Intimate boutique hotel with outdoor pool just steps from Union Square

This Union Square mainstay, dating back to 1908, mixes old and new under one roof. Older rooms bring with them a hearty dose of history; newer accommodations, completed in the last 15 years, are more spacious and have upgraded amenities. There's an outdoor pool -- a rarity for downtown San Francisco -- a heated sauna and an on-site barbershop. One of the city's most popular taverns, The Daily Grill, is located on the ground floor.

Highlights
  • Serene outdoor pool with heated sauna
  • Stroll to some of the best shopping in town
  • Stellar on-site restaurant, The Daily Grill, serves up American classics.
  • On-site barbershop
  • Discount coupons to nearby Macy's
Rooms

The Handlery has 377 rooms in all -- 284 in the "historic" section of the hotel, and 93 in a newer and recently renovated part. Newer rooms, dubbed "Premier," measure 450 square feet and look out on the outdoor pool deck. They also include bathrobes and electric shoe polishers. The older rooms, dubbed "Historic," are part of the original 1908 construction and include mini-refrigerators, in-room safes and ironing boards. Some of the latter rooms offer views of the San Francisco skyline; Wi-Fi is available in all (fees apply).

Features

The hotel has been family owned and operated since the 1920s.

Service has been a strongpoint for all of those years; today the property employs multi-lingual concierges who arrange everything from dinner reservations to babysitter services. Other exceptional services include same-day laundry and dry-cleaning, as well as the on-site barber shop.

All guests have access to a Club One fitness center one block from the hotel (fees apply).

Grab a burger and a beer at The Daily Grill, a swanky but reliable bar on the ground floor. The weekend brunch here is rated among the best in the city (try the Bloody Mary and understand why).

Great Location

I felt that it was a very nice hotel, however the room was so small. The room was clean with the exception of the night stand which didn't seem to be dusted for weeks. The location was very good for shopping and close to all transportation. The staff was very courteous and helpful.

Great location!

Hotel staff was wonderful! We arrived at 10am hoping to leave our bags with the front desk staff until check-in at 3pm, but were told we could check in at that time! Room was clean, but a little small; regardless, it was perfect for what we needed - a place to sleep and shower. Our only complaint is that the hallways are carpeted and seem to have absorbed some odors over time... just a little musty; almost as if someone had a dog there. The room itself did not have an odor though!

Fantastic First California experience

The Handlery was our choice of hotel in San Francisco because it was rated very well and we wanted to stay near Union Square. We were not disappointed at all. You are right in the middle of the action. The busy street sounds, people in motion, what a great New York style city. I will definitely go back to San Francisco and would stay in the Handlery again. The Hotel has the feel of 1930's Europe. The room is somewhat small but comfortable. We were on the eighth floor and noticed that there are no screens on the windows. I guess that is because they have no bugs, unlike here in Florida where we are constantly pestered by some flying or crawling insect. I actually opened the window and stuck my head out and took pictures of the ground straight down eight stories(not street view, inside view). That was cool and fun. The hotel is comfortable but can feel a little warm sometimes, especially after you return from a cool day in the city. It seems that there is no AC in the hotel, however, it is really not needed since it is only in the 70's in the afternoon. If I were to rate Handlery with a letter grade, I would give the hotel an A. P.S. don't forget to find LEFTY O'DOULS Irish pub a few doors down. It is very inexpensive and has great food. Also look up ZA Pizza Arts. It is a small Pizza Cafe with the best pizza and two great beers: Fat Tire, and San Francisco Liberty Ale. Bring your money with you and prepare to leave your heart behind. I miss it so much already.

Great location

The location was very good. Access to cable cars, street cars and transportation was excellent. The standard room was very small, however, the bath shower area was good. The adjacent Grill was very convenient and a good place to eat. Union Square and great shopping was within walking distance. You can walk down Powell street to Market and catch the F street car to Fishermans warf and back.

Great staff

5 minutes after checking in, we complained about the size of the "queen" bed. John, the night manager, hooked us up with a beautiful suite with a king sized bed. It was such a lovely evening thanks to John :)

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Take the BART from the airport to the hotel. It's a short walk and only about $8, instead of a ridiculous cab fare.

Very pleased!

First time staying at this hotel and second time visiting San Fran. Staff was very friendly and accomodating. The only thing that wasnt perfect was the bed. It was stiff and provided moderate discomfort upon awakening, but that was overshadowed by this great city, great location within the city, and the great food.

Great Location and staff!!

This hotel is less than 1/2 a block from union square!! It pretty much overlooks it. Great location and very nice rooms. It was our anniversary and they made it extra special by giving us a bottle of wine and a room overlooking union square. Tena at the front desk was the best!! We have stayed at a few different hotels in SF and I would definitely come back to this one.

Sotto Mare, near the Italian District, has the best clam chowder, the best we can find! And Kokkari is the best meal you will find anywhere, close to the Ferry building. Yum!!
