Victorian style, family atmosphere and free breakfast near Union Square

Comfort, hospitality and convenience are plentiful at the Hotel Beresford, a quaint family-owned hotel blocks from the action of San Francisco's Union Square. From the street, the Victorian-style building looks like an apartment complex. Inside, however, cozy touches such as tufted chairs and whitewashed wood present a down-home feel. This feeling extends to the White Horse Tavern, the on-site restaurant, where pints outnumber flutes and the jukebox is always on.

Highlights
  • Knowledgeable staff
  • Walking distance to Union Square, Chinatown and City Hall
  • On-site tavern is a replica of an old English pub
  • Refrigerated honor bars in every room
Rooms

Efficiency trumps luxury at the Beresford. All of the property's 114 rooms come standard with private bathrooms, refrigerated honor bars and satellite television. Pets are welcome (fees apply).

The Hotel Beresford is all about location; it sits two blocks from Union Square, where visitors can catch cable cars to numerous other parts of the city, including Fisherman's Wharf, the Financial District and more. All guests receive complimentary continental breakfast daily, as well as access to a public Internet terminal in the lobby.

Pleasant for the price, inexp. parking

Convenient Union Square location, close to cable car line and Chinatown. Room was very clean, comfortable. Classy, old-style hotel feel. $24 valet parking was a big plus (compare at $60). Friendly, responsive staff. Adequate continental breakfast.

Excellent Value

This is a small hotel with small rooms which really is in need of some updating. However, the rooms and baths were very clean and there was a fully stocked honor bar in the room. The complimentary breakfast was well above average and the location is very convenient. Our stay got off to a bad start due to the lackadaisical attitude of the desk clerk... The rest of the hotel staff proved to be quite accommodating, but bad first impressions are hard to make up for.

Favorable Location near Union Square

We wanted a relatively inexpensive ;ocation near Union Square that had valet parking. The beresford met those needs. In addition it was clean and the continental breakfast was better than most. Be prepared for small rooms and even smaller baths, however.

Good value

I was only in the City for two days and had activities planned for the entire time. I was at the hotel only to sleep. The room was larger than many, very clean and comfortable. The service was efficient and friendly. I did not want to use the pool or anything similar. The White Horse, an attached pub, was small and lacking in atmosphere; the barkeeper was friendly. The kitchen was "under renovation" so no food was available.

our vacation

Incredibly friendly staff. Clean rooms. In the midst of downtown, so we could walk to Chinatown (VERY close) and to Japantown. Easy access (within 2 blocks) to cablecar line. We were pleased with our choice and would be very comfortable staying there again! Restaurant kitchen under renovation, so only ate the continental breakfast and complimentary hotdogs in the tavern. Dresser and furniture in room a bit nicked and could use some attention, but that was a minor detail compared to everything else.

Chinatown is just a short walk away (starting at the Chinatown Gate). Be prepared for walking on pavement! If you don't like the complementary continental breakfast, there is a lovely Mediterrian breakfast restaurant 1 block on the way to Chinatown.

Great little hotel

This was our third trip to this hotel. We love its location (2 blocks from Union Square and just off Powell Street), its continental breakfast, the small but very pleasant pub-type bar, and the friendly staff--they all remember our faces each time we go and greet us with a big smile and a "nice to see you back!"

Dining tip: In Hotel

For the next couple of months, the dining room at the hotel is closed for remodelling. But, just a few doors down the street is the Marines Memorial Club which has a wonderful restaurant on the twelfth floor with a great view. And there are several restaurants of various types within a 2 block walk.

Comfy and in the heart of everything!

We stayed Thurs-Sun over 4th of July weekend. The hotel was clean, comfy and close to everything. Just a few blocks from the Powell BART station - no need to take a shuttle or cab to the airport and also close to the Mason-Powell or Hyde-Powell cable car lines. Because it was few blocks from Union Square we were able to get around the entire city quickly and easily. Tons of stuff to do close by and it was nice having a quick bowl of cereal or a muffin and coffee to start our day. Also the fresh fruit was a nice snack each afternoon - we grabbed a couple of apples for the road each morning! The staff was friendly and helpful and the amenities were clean and nice. Great water pressure too!!!

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Take the BART to Powell street station....Buy a 3 day MUNI pass at baggage claim at the airport for 21.00. The cable cars are $6.00 PER PERSON one way so the pass pays for itself in the first day!!! We hopped on and off all day as well as the F line streetcar which goes from fisherman's wharf all along market street to Castro district. We also took the #30 stockton bus to the exploratorium...

A GOOD PLACE TO STAY...MAYBE A LITTLE SMALL

The Beresford Hotel at Sutter street gives you a great location, two blocks from U. Square. The staff at the Hotel is great: They're respectful and kind. I really liked the hotel, however, I asked for a smoking room, it was clean, cozy but very small, specially the bathroom. Beside that, I will gladly return to the Beresford.
