Disappointed with the Executive Hotel
An extremely convenient location, but the room was oddly shaped and the bathroom layout ... awkward. Staff denied any knowledge of our reservation upon check-in, even with a printed confirmation, and were very rude. A most unpleasant experience. The Hotel no longer offers the continental breakfast, although it is still advertised that they do. Would not go back to this hotel, but do like the general area for convenience/access/safety to cable cars, Chinatown, Japantown, Ferry Plaza, Union Sq. Rode the cable cars; had dinner in Chinatown; enjoyed the shops & Farmers Mkt at the Ferry Plaza; shopped in Union Sq. All are in close proximity to this hotel. Many great little breakfast places to choose from close by.

Buy a pass for the cable cars and trolleys rather than pay per-ride. Works out to a much better deal, and more convenient. There are several locations you can buy 1 and 3 day passes. The Farmers Market operated on Tues & Sat at the Ferry Plaza on the waterfront is fun. Had a great takeout BBQ chicken lunch from one of the vendors, ate on the waterfront with a spectacular view. The Palais des Beaux Art is a fun place for a picnic and a hidden gem.

The Smell Says it ALL!
Do you ever read the little signs that hotels post near the elevators on little tables? Ours said "No smoking, incense or candles in rooms...." I have never seen this warning before, have you? Here is the run down on this hotel that makes it a "must avoid" when visiting San Francisco. 1. The rooms have an overpowering smell that cannot be ignored. Is it mold? a dead animal? poor ventilation? Who cares. The management obviously knows about the problem but refuses to cure it (See signs on each floor by the elevator!!) 2. Compounding the problem are windows (we had one small window!) that cannot be opened because they hold air conditioner units that don't work. Wow! its a triple play of pain and suffering that makes you want to get on your computer ASAP to find another hotel even after flying cross country and needing to sleep.... 3. Uh oh. The " free" Wi-Fi is so spotty that you may not be able to find another place. You get what you pay for! Get out quick any way. 4. Opps!. There is only one SLOWWWW elevator for a place with 100+ rooms. Don't worry, the stairways are wide. 5. If you gut it out for the duration since the place is "such a bargain" you will find a computer in the lobby to print out boarding passes....AND the hotel has the gall to charge you for computer usage. I have never experienced this even in the low priced chain hotels. 6. This might be pickee, but who puts out only skin milk for the "free" coffee. How about some half and half containers as well. 7. The free wine tasting? If you are in the hotel between 5-6 pm then you are not enjoying the city by the bay. This timing is meant to keep away the guests! 8. While the staff was pleasant, I have to give them a low score for being apologists for a situation that is unacceptable in all ways. MY BEST ADVICE: Pay more to stay somewhere else in the Union Square area or bring your own smell removal product--Lysol!

Long walk from hotel
Take a ferry from the downtown Ferry Building (not fisherman's wharf) and buy lunch or breakfast before you board. The ride is one of the greatest in the world and cheap too (PS. the ferries have full food service on board too) We went to Sausalito and the boat goes right by Alcatraz on the return trip.

Motorcycle Trip
The front desk was very rude and unhelpful. We were given a room that was noisy after I had specified a quiet room and on the second try we got a room that was no better. Just not obviously noisy on first inspection. The location was good but that is the best thing I can say about it.

Ok
My experience at the hotel was OK. The staff was pretty good, always helpful and kind. The complimentary wine was really nice after a day of site-seeing. The hotel rooms were nothing to write home about. The lighting was bad and the bathrooms and rooms were really small. The shower head was positioned bad so water flowed onto the floor. The location of the hotel was pretty good as it was right in the middle of town so you can walk everywhere. It might be worth it to upgrade to the next level of hotel if you are looking for a plush room.

Sears Fine Food has the best breakfast I've experienced in a very long time. It's on Powell Street and a short walk from the hotel. I went back and back and back again. Yum!

Kinda dumpy but clean w/ great location
The hotel was okay. The lobby had been renovated but the rooms clearly had not. It was very old (very few outlets, discolored shower, etc.). The wine reception in the evening was nice the one night we managed to take advantage of it. The location of the hotel was great though--walk half a block and you can catch the Powell St. Cable Car. I might consider staying here again if the price was right just because the location was so good, even though the room itself was clean but dumpy. Also, there was NOT a continental breakfast as indicated in the description of the hotel.

Buy tickets to Alcatraz early so you can do the night tour. The day tour was cool, but the night would have been much, much better.

Loved the lobby and the wine in the evening. Very quaint and cozy. Staff was so helpful and took a lot of time with guests to find requested restaurants or tourist attractions. Definitely would stay here again.

Great staff. Tiny accommodations.
Stayed here for a conference a few blocks away at the Hilton. The price was right, but the rooms were downright tiny. Still, the place was extremely clean, and the staff was extremely nice and helpful. One tip: DO NOT RENT A CAR if you stay in this part of San Francisco. Parking is a nightmare, and my car was towed ($300+) for being parked on the street during rush hour. (The sign was far down the street and I didn't see it when I moved my car from the garage down the street to get ready for my conference.) Overall, this is in a decent location. It's a little sketchy after dark, but far from dangerous. The continental breakfast was nice, but crowded, and the offerings were sparse. This is not a place where a family with children would feel comfortable, because of the room size. I was alone, and I had trouble navigating the room after I unpacked.

Get a pass for the streetcars and take them everywhere. Chinatown is within walking distance, and a scooter rental or bike rental will get you to Fisherman's Wharf far easier than a car.

Great location, OK hotel
Great location right off of Union Square. Small renovated hotel, but bathrooms leave a lot to be desired. Overall, a friendly staff. Breakfast includes coffee/tea and stale muffins and danish. Stick with the coffee!

Great location, street rooms noisy.
Personnel very helpful and courteous. Continental breakfast a plus. Front rooms are noisy. Location only 2 blocks from cable car - makes it easy to go to Fisherman's Wharf and shopping. Would stay again for the price.
