Intimate boutique hotel with outdoor pool just steps from Union Square

This Union Square mainstay, dating back to 1908, mixes old and new under one roof. Older rooms bring with them a hearty dose of history; newer accommodations, completed in the last 15 years, are more spacious and have upgraded amenities. There's an outdoor pool -- a rarity for downtown San Francisco -- a heated sauna and an on-site barbershop. One of the city's most popular taverns, The Daily Grill, is located on the ground floor.

Highlights
  • Serene outdoor pool with heated sauna
  • Stroll to some of the best shopping in town
  • Stellar on-site restaurant, The Daily Grill, serves up American classics.
  • On-site barbershop
  • Discount coupons to nearby Macy's
Rooms

The Handlery has 377 rooms in all -- 284 in the "historic" section of the hotel, and 93 in a newer and recently renovated part. Newer rooms, dubbed "Premier," measure 450 square feet and look out on the outdoor pool deck. They also include bathrobes and electric shoe polishers. The older rooms, dubbed "Historic," are part of the original 1908 construction and include mini-refrigerators, in-room safes and ironing boards. Some of the latter rooms offer views of the San Francisco skyline; Wi-Fi is available in all (fees apply).

Features

The hotel has been family owned and operated since the 1920s.

Service has been a strongpoint for all of those years; today the property employs multi-lingual concierges who arrange everything from dinner reservations to babysitter services. Other exceptional services include same-day laundry and dry-cleaning, as well as the on-site barber shop.

All guests have access to a Club One fitness center one block from the hotel (fees apply).

Grab a burger and a beer at The Daily Grill, a swanky but reliable bar on the ground floor. The weekend brunch here is rated among the best in the city (try the Bloody Mary and understand why).

Family friendly

My son and I stayed for 4 days and night and were very pleased with the location of the hotel, the amenities offered, and the friendly atmosphere as a whole. We were next to a cable car line and within a block to major bus routes that took us anywhere we wanted to go in town. There was an IMAX within easy walking distance for that rainy evening we spent indoors. Would easily recommend to other families wanting an 'in-town' experience.

Great, we had a view of union square.

For the time of year, we paid a great price. The only thing is the parking, We felt $47.00 was a bit high.

Great location

The Handlery Union Square is one of mine and my wifes favorite hotels in San Francisco. It is located near Union Square where all the action is. Great people watching, catch a cable car, find a great restuarant. Shopping is nearby too.

Great location!

Hotel staff was wonderful! We arrived at 10am hoping to leave our bags with the front desk staff until check-in at 3pm, but were told we could check in at that time! Room was clean, but a little small; regardless, it was perfect for what we needed - a place to sleep and shower. Our only complaint is that the hallways are carpeted and seem to have absorbed some odors over time... just a little musty; almost as if someone had a dog there. The room itself did not have an odor though!

My review of Handlery Union Square

This hotel has two sections. We stayed in the premier, upgrade area, I would hate to see the standard. We had no dresser or chest to store clothing, and for the upgrade charge, the room was very small. The location is very desirable, with a close proimity to the cable car, street car line, metro, and BART. Greet shopping and dining is close.

Great location

The Handlery Union Square hotel is very conveniently located in downtown San Francisco. I have stayed at the hotel numerous times and it is a favorite, but this was the first time in the ?older section? of the property. I was pleased at the size of the rooms and the d?cor, but views were nonexistent. Throughout the hotel, staff were attentive and friendly. I checked in at 4pm (check-in was listed at 3pm) and the room wasn't ready. I had a 30 minute wait. I could have passed the time in the attractive lounge, but instead visited with friends in the lobby. If I had been tired, this would not have been fun. The hotel is close to shopping, dining and entertainment. The famous cable cars are steps away.

Time-saving tip: In Hotel

The parking garage entrance is around the corner. To get to the front desk you must walk down a flight of stairs and it can be troublesome to navigate with baggage. Even if you just have one bag, use the bellman service. Be prepared to pay a hefty price for parking, although it does come with in-and-out privileges.
