Intimate boutique hotel with outdoor pool just steps from Union Square

This Union Square mainstay, dating back to 1908, mixes old and new under one roof. Older rooms bring with them a hearty dose of history; newer accommodations, completed in the last 15 years, are more spacious and have upgraded amenities. There's an outdoor pool -- a rarity for downtown San Francisco -- a heated sauna and an on-site barbershop. One of the city's most popular taverns, The Daily Grill, is located on the ground floor.

Highlights
  • Serene outdoor pool with heated sauna
  • Stroll to some of the best shopping in town
  • Stellar on-site restaurant, The Daily Grill, serves up American classics.
  • On-site barbershop
  • Discount coupons to nearby Macy's
Rooms

The Handlery has 377 rooms in all -- 284 in the "historic" section of the hotel, and 93 in a newer and recently renovated part. Newer rooms, dubbed "Premier," measure 450 square feet and look out on the outdoor pool deck. They also include bathrobes and electric shoe polishers. The older rooms, dubbed "Historic," are part of the original 1908 construction and include mini-refrigerators, in-room safes and ironing boards. Some of the latter rooms offer views of the San Francisco skyline; Wi-Fi is available in all (fees apply).

Features

The hotel has been family owned and operated since the 1920s.

Service has been a strongpoint for all of those years; today the property employs multi-lingual concierges who arrange everything from dinner reservations to babysitter services. Other exceptional services include same-day laundry and dry-cleaning, as well as the on-site barber shop.

All guests have access to a Club One fitness center one block from the hotel (fees apply).

Grab a burger and a beer at The Daily Grill, a swanky but reliable bar on the ground floor. The weekend brunch here is rated among the best in the city (try the Bloody Mary and understand why).

Wonderful Hotel just off of the Square!

Our experience at the hotel was wonderful. We were able to have a quiet room (which is a plus being near a busy road like Market St.). The staff were very helpfull and the location was great! You are near the union square, which allows you to catch the bus, or trolley car anywhere in the city. Can't wait to go back to SF! As the song says we 'left our heart in SF'!

Convenient location in union sq

We were close to the shopping and dining areas. We came across a broken coffee maker with a piece of hair in it, TV was old fashion, didn't like the shower and the curtain. The water leaked out to the floor. Bed was comforting. Wished the elevator to the parking garage on one end connects to the other end. We had to get on the garage side of the elevator, then walked down one floor to get to the other side of the hotel's elevator, and then to our room. The staffs were friendly and the lobby was nice.

Unbeatable location for the price

I really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is directly across from the St Francis! Great access to cable cars and union station caddy corner to the hotel. Parking is very pricy in Frisco... 44 per night to have it valet... to rich for my blood. But, we found a friendly parking lot not one block away for half the price. Like I said the location of this hotel is priceless. Definitely would stay here again. The concierge was friendly. He booked our tours and helped us find our way around town by giving us bus routes, trolly routes and cable car routes. Also there are many restaurants in the immediate area... not to mention the shopping area. The biggest Nordstroms, the original Macy's!!! Chinatown a few blocks from the hotel. I loved the location of this hotel. One other thing I liked about it was the quality of the rooms: beds to die for... So very comfortable, after a long day, it was the perfect way to end the evening. I highly recommend the Handlery.

Clean and great location

The rooms where very clean, but there was a fee for everything and most where double what local hotels are charging for the same services. I recommend looking at all of the costs before staying here, you could find a much cheaper hotel for the same services.

Unbeatable Hotel for price and location

This was our first trip to San Francisco and the hotel was in the perfect location. It was located in the center of everything. It was easy walking distance to many attractions, and it was near the cable car stop which provided transportation to all locations. The hotel staff was excellent. They could not have been more helpful. From the moment we checked in at the front desk, to the outstandingly friendly bellman, to the concierge who offered outstanding information and directions. The housekeeping staff was excellent. All in all it was one of my best hotel stays and i will most definitely stay in this hotel when i visit the city again

in the Heart Of San Fran

I was late getting into San Fransisco. The Staff of The Handerly was effecient and professional. I had plenty of extra turn around time to go explore San Fransisco. The staff also helped me learn the mini system which is just down the street @ Market and Powell. Cable cars run near the Hotel. And There are street performers at night. But There is also The Gold Dust and Lefty Odouls for live music right next door.

Get a mini card/pass. They are good for most if not all public transit, buses, cable cars, trolleys, in the city. And remember mini is not BART.

Reasonably priced for awesome location!

Super friendly staff, awesome location (right by Union Square and all public transport), clean room with all the necessary amenities. Staff was totally accommodating -- we ordered breakfast for the next morning to be sent to our room after the cut-off time of 2:00 AM, but they took our order and brought us our breakfast right at the time we requested. Can get noisy late at night, but it's by Union Square near all the bars/clubs, so that's expected.

We like the Handlery

The hotel is very central so it was easy to get anywhere in the city on mass transit. The cable car is a half a block away and with a city pass or transit pass you can hop on and off it to get to Chinatown or to other transit.

Buy a City Pass or a transit pass. It is great to be able to hop on and off of buses, streetcars and cable cars when you realize that you can't walk up or down another hill.
