Victorian style, family atmosphere and free breakfast near Union Square
Comfort, hospitality and convenience are plentiful at the Hotel Beresford, a quaint family-owned hotel blocks from the action of San Francisco's Union Square. From the street, the Victorian-style building looks like an apartment complex. Inside, however, cozy touches such as tufted chairs and whitewashed wood present a down-home feel. This feeling extends to the White Horse Tavern, the on-site restaurant, where pints outnumber flutes and the jukebox is always on.
Highlights
- Knowledgeable staff
- Walking distance to Union Square, Chinatown and City Hall
- On-site tavern is a replica of an old English pub

Convenient location: nice breakfast.
We chose the hotel because of the location, close to Union Square. The room was small but it was clean and comfortable. We only needed a place to sleep and this hotel was quite adequate.

fine for one night
The Beresford was fine for one evening. I was there with two of my elementary age kids and we were just in town for the night. The location was easy to get to many of the tourist attractions - we walked or used public transportation. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel is older and the street was a little noisy at night. The first room we were placed in had a broken window - when alerted we were moved to another room. This is an older hotel and fairly small. This would not be a place I would stay for anything longer than a couple of nights. But if you are not planning on spending a lot of time in the room and you want something fairly priced - it will work fine.

decent
Older very basic hotel. Room was okay- kinda had a funny smell. Not a hotel to hang out in the room in. Glad we were seeing the city most of the time. Overall- it wasn't horrible for how cheap it was- but id probably fork out the extra cash next time. :)

Great Location
The Beresford is in a great location if you want to be near Union Square and all the upscale shops, and finer hotels, but are on a tighter budget. It is also within reasonable walking distance of the Moscone Convention Center. The hotel is overall adequate for a business or pleasure visit to San Fransisco. It's only one block from Powell St. and the cable car lines. It is a little worn and in need of refurbishing and a more thorough general cleaning. Our rooms were clean, except for the carpets, which had spots. Furnishings are basic, functional and adequate for the price. Staff were helpful and knowledgeable. Continental breakfast was again adequate, however we found the restaurant's dinner fare to be very good and reasonably priced.

Excellent Value
This is a small hotel with small rooms which really is in need of some updating. However, the rooms and baths were very clean and there was a fully stocked honor bar in the room. The complimentary breakfast was well above average and the location is very convenient. Our stay got off to a bad start due to the lackadaisical attitude of the desk clerk... The rest of the hotel staff proved to be quite accommodating, but bad first impressions are hard to make up for.

Good Location
The Beresford was good in many ways. It was clean and comfortable and most staff were helpful and positive. Liked the internet access and the continental breakfast. The TV reception was poor on our TV, the man checking us in was not too helpful but other staff later were very helpful. The beds were comfortable. I would stay there again.
