Nice hotel, be careful of neighborhood
It was good, staff was nice, but when we checked in they said, don't EVER walk on Ellis street. Luckily we were taking a cab and you can only get into the hotel with a card after 10pm.

Nice hotel in a sketchy area
The hotel was a great location location as far as being in the heart of the city, however, the neighboring few blocks in all directions were VERY sketchy. We learned very quickly to take the alternate route given by the hotel to avoid a majority of the homeless and drug addicts who seemed to out-number the "normal" people walking on the streets. Other than the location, the hotel was VERY good for its value. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and spacious for what we expected. The breakfasts were good (and free). The staff was friendly and helpful. Just a quick walk, bus, or free hotel shuttle to Union Square. Overall I would recommend staying here if you are looking for a higher class experience at a unique boutique hotel for a very affordable rate.

Great place to stay!
We had a wanderful time and the rooms were perfect. We did need a mirror outside the bathroom, because we had three girls who had to get ready and to have a mirror outside the bathroom would have been helpful. Staff was super nice! The best part of the hotel was the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in at a hotel. Bathrooms are large very nice! Thanks!

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
I would say if at all possible don't drive your own car, you can walk or take the free shuttle pretty much everwhere you go. This would have saved us $200+ in parking fees.

Great Room for the Price
We found this hotel on a whim and was very happy to find it. There was friendly staff and the room was very, very nice. It was clean, modern looking, and very comfortable. I would highly recommend. [...] it exceeded our expectations considering we were going to pay $100 for a run-down looking place with an open bathroom. The only issue we had was the ice machine was all the way on the 7th floor and you have to have your key for the elevator unless you're going to the lobby and never coming back. Also, the breakfast wasn't great. There were no eggs just like waffles and yogurt or something, I don't even know I just skipped it.

Cova hotel -
Hotel itselft its nice, althought area is really bad. You can see homeless people begging for money and drougdealers in every corners. It's about 4 blocks to Union Square. Those were the most scariest 4 blocks I walk in SF. Free breakfast is fairly ok. We got sick from breakfast!!! There virtually no staff on duty except one person at the front desk. ( who barely spoke english. Dont get fool, this is clearly a 2 star hotel.

Great Hotel and Staff, Eclectic Location
Hotel has been extremly under rated. Location is close to everything, rooms and amenities are eco- friendly, continental breakfast with a view, outstanding. Fresh sheets, fluffy towels and minty fresh toiletries. Ellis street does have some homeless shelters so if your affraid of homeless people :( Don't go to San Francisco! Front desk makes guests aware of homeless shelter locations and advises which streets to go on to avoid them. Will always return to Cova and recommend it to others.

Dining tip:

Try the smaller Asian restuarants in the neighborhood. Authentic foods and better prices then you will find in the tourist area of China town.

Mid-week break in San Francisco Nov 2009
My husband and & I stayed 3 nights at the Cova in November 2009 and loved it. The Staff were really helpful regarding seeing the sights and whats happening in town whilst we were there. We had a fantastic stay. Only 7min walk to Union Square for shopping and cable cars. Plenty of dining options close by too. Cova had a complimentary bus that's available to take guests to Fisherman's Wharf every 4hrs and Union Square every hour upon request too that hardly anyone uses.

Nothing to fault, great hotel
We stayed for one night and our experience in this hotel was excellent. The rooms were spacious, the service was good, check out time was at noon and breakfast served until 11am (very generous!) and personally I've stayed in the Tenderloin before so the area didn't bother me at all. Very nice hotel.
