Enjoy Old World glamour under a modern roof

Designed by Philippe Starck, the Clift, A Morgan's Original Hotel, is located just steps from famous shopping venues and excellent attractions. The classic glamour of this hotel has been attracting celebrities for years, so long that this hotel has become a historic building. The Italian Renaissance exterior of the Clift, constructed in 1913, blends wonderfully with the modern glamour interior. The on-site Redwood Bar is a local and trendy favorite, with its towering 30-foot ceilings, digital art exhibitions, delicate lighting and velvet furniture.

3 Reasons To Stay :
  • Fusion of design and color in a masterfully architected hotel

Meeting facilities

Meeting Info
Clift's stylishly appointed Meeting Rooms are an ideal alternative to the typically staid conference room. On the Mezzanine level, three stunning rooms featuring dramatic white velvet curtains, etched Venetian mirrors and Philippe Starck's modern interpretation of classic banquet furniture are available for meetings & events. Formerly the private home of the late Frederick Clift, the hotel's original owner in 1913, the Spanish Suite now serves as an elegant private function room. Many period details remain, including the rich wood-paneled walls, two enormous crystal chandeliers, and wood-burning fireplace.

Elegant and comfortable

Really enjoyed our stay at the Clift. Excellent location, pleasant staff, and terrific design (thank you Philippe Starck). The hotel has a basic fitness centre, and the bathroom had a rather inconvenient layout. But the beds are comfortable, the food was good, and the service friendly.

Last minute trip

Overall my stay at the Clift was pretty good. I was dissappointed that they would not give us a decent rate to stay over another night so went to the hotel right across the street. They could use an upgrade in the gym. Didn't even bother to use it and I work out regularly. The bed was comfy. The room was small. The staff was exceptional! Didn't eat in the restaraunt, but my freind did and said it was very good.

I expect more from a Morgan hotel

The design of this hotel is definitely not the best work of designer Philippe Starck. The choice of colors and textures makes all common areas "dark" as opposed to glamorous and sophisticated. It feels very "nouveau riche" and "wanna be". The non-smoking policy is not greatly enforced in designated non-smoking area, I had to change room to have a smoke-free sleep. The room itself is way smaller than it looks on pictures and I felt I was more in a Andre Balasz facility than a Philippe Starck's one. The staff however is extremely professional and nice. The room service menu is boring and really not interesting. I had breakfast which was nice. Would I choose this place again ? NO. Not even with a great discount !

Anniversary Celebration

When we checked in, we explained it was our wedding anniversary. She upgraded us to a junior sweet! We also noticed the play Warhorse was showing next door so we asked the concierge if he could see if there were any tickets for that night! We were able to see the play (incredible). We had dinner at 5:30 at Boulevard, which is one of the top five restaurants in SF. A wonderful stay in the City.

Been here twice, still enjoy it

I love the swanky feel of the Clift. Colors are fun, dim lighting makes it feel modern, but some of the decor is definitely not modern. Tough to explain, but it's a great mix. The Redwood Room, aka the lobby bar, is a must see spot for at least one cocktail. Just avoid it on the weekends at night, as it essentially turns into a club. It's better around 4:30 when they first open, so you can take in its beauty. Location of the hotel is prime if Union Square is involved in your stay. Noise level isn't bad if you take a courtyard room rather than a street. Prices fluctuate a lot, so don't be in a rush to book well in advance unless you see prices dip under $300.

Clift needs to step it up - cool interior design alone doesn't make an experience special

One weekday night in a discounted room. $225 base. I know this hotel well. Been in its bar many times over the years. And one other guest room in 2009. I have not stayed here in the past because the overall value did not seem to be there: total cost vs what you get. There are so many good hotels in that 2-3 block area. Hotels that are consistently under $200. Free Wifi (not at Clift). Coffee. Newspapers. Happy Hours. Good (normal) bathroom amenities. Large flat screens vs small. I say the Clift is good if you're mostly into a designerly environment - and you dig floor to ceiling mirrors in your room - and don't care that they ask $$ for so many of the things that most other hotels provide for free. It's like they are providing a 4-star look, 4-star pricing, but 2-star amenities. Note: I am one who believes WiFi should be free everywhere. And in a hotel, it should be no different than soap. Note: avg cocktail cost in the Clift's lovely bar: $17
