The Chancellor Hotel on Union Square is a charming 137 hotel located in the heart of San Francisco. Since 1914, it is still a classic boutique hotel serving guest who want to be surrounded by world class shopping, restaurants, and theatres at a good value. When you aren't shopping, dining, just step out of our lobby and ride the Powell Street Cable car past Chinatown, over nob hill, and by Lombard Street to Fisherman's Wharf. At Fisherman's Wharf, boats depart for Alcatraz Island, Sausalito, and Tiburon for some great sightseeing. The Business traveler will also find great value in our hotel because of its short walk to the Moscone Convention Center, free local calls, two line phones with data ports and the Chancellor Hotel's Clipper Ship meeting room. Every room, including the two room suites, are decorated in a classic European motif, and contains the amenities that our guests have come to expect. Additionally, the entire is completely non-smoking for your comfort. Wired or WirelesWe have what you need. The Lobby, Bar, Dining room, and Meeting Room have a free Wi-Fi signal available. Luques Restaurant & Bar, located just off the lobby of the hotel, offers breakfast, lunch, and room service. The menu features California Cuisine. The Bar is warm and approachable, featuring specialty cocktails, local draft, bottled beer and a pleasing and diverse wine list emphasizing the best that California has to offer.

chancellor

This hotel was old. The lobby was updated, but the rooms were run down and very small. Expensive for what you get.

great location

Within walking distance to lots of shopping, food, bars, and mass transit. Including my favorite, the Powell cable car line. Small room, but comfy bed and clean. We were on the 15th floor so there was hardly any traffic noise. No A/C but a nice cieling fan. Great staff, great hotel, but in my mind, not worth the price I payed for 3 nights in late summer.

San Fran sept 2014

Location on union square, close to Bart, close to civic center, close to Chinatown, and close to transportation. Excellent value. Every staff member I encountered had great customer service skills and we're very accommodating. The hotel has lots of character that you will never get in a chain. If I stay at union square I'm staying here again.

Why the hype?

Sure, the old world charm, rudder duck, pillow menu and central location are nice but it doesn't make up for the uncomfortable beds, lack of A/C, loud street noise, or rude and unaccommodating front desk staff.

Great location -- good hotel

It's not a modern, gleaming, chrome and glass hotel with a large, sparkling fitness center and pool. It is a classic, early-mid 20th century hotel with smaller rooms, charming character. At a perfect location. (Powell Street-Union Square) And a price thirty to fifty percent -- or more -- lower than the chrome and glass places. I would rather have paid less than $200/night, but this is San Francisco at Union Square. If your company is paying or you are loaded with cash and plan to hang around the hotel a lot with your family, you might be happier at one of the more modern hotels. But for those who want a nice, clean hotel, fine staff, great location, this is a good choice.

Excellent location! Hotel a bit drab...

I visited San Francisco for a romantic getaway with the hubby. The hotel is described as a boutique hotel with lots of character; my opinion, boutique =old and drab. There were no upgrades in the room. The furniture was too large for the room. The bathroom was extremely dated. A waste bin was placed underneath the sink to catch the drippings from the outdated plumbing. The toilet made a weird gurgling sound at night. The green carpeting in the hallway was old and worn. The upside, the staff was friendly and the location was excellent.

Loved it

Booked it cause of all the good reviews. Wasnt expecting much since we were just planning on staying there to sleep and rest. Room was perfect for the two of us, perfect place a block from Union Square and so many things to do walks away. Didnt want to pay for parking or a rent-a-car so we took the muni pretty much everywhere and theres a stop right on the blocl. Would recommend to others and wouldn't mind staying here again if I go to San Francisco.

Good things, Bad things

The location, staff, restaurant and some amenities were first rate. However, the room was cripplingly small and I nearly fell into the bathtub when I opened the room door! The room was very noisy, although this is not completely the hotel's fault, but also the location of the hotel. Overall, the good outweighs the bad at The Chancellor.
