Intimate boutique hotel with outdoor pool just steps from Union Square

This Union Square mainstay, dating back to 1908, mixes old and new under one roof. Older rooms bring with them a hearty dose of history; newer accommodations, completed in the last 15 years, are more spacious and have upgraded amenities. There's an outdoor pool -- a rarity for downtown San Francisco -- a heated sauna and an on-site barbershop. One of the city's most popular taverns, The Daily Grill, is located on the ground floor.

Highlights
  • Serene outdoor pool with heated sauna
  • Stroll to some of the best shopping in town
  • Stellar on-site restaurant, The Daily Grill, serves up American classics.
  • On-site barbershop
  • Discount coupons to nearby Macy's
Rooms

The Handlery has 377 rooms in all -- 284 in the "historic" section of the hotel, and 93 in a newer and recently renovated part. Newer rooms, dubbed "Premier," measure 450 square feet and look out on the outdoor pool deck. They also include bathrobes and electric shoe polishers. The older rooms, dubbed "Historic," are part of the original 1908 construction and include mini-refrigerators, in-room safes and ironing boards. Some of the latter rooms offer views of the San Francisco skyline; Wi-Fi is available in all (fees apply).

Features

The hotel has been family owned and operated since the 1920s.

Service has been a strongpoint for all of those years; today the property employs multi-lingual concierges who arrange everything from dinner reservations to babysitter services. Other exceptional services include same-day laundry and dry-cleaning, as well as the on-site barber shop.

All guests have access to a Club One fitness center one block from the hotel (fees apply).

Grab a burger and a beer at The Daily Grill, a swanky but reliable bar on the ground floor. The weekend brunch here is rated among the best in the city (try the Bloody Mary and understand why).

Great Location

This hotel had very good amenities. The location was downtown Union Square and there was very good shopping nearby. It was very clean other than the fact that the carpet could have used a good steaming. There was a safe in the room. This location was convenient to access of cable cars and public transportation as well.

Do not venture too far outside of Union Square - there are some sketchy-looking people in the Tenderloin district.

Great quality and value for cheap!

This hotel was literally only a half block from Union square. It was decorated very nicely. I loved our room! Yet it was really cheap, considering all the above aspects.

There's a really good & affordable breakfast/lunch restaurant around the corner on Mason called Cafe Mason, if you miss the breakfast at the hotel restaurant.

Very pleased!

First time staying at this hotel and second time visiting San Fran. Staff was very friendly and accomodating. The only thing that wasnt perfect was the bed. It was stiff and provided moderate discomfort upon awakening, but that was overshadowed by this great city, great location within the city, and the great food.

Perfect Stay

At check in there was a delay, as there was a conference in town the prior evening. The staff upgraded me to a suite at no extra charge without me even negotiating the upgrade. They were very gracious and attentive to every need I had during my two week stay. The service was helpful and friendly. The rooms in this hotel are clean and welcoming with ample room and seating. The hotel is less than a block from Union Square Park. It is a hidden gem among the most urban part of San Francisco. I plan to stay here every time I go to the Northern California area.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

This hotel is in the Financial District and shopping is plentiful.. only a block from the 7 story Macy's. Chinatown is only a few blocks up Grant Street. The Muni station is a short walk down Powell which is the transportation system which will take you anywhere.

New section of Handlery very elegant

For a small extra fee, I upgraded to a VIP room in the newer section of the hotel, and it was more than worth it. The room was large and filled with every amenity one could think of. It was super comfortable, with a king bed, covered with large, comfy pillows. There was a nice balcony overlooking the pool area. Beautiful bath and dressing area, bathrobe provided, iron and ironing board, hair dryer, shoe buffer, wireless access, cable TV and movies... everything one could want in a hotel room! A very alert and helpful staff added to the enjoyment of my stay. And the Union Square location is just about perfect. I will definitely stay there again!

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

Only a block from San Francisco's theater district, one could easily attend the theater, without taking a cab. Not to mention dinner beforehand, with all the terrific restaurants nearby. There is even a two-for-one theatrical ticket booth one half-block from the hotel, in Union Square, making it all that much more affordable!

Great Location

The Handlery Hotel offers a great location in the heart of Union Square. It is very clean and cozy and offers a great place to eat, The Daily Grill with a great bar and sports to watch. Everything was handled quickly and efficiently throughout my stay. The only suggestion I would make is to reduce or eliminate the cost of the internet access. This would make it more attractive to business customers. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Convenient for business and play

The Handlery Union Square is in an ideal location. It was easy to get onto the freeway to get to business meetings, and only a short walk to wonderful resturaunts and shopping. The room was small but the bed was comfortable. There were only 2 inconveniences--the parking structure is at the back of the building with stairs on the way to the lobby, so handling my large rolling laptop case was a challenge (suggestion: drop off luggage with the bellman at the hotel entrance on Geary Street before parking). The other inconvenience was having to pay for an internet connection ($9.95 per day), but I suppose the hotel rate compensates for that a bit. I found the staff to be very accommodating and upbeat. I would consider staying at the Handlery again on an upcoming return to San Francisco.

Great location

The Handlery Union Square was perfect for our family's visit to San Francisco. The rooms were small but were nicely decorated. The staff was extremely accommodating. We needed two rooms and our request to have them adjoining was met in spite of late notice. The location was great in that it was right off Union Square and so close to shopping, dining, night life, and the trolley. The continental breakfast, though having limited menu choices, was especially enjoyable since it involved an actual dining setting in a nice adjoining restuarant. Parking was a bit pricey, but the in and out privileges enabled us to come and go as necessary. We would definitely stay at the Handlery again.

Helpfull Staff

The room was really small, and, more bothersome, was the odor: a strong odor of wet wood, that could also be smelled in the hallways. Overall, the hotel feel is that it is an older, not modernized, operation. The suite was on the 5th floor, it smelled really good (some deodorant/perfume smell), and the hallway did not smell as bad as on the 8th floor. We really enjoyed it. We experienced the Hotel Restaurant, THe Daily Grill, because it was really raining on our first evening in SF (Nov 1st) and we could not get out with the baby. It's pricey but food is fine. Another problem was the internet WiFi connection in the room. THe instruction was for the Wayport. Thus, I paid for 2 days. But it did not work. The front desk told me that I should use another WiFi network (I forgot the name). It happens that Wayport is their old WiFi and they just got a new one, but they forgot to remove the old instructions in the rooms. Thus I had to register again, but the hotel refunded me the Wayport fee. In addition, the WiFi Signal is weak in the room, thus you have to ask for a bridge a the front desk. The one they gave me did not work.
