it costs $41 a night in the hotel garage. Also the neighborhood is full of panhandlers. The doorman was excellent, full of hints. The hotel is at Union Square, the heart of the downtown and close to all attractions.

San Francisco 2009

San Francisco is a "been there done that type" of city. We enjoyed our visit. The food was expensive (expected that), but the quality was not what I expected. Lots of Asian food to be found. Dim Sum is an experience. The staff at the Handerly was awesome. We upgraded to the club rooms which was a good idea. TAKE A ROOM ON THE POOL/COURTYARD SIDE. The city side was way too noisy late at night and early morning. They were even willing to change our rooms, but i did not do it. if there on a weekend, go to the ferry building to sample all of the fruits and veggies from the surrounding farms. Biking the golden gate bridge is a must!!! Just a few places that you will have to walk your bike up. Overall an memorable experience.Only if you have a car, go the Cliff House area to see the beach. sunset over the Pacific was an experience for this east coast girl.(the bus fare and time spent on bus is not really worth it.)

Unbeatable location for the price

Hotel was great. Very close to Union Square. Maybe a half block away. Staff was very friendly and pleasant . Concierge gave a great restaurant recommendation. Bellhop was also very helpful telling us where to go ,and especially, areas to avoid . Room was very clean and up to date and very quiet Bed very comfortable. We had a week in California and spent our first night there. Because of a change in plans during our stay we found ourselves with an extra day in San Francisco just before we left. So we booked our last night there, too. It was just as pleasant as the first. Have been to San Fransisco many times over a number of years and stayed in a lot of different hotels and would definitely stay in this one again
