Intimate boutique hotel with outdoor pool just steps from Union Square
This Union Square mainstay, dating back to 1908, mixes old and new under one roof. Older rooms bring with them a hearty dose of history; newer accommodations, completed in the last 15 years, are more spacious and have upgraded amenities. There's an outdoor pool -- a rarity for downtown San Francisco -- a heated sauna and an on-site barbershop. One of the city's most popular taverns, The Daily Grill, is located on the ground floor.

unbeatable location
We always stay there when I am in SF visiting my daughter. Everyone is very nice and the hotel is right in the heart of Union Square - 1/2 block from the cable car and in the center of upscale shopping. It is very easy to walk everywhere and there is good public transportation. The only sour note is the reception desk at the Daily Grill, which is their associated restaurant - they tend to get hopelessly confused and rude. However, the food is great and the servers are uniformly nice - it is primarily a steakhouse, but there are many great choices for vegetarians and the vegetable are always prepared superbly. We stay there 3 or 4 times a year for the past 4 years, so obviously I like the place and it is much more economical than the other upscale hotels in that area.

Give yourself plenty of time and patience when dealing with the restauran reception desk - I would advise against eating there if you are in a hurry.

Handlery Union Square opinion
Staff was friendly, room was very clean and newly redone. We had 2 double beds, they were really comfy with down comforters and pillows that actually stayed fairly plump when you put your head on them. The room had a small fridge, large screen tv, thermostat to adjust the heat, really all we needed. The bathroom was nothing special, but clean, great hot water in the shower. We were not on the Geary street side, but faced the inner back so did not have SF street noise all night. Last year we stayed at the Hilton - I don't believe that room was much bigger and the Handlery has much more character.

Short walk from the Bart, Market Street and the Westfield mall and right by Macys. Eat at John's Grill on Ellis St for great steak and lamb. Not cheap, but tasty.

Great location in Union Sq.
Great location in Union Sq part of the city. Friendly staff, told us the best way to use public transportion. Very nice room with king bed. Clean and comfortable. Found it easy to get anywhere in the city from the hotel.

nice room
The rooms were very clean, with nice comfortable beds. We will make sure to visit again.It should be known that parking for the hotel is not included and its a little pricy.

Christmas in SF
Girlfriends trip for a play, Shrek the musical, GREAT!!!, and some shopping. This is a perfect location, and a wonderful staff.

A nice hotel in a good location.
This was a family Thanksgiving vacation. We had a good time. The hotel was nice and the location was great. The hotel staff was nice and helpful. The room we were given was small. We were able to get an upgrade at a discount. I will recommend the hotel to aa friend.

Well...
We were in town for a wedding. If you want to be in the heart of Union Square this hotel serves that purpose. The room was small and pretty average. The hotel personnel were very nice. The garage situation was very inconvenient as you had to drive around the corner, which was tolerable, however, we had to take two separate elevators and a long walk with our luggage to get to our room. Considering it is S.F., the price is fair for the location.

Quick check-in. I got the room I paid for. The bathroom appeared to have been recently renovated and was like new. The business center charges to use their computers. Great location if you're a tourist.
