You get what you pay for. The room is solid and the free breakfast is cool. The location is near many things but the upkeep of the hotel as a whole should be improved. They were under construction.

Front Desk people personality is as cold as the San Francisco weather. Hotel is still doing construction after a year and half. Sofa in room is dirty, should be thrown out.

Not Brilliant
In a slightly ropey area (wouldnt wander after dark) pool was closed throughout our stay, despite promise it would re-open on day 2! We were in front part of hotel -traffic VERY noisy as it accelerated from lights, from 6am right through till after midnight. also on paramedic route so lots of sirens! Breakfast pretty good though.

Chieftan Irish Bar (198 5th Street @ Howard San Francisco, CA 94103) had good food, good beer selection and good atmosphere, get very busy from early evening!

Wasted money
This hotel is a dump. The hotel description on Orbitz is very misleading. It looked like the exterior was being renovated at some point, but was never finished. The room was dirty & stunk of smoke. I immediately took the keys back to the front desk & left. I spent $192 on that room & I didn't stay the night. I wouldn't have stayed if it was free. I would stongly urge Orbitz to remove this hotel from their website.

Addendum: Diamond in The Rough? Maybe.
Wanted to add, that after we returned home we saw a charge for a telephone usage, but the manager waived the fee for us because of the circumstances we faced one evening regarding security. As long as they can maintain security on the premises this is definitely a place to stay in San Francisco!

Truly one af the worst experiences ever.
[...] $198.00 for that room. Other people were renting rooms for $50.00 and $100.00.My friend that was with me went to the office and heard this for her self.It was terrible. It was represented as a Best Western is was not. The place was surrounded by drug addicts. They were in the office eating the sugar. I am 72 years old, It was scary I only left my room once to go to eat at the wharf. [...] SO disappointed Candy Yates

won't come back
We needed to crush one night and booked it to save money, and not pay for the parking. We were given a room with really bad smell of cheap and dirty motels, probably 10 years of inside smoking with no proper cleaning. Also windows are so low and are right next to the side walk. They say they have a pool but it's located really inconveniently, almost on the street, there is a construction going on. I asked to change the room and was refused, and wasn't informed about any breakfast!

A Diamond in the rough? Maybe.
The biggest seller for us on our short time in traveling was "FREE" Parking & under the Best Western Umbrella. Free parking was great. Small lot, but there was always a spot for us. It is no longer under the Best Western Umbrella. The place is definitely under renovation and they start early in the day with the hammering. The exterior of the building had us worried for a sec, but the interior was 10x's better. Clean, comfortable, and just the right amount of room for our stay. The staff was friendly and check-in was hassle free. They share on-site security with another building which turned out to be troublesome for us one particular night as the weirdos decided to check in and cause a raucous. By weirdos, I mean inaudible yelling and lurking in the parking lot. The front desk called Police to make us feel safe and they handled the situation from there. There's a computer in the lobby for a quick look-up, but nothing more as it runs fairly slow and sometimes crashes. Not a bad place if you're looking for a place to crash at night as you venture out into the city, but I would definitely keep an eye out for later reviews after this post to see if security issues were addressed. Not the best area to walk around late at night because most establishments in that area are closed early and there are many nomads in the area asking for money. Again, the staff was great!

Plan ahead. Have a good idea of how you want to get to your in City destinations. We walked A LOT! Great dining: Cha Cha Cha in Haight/Ashbury; Sodini's Trattoria in North Beach; Boudin's at Fisherman's Wharf; Gott's at the Ferry Building; for awesome views: Twin Peaks, Top of The Mark inside Mark Hopkins on Nob Hill, Sir Frances Drake's Skylight Room.
