Intimate boutique hotel with outdoor pool just steps from Union Square
This Union Square mainstay, dating back to 1908, mixes old and new under one roof. Older rooms bring with them a hearty dose of history; newer accommodations, completed in the last 15 years, are more spacious and have upgraded amenities. There's an outdoor pool -- a rarity for downtown San Francisco -- a heated sauna and an on-site barbershop. One of the city's most popular taverns, The Daily Grill, is located on the ground floor.

Very pleased!
First time staying at this hotel and second time visiting San Fran. Staff was very friendly and accomodating. The only thing that wasnt perfect was the bed. It was stiff and provided moderate discomfort upon awakening, but that was overshadowed by this great city, great location within the city, and the great food.

B2B weekend!
Bay to Breakers weekend! Great location for walking to the race and to accessing public transportation. Loved the fact that the room included a refrigerator for use (not to sell over-priced items).

Great location and fabulous service
This hotel is wonderful. It is centrally located and close to all different kinds of transportation. The staff was very helpful and courteous and made our stay beyond comfortable. The room was very nice, the king size bed was comfortable and I was impressed at how nice the decor and view was for the price. I liked that there were a lot of outlet plugs available since I was travelling on business and had to work on my laptop while charging two phones. There was also an ipod docking station which was nice. All in all it was a great experience and I will definitely stay there in the future.

Great hotel
Great hotel. Staff was extremely helpful and courteous. Very clean room. No complaints except the percussion player out on the street playing way to late.

friendly staff and convenient location
very convenient location as it's at the heart of Union Square, walking distance to all shops and restaurants. The hotel staffs were extremely attentive and I was pleasantly surprised by an offer to upgrade my room.

Great staff
5 minutes after checking in, we complained about the size of the "queen" bed. John, the night manager, hooked us up with a beautiful suite with a king sized bed. It was such a lovely evening thanks to John :)

Take the BART from the airport to the hotel. It's a short walk and only about $8, instead of a ridiculous cab fare.

Perfect location
The service was excellent. I loved the fact that the hotel was close to everything...restaurants, theater, car rental, shopping! I had room service for all three breakfasts and they were delicious and the servers were very courteous. My room was clean and comfortable. It was located in the back, so it was quiet. I love the doorman and the bell staff...so welcoming and nice. This is a hotel I will return to....and soon.

This is our third year into the city for Christmas shopping and fun and by far the best. The location and ease of parking is the big draw. And the fact that the staff is very helpful and friendly. You are 1/2 block off Union Square which really helps with the noise level. Anything on Union Square can be really loud. We will definitely be back next year! It's an older hotel but it has been remodeled. Our room was great!

Third time I've stayed here and it has been excellent every time. Couldn't ask for a better location. Breakfast not included in the room price (at least, not on the occasions I've booked) but a great selection available at fairly reasonable prices in the adjacent Daily Grill. (You could wander and find other options nearby, too, no doubt.) If you're a customer, the Daily Grill offers free wireless internet too.

The last time we stayed at the
The last time we stayed at the Handlery was for our honeymoon in 1992. For that stay we were upgraded to a suite and had a great time! This time around we had our two kids [11 and 6] with us and stayed in a room with two double beds - it was perfect for our needs. Convenient to public transport, close to shops, food outlets etc. The staff were fantastically helpful when we pulled up out the front in our hire car at 3pm on a Tuesday afternoon and unloaded all our stuff. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable, would have no hesitation in staying there next time in SF. The lift is a little dodgy - but hey we could all do with a bit more taking the stairs!!! Love this place.
