Fairmont San Francisco
SF Visitor Nov 29, 2009
The Fairmont is a beautiful, historic hotel. I had read complaints about the caliber of the staff's service, but there were ... absolutely no issues during our stay. Terrific hotel and solid staff service made for a great stay. The only concern with the hotel is that the walls between rooms in the main building are thin (this is likely a factor of the hotel's age). That being said, we slept fine all 5 nights we were there.

Buy a MUNI pass and jump on and off trolley and busses. Lots of dining nearby, but who wants to walk uphill with a full stomach.

All activities will require hikes up the incredibly steep Nob Hill -- best to spend the $5 for the cable cars! -- and there are no other restaurants or shopping within a short walk. If you're not physically fit, you'll need a car. But the views are spectacular, and the Fairmont SF is truly a classy place!

Skip the lobby bar at the Fairmont and head across the street to the top of the Marc for drinks instead.

Our stay at the Fairmont in San Francisco was a completely excellent experience. The staff, wow! Courteous, knowledgeable, ... professional and absolutely friendly. Now, on the location, right and the junction of the California and Powell Cable car track. This made it easy to head out to any point of interest in any direction. Finally, let me add that the Fairmont has become our official family hotel for all future visits

Good reliable Fairmont!
farnick Oct 24, 2009
The venerable Fairmont is the class of SF. Views from the top of Nob Hill are spectacular, but it's not the most convenient ... place to walk about and find shopping or restaurants without hikes up incredibly steep hills. Use the cable cars (that's why they're there!) or drive. The hotel is gorgeous and well maintained. The breakfast buffet is excellent but pricey ($38 w/ tax), and the Tonga room should not be missed!

I was there for a short visit but recieved first class treatment from the staff. The rooms and the furniture is a little old ... and somewhat worn but it adds to the charm of the hotel. You really can't get a better view of the bay and the downtown area than this.

A beautiful hotel with not so attractive
Little j Aug 14, 2009
We were surpised upon arrival that the hotel was beautiful and we were upgraded to a tower room without even asking. We heard ... the Tonga restaurant was good so we checked that out. Service there was poor and the food was cold and not very good. We then awoke to a bill slid under the room door informing us that parking was $60 per night! There is no sign or anything posted to inform you of this outrageous charge outside (or inside) the hotel. The staff merely said "there was nothing they could do."

Thank You, Orbitz!
Karen Aug 5, 2009
We booked this hotel through Orbitz during a sale, and got a great rate on the room. We were celebrating our 25 anniversary, ... and when I mentioned that at check-in, the hotel staff upgraded our room because it was such a special occasion. We had a beautiful balcony suite with a spectacular view of the city, at a beautiful historic hotel for an Orbitz sale price. Best anniversary gift ever!

The hotel was perfectly located. Half way from Fisherman's Wharf and Market Square. What I liked about this hotel was that ... there was a UPS store in the hotel. We found a surfboard for our son and had it shipped to him. So do a bunch of shopping and have it shipped home instead of carrying it with you on the plane!!!

We loved the beautiful building, the service was very good and the location was great. The clerk at the desk even commented ... on the great rate we got through Orbitz! The trolley clanged outside our window but we found it charming and it stopped at midnight.

Bring a good city map. We wandered around for a long time trying to find a restaurant recommended by the desk clerk and ended up at a mediocre restaurant in Chinatown. A travesty in San Francisco, known for its excellent restaurants.

North Beach had the most amazing sidewalk cafes and pizzarias (at a reasonable price). The hotel staff recommended a great sushi place a few blocks away, but we found the Nob Hill Cafe they recommended pricey and underseasoned.
