Intimate boutique hotel with outdoor pool just steps from Union Square

This Union Square mainstay, dating back to 1908, mixes old and new under one roof. Older rooms bring with them a hearty dose of history; newer accommodations, completed in the last 15 years, are more spacious and have upgraded amenities. There's an outdoor pool -- a rarity for downtown San Francisco -- a heated sauna and an on-site barbershop. One of the city's most popular taverns, The Daily Grill, is located on the ground floor.

Highlights
  • Serene outdoor pool with heated sauna
  • Stroll to some of the best shopping in town
  • Stellar on-site restaurant, The Daily Grill, serves up American classics.
  • On-site barbershop
  • Discount coupons to nearby Macy's
Rooms

The Handlery has 377 rooms in all -- 284 in the "historic" section of the hotel, and 93 in a newer and recently renovated part. Newer rooms, dubbed "Premier," measure 450 square feet and look out on the outdoor pool deck. They also include bathrobes and electric shoe polishers. The older rooms, dubbed "Historic," are part of the original 1908 construction and include mini-refrigerators, in-room safes and ironing boards. Some of the latter rooms offer views of the San Francisco skyline; Wi-Fi is available in all (fees apply).

Features

The hotel has been family owned and operated since the 1920s.

Service has been a strongpoint for all of those years; today the property employs multi-lingual concierges who arrange everything from dinner reservations to babysitter services. Other exceptional services include same-day laundry and dry-cleaning, as well as the on-site barber shop.

All guests have access to a Club One fitness center one block from the hotel (fees apply).

Grab a burger and a beer at The Daily Grill, a swanky but reliable bar on the ground floor. The weekend brunch here is rated among the best in the city (try the Bloody Mary and understand why).

great location

The hotel was in a great location. Beds were very comfortable but the room was much smaller than expected. The photos online show a room with table and chairs that bore no resemblance to the one we had. We had one small chair in between the 2 beds which was in an awkward place. The bathroom is tiny, no bath tub, just a shower. The sink is outside the bathroom in the actual room. There was hardly any space to put out your toiletries. It is an older hotel and some of the furniture looked a little old. That said it was in a great location. We walked from the BART station which we took from the airport for a bargain $5.35 each. Also the staff were lovely. Arrived 5 hours before check in and we got our room straight away. Will definitely stay here again.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

If you are on a budget the Westfield Shopping Center at the bottom of Powell St had several food halls that had a great variety. There is a Thai restaurant there that had a line every night because the food was great. Ate there 3 times in 4 nights. Something in the food hall for everyone. Also a Bristol Farms in there that we got our fruit from daily.

Very helpful, courteous staff. Fabulous location. An older hotel, so the room was a bit noisy, although very clean and updated.

Great Location.

Hotel was in a great location. Easy to get to attractions, dining and public transportation. The room was very nice and clean. Houskeeping was very good. The only negative was the brick wall that our window faced. But then it allowed for the window to be open during the night for fresh air and no one looking in your room. :)

WiFi didn't work.

Excellent location, elegant appointments. Very small but clean and comfortable room. However, for price and target demographic was surprised that internet connection was not free, and even when paid for did not work in our room, but required a bulky attachment and only worked in the lobby. Hotel has own parking, but is additional cost and valet-only.

in the Heart Of San Fran

I was late getting into San Fransisco. The Staff of The Handerly was effecient and professional. I had plenty of extra turn around time to go explore San Fransisco. The staff also helped me learn the mini system which is just down the street @ Market and Powell. Cable cars run near the Hotel. And There are street performers at night. But There is also The Gold Dust and Lefty Odouls for live music right next door.

Get a mini card/pass. They are good for most if not all public transit, buses, cable cars, trolleys, in the city. And remember mini is not BART.

great for honeymooners!

We loved this hotel. The only real downsides were: internet was an extra $10 something a day, and the Daily Grill restaurant was terribly expensive and didn't offer any vegan options. The room was amazing, just the right amount of space for us to spread out all of our stuff plus souveniers. We would recommend this hotel to most, but not to any vegans.

Fantastic Location

Nicely maintained hotel, excellent location as far as Union Square, trolleys, shopping, etc. Check-in a bit confusing as we did not know where the parking garage entrance was in relation to the front door of the hotel. Room, decor, beds & linens were great. We asked for a quiet room and received a room on the 6th floor overlooking the pool. There was a very nice small refrigerator tucked away in a cabinet and complimentary bottled water. We had a small balcony with a table and two chairs which we enjoyed immensely (the weather was warm for SF). Surprising and nice touches were the shaving mirror and bathroom scale in the bathroom, plus a separate area with a large counter, chair and lighted makeup mirror. Also the overall lighting and number of outlets available were fantastic. We had a good nights sleep, but things got somewhat noisy in the morning with frequent "banging" heard - might have been the elevator although it was several doors down from our room. Also, it was not clear that the elevators in the lobby do not go to the entire 6th floor or the garage. We spent two occasions riding the wrong elevator before we realized that we had to walk to another section of the hotel to get to our room and the parking garage. All-in-all we would return to this hotel.

Nice option

The Handlery Union Square was a very good option for this area in San Francisco, where hotels tend to be quite a bit more expensive for few more advantages. The staff were excellent, the attached restaurant, The Daily Grill, served very good pub and American-style food. I have to say, though, that the room felt a little threadbare and dated. It could have used more electrical outlets conveniently located for charging my laptop and cell phone. I also hate having to pay an extra fee for wireless access and only having that access for a handful of hours. There is no excuse not to have free wireless at hotels anymore. It's not difficult or expensive to do. All in all, it was a pretty good experience, but the Handlery is probably better suited to leisure travelers than business travelers.

Very well located, nice and clean room

The hotel is very well located, in the core of Union Square. The backside of this location is the large amount of homeless people asking for money on the road. For the rest the hotel is in a very good position for visiting san francisco and for conferences at Moscone center. The room was big and clean, we didn't have any problem with the hotel and the staff. Recommended!
