Built in 1912, this small, centrally located moderate class hotel has 25 stylishly, comfortably furnished rooms. The hotel is customized to travelers on a budget, seeking cleanliness and comfort in an ideal San Francisco location. Small is right!

The Halcyon is a small, older hotel that is in a good location if you don't mind some noise on the street at night. The room was extremely small and not appointed as was suggested by the pictures posted. So small in fact, we barely had room to get around the bed. There is no elevator, so be prepared to cart your luggage up flights of narrow stairs. The person above us was an early riser and would clomp around his room in what sounded like heavy boots at 6AM. A last minute room change by the hotel clerk probably moved us from a nicer room to the one we ended up with. We arrived at 7PM, so we had to let ourselves into the room. No key was left for us, so I had to call the hotel emergency # to have the key dropped off. Maid service did not come while we were there - 4 days, 3 nights. There is no iron or ironing board in the room, you have to go down to the basement to retrieve them. However, they say you get what you pay for, and for the price the hotel was decent.

My son (26) had a room with two twin beds. The rooms are extremely small, but it is a boutique style hotel and we didn't go to San Francisco to stay in our room. They don't clean the rooms daily, but again, we didn't care. We were there to see "Wicked" and a 49ers game. The location is great, and if you are familiar with the city, the "local types" won't bother you. BUT, my mom would NOT feel comfortable here. [...], the night manager was awesome. BUT... they do not keep regular hotel office hours and there is no lobby. The room was clean upon arrival, there's a frig, sink, microwave, and coffee maker w/coffee. It's a bit noisy and my son thought the beds were rock hard (I didn't like the pillows, but I rarely do). Would we stay here again? Probably not, because I like to try new things, and I think I could find another equally good deal that may be an upgrade. Was it a good deal for the price, was it clean, a good location, and did I feel safe? Definitely.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

If you are going to the 49ers game, take the 77x (express) on Van Ness and definitely stop at Tommy's Joynt for pregame food, party and drinks. We stumbled on this and it was packed with 49ers fans and it was right next to the bus stop!

good value, convenient location

pros: - good price - convenient location - clean rooms cons: - small room - noisy (we were put on the first floor near the stairs) - neighborhood is a bit scary at night - tv did not work
