Great place.

We enjoyed our stay here. It was a bit noisy in a street facing room, but earplugs were provided. Breakfast was good.

Good value

Stayed at the Carriage Inn for 4 days during my recent visit to SF. I was there primarily to see a few games at AT&T Park, which was a 20 minute walk from the hotel. The hotel itself is very clean and the entire staff is pleasant and helpful. The immediate neighborhood is far from glamorous but I never felt unsafe. Probably wise to avoid the surrounding blocks of Mission St. though as they were pretty gritty. From the hotel it is easy to access other areas of the city via BART and the Muni which are only a short walk away on Market St. Bottom line location is convenient, the price is reasonable and the hotel is a solid 3 stars.

More than adequate.

I stayed here for four nights, overall was quite good. Hotel is an easy walk from BART and Muni at Civic Centre. I found it a little tiring, but easy to just walk to areas like Fisherman's Wharf, or the ballpark. Pros: Room was spotless, every day, cleaning staff were willing to accomodate my sleeping until 9. One of two hotels where I've ever tipped the housekeeper. Other staff were friendly, easy check in and checkout. Staff member who handled my checkout asked if I needed help arranging transportation to the airport and held the door for me. Hotel has a nice theme going. Free breakfast boxes every morning, decent restuaruant "Custom Burger" across the road, owned by same people. Cons: Lots of homeless in the area, especially after dark, I found if you just ignored them, they let you alone. Wifi never worked properly, probably overloaded. With the possible exception of families with kids, would recommend for sure.

Sightseeing tip: Long walk from hotel

If you're on a budget, check out the municipal breakwater, west of Fisherman's Wharf, but east of the Presidio. Free access and the location gives you great shots of Alcatraz and a decent shot of the Golden Gate. It's around an hour to walk there from the Carraige Inn, or you could take a cable car up Hyde St. and save some time.

Convenient and cheap

I stayed at the Carriage Inn for a week while visiting San Francisco for a conference at Moscone Center. The hotel is in the perfect location for walking to the conference center, exploring Market Street and its shopping, or jumping on the BART or MUNI to explore the rest of the city. The room was clean and relaxing. The free breakfast (in individual boxes) was great to grab on my way out to the conference or take back up to my room. The pool and gym next door (free for Carriage Inn guests' use) were also an added bonus. Overall, I'd suggest this hotel if you're looking for one of the 'best bang for your buck' spots to stay in the city.

AQ Restaurant and Bar and Jamber Wine Pub are two great dinner spots very close to the Carriage Inn. There's also a great Mediterranean restaurant called SOMA a couple of blocks away at 5th and Mission that's great for a quick lunch or a cheap happy hour beverage.

It was average

I guess for a 3 star it was fine. There were no amenities. The workout facility is across the street in a sister hotel and was very basic. The internet connection was horrible! The staff was friendly, room was clean, and the bed was comfortable. I guess that makes it average.

Better options exist

I stayed here on a business trip, needing to go to a hotel on 4th St. each day as part of the trip. I thought staying down on 7th would be a good option to save money as opposed to staying closer to the conference. Not knowing much about SF, I didn't realize that the area south of 5th near Mission changed drastically. My 20-minute walk got sketchy on occasion. The hotel itself is okay, but there are comparably priced hotels in much better parts of downtown SF. The free continental breakfast was okay, but having it served to you in a box with no choices each morning gets really old fast. Also, I had to wait for about 6 or 7 minutes each morning for the shower water to heat up. The wireless internet connection is about as fast as dial-up, and the advertised fitness room is actually located in the sister hotel across the street. My advice is to pick something a couple blocks north...

Great hotel

The hotel and the staff are awesome. Our room was very big and spotless and full of charm. The location is very close to the BART/MUNI Civic Center stop. Breakfast was, as someone else said, a box with fruit, a pastry, yogurt, milk and juice. If you look in the little coffee closet you will find boxes of cereal too. The beds are very comfortable and the shower was nice, although you do have to wait a while for the hot water to kick in. My only negative observations are the noise and the location. The area is fine in the day, but I didn't feel comfortable walking around with just myself (I am a woman) and my daughter (age 4) after dark. I felt okay after dark if my husband was with us. There are a lot of drunks/homeless/drug addicts on the streets, and they do scream profanity a lot day and night. One followed my husband into the restaurant across the street and pestered him there. We did feel totally safe in the room. The hotel provides ear plugs and if your room faces the window, you will need them. We had noisy neighbors a couple of nights too. All that said, it was a fabulous value and reasonable trade offs for the price and the convenience of the location.
