Historic grandeur overlooking the Golden Gate City

This Nob Hill mainstay, dating back to 1907, blends contemporary and historic tastes. Decorative touches such as marble floors and Corinthian columns evoke turn-of-the-century grandeur, while modern conveniences such as high-speed Internet and a full-service fitness center and spa keep travelers grounded in the present. Three well-regarded restaurants offer options for every meal, and the city's oldest Tiki bar provides a break from the formality of the hotel.

Highlights
  • The hilltop location delivers panoramic and breathtaking views of San Francisco Bay
  • Hop on any one of the city's cable cars right out front
  • Union Square shopping is only a four-block walk from the hotel
Rooms

Accommodations -- 591 rooms, 62 of them suites -- span two buildings: the original, circa-1907 structure and a tower built in the 1960s. Rooms vary in size (325-425 square feet; up to 6,000 for suites), but all come with flat-screen televisions, Frette luxury linens, MP3 docking stations and Miller Harris toiletries. Many also offer stunning views of San Francisco Bay, while Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access are available in all (fees apply).

Features

The hotel has received numerous awards, including the AAA Four Diamond Award and ExxonMobil Four Star Award.

Marble floors and Corinthian columns trimmed in gold accentuate the ornate Main Lobby. This area, spruced up in 1999, transports guests back to 1907, when the hotel opened. It may also transport TV fans back to the 1980s: Aaron Spelling's "Hotel" series was shot here.

The United Nations Charter was drafted in the hotel, and even the concierge service is historic. Dating back to 1973, it's the first formal concierge desk in the U.S.

All guests have access (fees apply) to the on-site Club One at Nob Hill Health Club, a full-service facility with spa and fitness center.

Grab a Mai-Tai at the Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar, a kitschy-but-lovable Tiki lounge on the site of an old (circa-1920s) indoor pool. On weekend nights, a band on a floating stage serenades patrons with Polynesian tunes .

Very nice hotel, not the best location

We stayed in the tower to have the newer bathrooms with the separate shower. The bathroom toiletries were good quality, so they are worth trying! It was one of the most comfortable beds I have been in. We got a smoking room since it was much cheaper, and there was a strong smell when we got on the floor, but the room wasn't too bad. It would have been better if the windows opened and we could air it out, though. We did a LOT of walking up & down the hills, so if you are out of shape you will have to rely heavily on the cable cars to get around. The location was nice because it was centrally located, but it seemed a little far from everything. Overall a nice hotel and a very comfortable stay!

If you want to walk to & from Market St, go to Powell instead of Mason since it is a lot less steep! Also, the cable car/muni pass is well worth it. We paid $27 for a 7 day pass (even though we were only there for 4 full days), and it definitely paid for itself.

Very nice facilities, but problem with reservation

While the fairmont itself is a wonderful hotel, be warned that the room you purchase may not be the room you are given when you check in. I purchased an exterior view with two queen beds but was given an interior view with double beds. They eventually found an exterior view room (while acting like they were doing me a favor) but they never found a room with the beds that were on my reservation.

Nice Hotel, Well located, pleasant staff. Ran into the president of Turkey who was staying there. The week before President Obama was there. It's an older hotel with a nice charm with updated rooms. You won't be disappointed.

Wonderful hotel but.........

Beautiful hotel, I reserved 3 rooms via an internet site, 2 rooms w/2 queen size beds were amazing, however, one room w/king size bed was disappointing. Curtain was ripped, crown moldings were chipped/damaged, didn't seem as clean as the other 2 rooms. Ran out of kleenex with no back up in the room. There aren't any resturants close by, which forces you to eat at their expensive resturants.

What? no free internet service at this price?

This is a fantastic place to stay, except for no free internet service is offered and the food is quite pricey. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable-- made us feel at home and welcome always. The location and the beauty of this hotel cannot be beat and the prominent history of the Fairmont adds to the allure of a vacation in San Francisco. Love this place, and would give a perfect 5 stars if the food prices and offerings were better and they provided free internet service.

Very nice!

The hotel was great onthe whole and was in an ideal location to explore the whole of the city as it was right on the hill between the coast, Italian quarter, Chinatown and the main square. Room was really clean and looked after every day which was great as were all staff. However DO NOT GO TO THE TONGA ROOM FOR BUFFET that is offered for $10 but was truly dreadful as we're the cocktails on offer so beware of this!!

Clean, comfortable and nicely located.

At a discounted rate, this place was a no-brainer. Extremely comfortable beds, nice TV, well furnished. If a view's important to you, make sure you aren't booking an interior room overlooking the courtyard. Also note that the little free amenities you get with cheaper hotels like a refrigerator or coffee will cost you extra here.

Clean, comfortable and nicely located.

The bed was the most comfortable hotel bed we've slept in, and we were upgraded to a king for free when we checked in. The hotel itself is gorgeous. This was a no-brainer at half price, but if a view is important to you make sure you aren't booking an interior room overlooking the courtyard. The Fairmont is lacking in little "free" amenities you generally find at cheaper hotels; for instance prepare to be nickel-and-dimed if you want a fridge in your room, and to pay $3 for a good cup of coffee in the cafe downstairs because there is no complimentary hotel sludge. No surprise given the hotel's usual price point and clientele. Also prepare for exorbitant parking fees if you use their lot, they were getting $65 a night when we stayed. We parked instead at a nearby garage for $27/night. Being located at the intersection of the two major trolley lines is great in theory, though we found ourselves having to walk several blocks upstream just to catch one that wasn't full. SF's trolley system is painfully overcrowded right now (peak season?) and we watched a lot of dismayed tourists watch full trolley after full trolley pass them by. The only place they're harder to catch a space on is at the wharf, where you at least get an orderly queue instead of a bunch of rude tourists falling over each other for the 3 open spaces. For strong walkers, Chinatown and Union Square are easily in walking distance, which is great. Would stay there again in a heartbeat at the rate I paid.
