Intimate boutique hotel with outdoor pool just steps from Union Square

This Union Square mainstay, dating back to 1908, mixes old and new under one roof. Older rooms bring with them a hearty dose of history; newer accommodations, completed in the last 15 years, are more spacious and have upgraded amenities. There's an outdoor pool -- a rarity for downtown San Francisco -- a heated sauna and an on-site barbershop. One of the city's most popular taverns, The Daily Grill, is located on the ground floor.

Highlights
  • Serene outdoor pool with heated sauna
  • Stroll to some of the best shopping in town
  • Stellar on-site restaurant, The Daily Grill, serves up American classics.
  • On-site barbershop
  • Discount coupons to nearby Macy's
Rooms

The Handlery has 377 rooms in all -- 284 in the "historic" section of the hotel, and 93 in a newer and recently renovated part. Newer rooms, dubbed "Premier," measure 450 square feet and look out on the outdoor pool deck. They also include bathrobes and electric shoe polishers. The older rooms, dubbed "Historic," are part of the original 1908 construction and include mini-refrigerators, in-room safes and ironing boards. Some of the latter rooms offer views of the San Francisco skyline; Wi-Fi is available in all (fees apply).

Features

The hotel has been family owned and operated since the 1920s.

Service has been a strongpoint for all of those years; today the property employs multi-lingual concierges who arrange everything from dinner reservations to babysitter services. Other exceptional services include same-day laundry and dry-cleaning, as well as the on-site barber shop.

All guests have access to a Club One fitness center one block from the hotel (fees apply).

Grab a burger and a beer at The Daily Grill, a swanky but reliable bar on the ground floor. The weekend brunch here is rated among the best in the city (try the Bloody Mary and understand why).

Unbeatable Hotel for price and location

This was our first trip to San Francisco and the hotel was in the perfect location. It was located in the center of everything. It was easy walking distance to many attractions, and it was near the cable car stop which provided transportation to all locations. The hotel staff was excellent. They could not have been more helpful. From the moment we checked in at the front desk, to the outstandingly friendly bellman, to the concierge who offered outstanding information and directions. The housekeeping staff was excellent. All in all it was one of my best hotel stays and i will most definitely stay in this hotel when i visit the city again

Not all that bad :D

The location was great and the staff was a great help with traveling on the public transportation. I have to say that even on Union Square the noise wasn't that bad. Yeah you have the normal city noise, but what else would one expect traveling to a big city. If you want super amounts of peace and quiet then this hotel is not for you. BUT this hotel is amazingly clean and friendly. Luckily I had a window in my room because the room had no temperature control. High Points: -Great location= Easy access to all transportation with just a short walk too. -Staff is very helpful and friendly -Rooms and Beds are really great= soft bed, mini fridge, and enough room for single travelers

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

There are plenty of NICE restaurants (depending on the amount of money you are willing to spend) around the city and most are in walking distance. Try to map out places you want to go and which route to take if you want to use the Muni (the public transportation). Plan early-save time and money.

Great Location

The hotel was great. Concierge was helpful. The rooms were clean and comfy, just a bit on the small side. The location was great. Easy access to all the city has to offer. Also easy access to public transport. Ditch the car, because its just a nuisance and costs way too much to park. Its not the hotels fault, just the going rate for parking in the city. Great deal. Stay here if you plan to see the city and want a great location. Pick somewhere else if you plan on staying in the hotel room all the time. The room was fine, but Im sure there are larger more comfy rooms out there if thats your goal. Of course they will also be more expensive. Good luck and have fun in SF.

A pleasant stay

Overall good experience and well suited to the business traveler. The room had all the necessary features with the exception of good pillows to sleep on. Would have no complaint other than the fact that housekeeping were knocking on my door at 8:30am in the morning! Would stay again due to its easy access to the city & proximity to shops & restaurants.

what a great location & great staff

We were overwhelmed with attention from staff at this hotel when we arrived. We looked at the same rating for this hotel compared to new york and this hotel was streets ahead in quality. And good value! Located one block from union square, perhaps a 2 min walk to the famous trolley cars and great shopping district Macy's Levi's, to name a few. And an easy walk or trolley ride to other shopping locations. A very central location! And you could walk from The BART [train system] which we caught from the airport to the hotel [And incidentally BART was very tourist friendly.] It was so easy to organize everything and just get picked up at the hotel. The room was lovely and comfortable. And dining on site - what more could you want? The thing that impressed my wife and I the most was the attention to detail. Great job Handlery team

Union Square weekend

Great location within a half block of O'Farrell st car rentals allowed us to drop the wives off while we returned the car. The newer section is already a little dated but the rooms were large for san fran and the little balcony was ok. No views. Pool was small but it worked. Staff was attentive and helpful. Connected bar was pricey but convenient. Would stay again but it is a step down from the Nikko or the Palace- our last two san fran stays

Spacious and comfortable for a great price

Stayed with Handlery Union Square for 2 nights in a King room. I was lucky enough to stay in a room with a balcony that overlooked their pool, which gave it a premium feel to my stay. The hotel is actually two buildings, which can be a bit confusing at first, but once you locate all the exits onto the nearby streets, it's not so bad. The room is very spacious and comfortable, the staff are very polite and professional but the concierge desk can get a bit overloaded during peak times. Hotel is near major shopping areas and amenities (post office, cell provider outlets, etc.) and also near Union Square park.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

The hotel is very close to cable car stops, which makes it a handy way to get to Fisherman's Wharf for sightseeing and the sheer experience of riding a San Francisco cable car. Per ride fares are $6 USD but you can get passports for day passes and monthly passes too. Once you're at Fisherman's Wharf, though, avoid waiting in line for the return trip because the wait is usually more than 45mins. Take a walk for a couple of blocks and catch a ride on a passing cable car from there, saving yourself some daylight hours.
