Intimate boutique hotel with outdoor pool just steps from Union Square

This Union Square mainstay, dating back to 1908, mixes old and new under one roof. Older rooms bring with them a hearty dose of history; newer accommodations, completed in the last 15 years, are more spacious and have upgraded amenities. There's an outdoor pool -- a rarity for downtown San Francisco -- a heated sauna and an on-site barbershop. One of the city's most popular taverns, The Daily Grill, is located on the ground floor.

Highlights
  • Serene outdoor pool with heated sauna
  • Stroll to some of the best shopping in town
  • Stellar on-site restaurant, The Daily Grill, serves up American classics.
  • On-site barbershop
  • Discount coupons to nearby Macy's
Rooms

The Handlery has 377 rooms in all -- 284 in the "historic" section of the hotel, and 93 in a newer and recently renovated part. Newer rooms, dubbed "Premier," measure 450 square feet and look out on the outdoor pool deck. They also include bathrobes and electric shoe polishers. The older rooms, dubbed "Historic," are part of the original 1908 construction and include mini-refrigerators, in-room safes and ironing boards. Some of the latter rooms offer views of the San Francisco skyline; Wi-Fi is available in all (fees apply).

Features

The hotel has been family owned and operated since the 1920s.

Service has been a strongpoint for all of those years; today the property employs multi-lingual concierges who arrange everything from dinner reservations to babysitter services. Other exceptional services include same-day laundry and dry-cleaning, as well as the on-site barber shop.

All guests have access to a Club One fitness center one block from the hotel (fees apply).

Grab a burger and a beer at The Daily Grill, a swanky but reliable bar on the ground floor. The weekend brunch here is rated among the best in the city (try the Bloody Mary and understand why).

Great Location

I felt that it was a very nice hotel, however the room was so small. The room was clean with the exception of the night stand which didn't seem to be dusted for weeks. The location was very good for shopping and close to all transportation. The staff was very courteous and helpful.

Great Location!

The Handlery is in an extremely accessible location if you are into shopping in downtown San Francisco. It is located a half block away from Union Square and the world famous cable cars. You can get anywhere in town by bus (Muni), trolleys, and the subway and all of these are in walking distance from the hotel. The hotel is an older one, but very atmospheric. We found the rooms to be spacious and comfortable. Restaurants of every kind are close by and delicious.

Great Service

We were unfortunate to not have our luggage upon arrival at the airport. The staff at Handlery Union Square were extremely aware of our situation and were very prompt in getting us our luggage as soon as it arrived. The location was perfect, very close to all the places we wanted to visit.

Great, we had a view of union square.

For the time of year, we paid a great price. The only thing is the parking, We felt $47.00 was a bit high.

Well trained staff, nice accommodations, great food!

I had been wanting to try the Handlery for several years now. It was far beyond my expectations which were somewhat high to begin with. When I return to San Francisco on my next visit (and I go often), my stay will be at the Handlery! Clean, well maintained accommodations, well-trained friendly staff, many amenities like higher priced hotels provide, comfortable beds, and the on-premises grill was very good. Best buy in Union Square and downtown San Fran is on your doorstep. Great location! Great hotel!

Best Buy In S.F.

The Handlery is a family run hotel and it shows. The staff is Awesome. They were very accommodating, The bell desk, conceierge, and front desk all went out of their way to help with my visit. The hotel is located in the heart of S.F. Easy walk to Powell & Hyde turnaround cable car station, Union square, and easy access to many shopping and dinning options. The best deals are to be had on the weekdays at Handlery. The front desk saw that we were traveling without children and asked us if we wanted a more quieter part of the hotel. WOW. Just the vacation we needed. Thanks Handlery , We'll be back!

excellent location

The hotel was centrally located. Near all shopping and a half block from the cable cars. Room service was good and the food hot and quick. The room was clean and maintqained well. Bathroom was exceptionally clean. The only problem was the logistics of parking and walking to the hotel area. Of course, in San Francisco, parking is not inexpensive, but I was not impressed with the $42 dollars a day. And to add 14% tax was ridiculous. But all in all, I would stay there again. Lefty Odoul's next door was great. Good food and the piano bar was entertaining.

The cable cars are a block away. $11 dollars get you an all day pass , so dont fall for the $5 one way. You can buy tickets at the kiosk or from the conductor on the car. Dont go to the turnarounds to catch the cars. Try mid street. You will find stops near most intersections.

Super location in San Fran

My friend and I really enjoyed our stay at the Handlery Union Square. An older building that has a lot of charm. Friendly staff that helped us find a place to have a wonderful Italian dinner at very short notice (Fino was the name of the restaurant within walking distance). We spend most of our time out of the room exploring San Fran, but when we returned the bed was very comfortable and clean. The best aspect of this hotel is the location - if you are a walker you can go anywhere in the city and if not, the cable cars are right there! We personally had a bad experience at the restaurant attached to the hotel so I would not recommend eating there.
