Intimate boutique hotel with outdoor pool just steps from Union Square

This Union Square mainstay, dating back to 1908, mixes old and new under one roof. Older rooms bring with them a hearty dose of history; newer accommodations, completed in the last 15 years, are more spacious and have upgraded amenities. There's an outdoor pool -- a rarity for downtown San Francisco -- a heated sauna and an on-site barbershop. One of the city's most popular taverns, The Daily Grill, is located on the ground floor.

Highlights
  • Serene outdoor pool with heated sauna
  • Stroll to some of the best shopping in town
  • Stellar on-site restaurant, The Daily Grill, serves up American classics.
  • On-site barbershop
  • Discount coupons to nearby Macy's
Rooms

The Handlery has 377 rooms in all -- 284 in the "historic" section of the hotel, and 93 in a newer and recently renovated part. Newer rooms, dubbed "Premier," measure 450 square feet and look out on the outdoor pool deck. They also include bathrobes and electric shoe polishers. The older rooms, dubbed "Historic," are part of the original 1908 construction and include mini-refrigerators, in-room safes and ironing boards. Some of the latter rooms offer views of the San Francisco skyline; Wi-Fi is available in all (fees apply).

Features

The hotel has been family owned and operated since the 1920s.

Service has been a strongpoint for all of those years; today the property employs multi-lingual concierges who arrange everything from dinner reservations to babysitter services. Other exceptional services include same-day laundry and dry-cleaning, as well as the on-site barber shop.

All guests have access to a Club One fitness center one block from the hotel (fees apply).

Grab a burger and a beer at The Daily Grill, a swanky but reliable bar on the ground floor. The weekend brunch here is rated among the best in the city (try the Bloody Mary and understand why).

Annual Mother/Daughter Christmas Shopping Trip

This is our third year into the city for Christmas shopping and fun and by far the best. The location and ease of parking is the big draw. And the fact that the staff is very helpful and friendly. You are 1/2 block off Union Square which really helps with the noise level. Anything on Union Square can be really loud. We will definitely be back next year! It's an older hotel but it has been remodeled. Our room was great!

San Francisco 2009

San Francisco is a "been there done that type" of city. We enjoyed our visit. The food was expensive (expected that), but the quality was not what I expected. Lots of Asian food to be found. Dim Sum is an experience. The staff at the Handerly was awesome. We upgraded to the club rooms which was a good idea. TAKE A ROOM ON THE POOL/COURTYARD SIDE. The city side was way too noisy late at night and early morning. They were even willing to change our rooms, but i did not do it. if there on a weekend, go to the ferry building to sample all of the fruits and veggies from the surrounding farms. Biking the golden gate bridge is a must!!! Just a few places that you will have to walk your bike up. Overall an memorable experience.Only if you have a car, go the Cliff House area to see the beach. sunset over the Pacific was an experience for this east coast girl.(the bus fare and time spent on bus is not really worth it.)

The vacation was terrific. You must take the tours to see everything. The staff was great. Take warmer clothing, it's not that warm in SF in June.

Just Okay

I was so very excited to get a Hotel & Airfare package but when I opened my door to the room it was so small that you felt enclosed. The bathroom could only fit on person in at a time. The front desk people were great and treat us very well but the room was not what we expected. The location to go down to Fishermans Wharf was great the Cable car went straight there and the Bart was just down the block.

nice hotel

We enjoyed our stay very much. The hotel was older but very well kept and clean. Our room overlooked O'farrel street which for some may be noisy but didn't bother us. The only bad experience we had was with two of the concierge. One the first day we asked for help setting up a tour of the city and he was pretty uninformative, sort of like "well here they are good luck". so not so helpful. The other involved renting a car for the day to drive to monterey. He( a different guy) recommended a rental car co. that was right around the corner, there again some more of that "your on your own attitude". We walked to the rental car co about a block and a half away, not bad, but after paying for the car had to walk another two blocks to a garage to pick up the car , which now put two women in a questionable neighborhood. Pretty scary for us for a bit. Got back late that night too scared to take car back to garage late at night, had to park in hotel garage over night at an added expense of 38$. The hotel accomodations and the personel at the front desk and in the hotel garage were very nice and very helpful, concierges not so much.
