Victorian style, family atmosphere and free breakfast near Union Square

Comfort, hospitality and convenience are plentiful at the Hotel Beresford, a quaint family-owned hotel blocks from the action of San Francisco's Union Square. From the street, the Victorian-style building looks like an apartment complex. Inside, however, cozy touches such as tufted chairs and whitewashed wood present a down-home feel. This feeling extends to the White Horse Tavern, the on-site restaurant, where pints outnumber flutes and the jukebox is always on.

Highlights
  • Knowledgeable staff
  • Walking distance to Union Square, Chinatown and City Hall
  • On-site tavern is a replica of an old English pub
  • Refrigerated honor bars in every room
Rooms

Efficiency trumps luxury at the Beresford. All of the property's 114 rooms come standard with private bathrooms, refrigerated honor bars and satellite television. Pets are welcome (fees apply).

Features

The Hotel Beresford is all about location; it sits two blocks from Union Square, where visitors can catch cable cars to numerous other parts of the city, including Fisherman's Wharf, the Financial District and more. It's also a short walk to Chinatown, City Hall or the Theater District. The hotel boasts knowledgeable staff members who can suggest itineraries for exploring town.

All guests receive complimentary continental breakfast daily, as well as access to a public Internet terminal in the lobby.

Dining

Old England comes alive inside the White Horse Restaurant and Tavern, the on-site eatery. The establishment offers pre-theater dinner specials for patrons rushing to catch a show. It also serves Harp and Guinness, two mainstays of United Kingdom pub life.

Nice for city visit

descent hotel with perfect location. It is close to the downtown, China Town and most of the attractiona like Wharf, Golden Gate or park are in close distance. The rooms are small and descent condition. Wifi only available on the first floor, no cabl econnection in the rooms. Breakfast is minimal, some bakery stuff, but it is nice. The value for the price is excellent, it is a cheap hotel with descent service and perfect location. Perfect for city visit for couple of days.

To rent a bicycle in SF is an excellent idea. Visit the Golden Gate recreational Area, ride along the Wharf, ride in the city is perfect time to spend time. There are nice bike rentals in the city everywhere with nice predefined routes. Mybe it is not cheap, but for sure worth for the money.

Upgrade needed

This is a nice hotel but needs to be ugraded. Refurbishment is needed. Plus cable service is limited and no room wireless internet is avaible. Restaurant was nice and the food I had was delicous and well prepared. The bar is small but intimate. I enjoyed it. The restaruant/bar service was excellent. That was one area of the hotel were I thought the older styly was attractive. Maid service was great. The car service is a bit pricy but works if you are in and out for sure.

Convenient location: nice breakfast.

We chose the hotel because of the location, close to Union Square. The room was small but it was clean and comfortable. We only needed a place to sleep and this hotel was quite adequate.

3 day stay

We spent 3 enjoyable nights at the Beresford. The location was very acccessible to the cable cars and buses. The staff were very helpful and we found their information to be accurate. The morning breakfast was a good start to the day. We appreciated the computer accessibility but think that perhaps a sign could be posted to suggest a time limit for an individual guest. Our only real concern was the window in the bathroom, I believe it is called a jalousie window. It was very drafty in the bathroom and made taking a shower despite the warm water a cold experience. We kept the bathroom door closed most the time to prevent the cold draft from entering the bedroom. Don't understand why this type of window is needed.

Great location, Outstanding staff

The hotel is just two blocks from Union Square in a very safe and walker friendly neighborhood. While we were there a tour group from Great Britain was there which added charm to the already old world ambiance. A previous poster mentioned the issues with getting their car from the valet service. Yes, due to parking issues in San Fran, you have to wait 15-30 minutes to have your car retrieved from a local parking garage, but they went above and beyond to make this part of the experience a positive one for us. They retrieved the car at no expense for us when we forgot an item after the car had already been parked. They also talked with the local parking garage to keep them from charging us for an extra day when we were just hours late to pick up the car. I overheard their advice to the Brits regarding recommendations for local restaurants and they did so with both enthusiasm and with great tips. I would highly recommend this hotel for its price, location, charm and helpful staff.

San Fran awesome trip!

Cabs are very expensive, the trolley is a must whil in San Fran and it's $5 one way but you have to do it so with that being said, there is a bus that is $2 all day which will take you all over....

Cute spot

In town for concert. Valet only $24 - reasonable, but parking garage right up street (not sure on pricing). Check in a breeze, bag carried to room, small room w/queen bed, but fine for single. Iron & board in room, but no hairdryer - need to get at front desk. "natural" a/c. No need to eat, but White Horse bar/restaurant attached. Overall a good place.

charming hotel great location!

We live here in the east bay but wanted to stay in the city to get to two events on different days. The hotel was centrally located to where we needed to be. For travellers, it is downtown area so civic center (taxi), union square (walk), financial district (walk), north beach (taxi) are close by . The staff were nice. The atmosphere and interior decor were charming victorian time period. The rooms were very clean, nice and simple decor. The only thing noted as didn't like but not very important as far as my needs were the rooms were small but that seems standard for many older san fran buildings and hotels. Also, you are unable to control the heat. it is manned by the building so it was chilly at night but luckily the bedding did a good job of keeping me warm.
