Victorian style, family atmosphere and free breakfast near Union Square

Comfort, hospitality and convenience are plentiful at the Hotel Beresford, a quaint family-owned hotel blocks from the action of San Francisco's Union Square. From the street, the Victorian-style building looks like an apartment complex. Inside, however, cozy touches such as tufted chairs and whitewashed wood present a down-home feel. This feeling extends to the White Horse Tavern, the on-site restaurant, where pints outnumber flutes and the jukebox is always on.

Highlights
  • Knowledgeable staff
  • Walking distance to Union Square, Chinatown and City Hall
  • On-site tavern is a replica of an old English pub
  • Refrigerated honor bars in every room
Rooms

Efficiency trumps luxury at the Beresford. All of the property's 114 rooms come standard with private bathrooms, refrigerated honor bars and satellite television. Pets are welcome (fees apply).

Features

The Hotel Beresford is all about location; it sits two blocks from Union Square, where visitors can catch cable cars to numerous other parts of the city, including Fisherman's Wharf, the Financial District and more. It's also a short walk to Chinatown, City Hall or the Theater District. The hotel boasts knowledgeable staff members who can suggest itineraries for exploring town.

All guests receive complimentary continental breakfast daily, as well as access to a public Internet terminal in the lobby.

Dining

Old England comes alive inside the White Horse Restaurant and Tavern, the on-site eatery. The establishment offers pre-theater dinner specials for patrons rushing to catch a show. It also serves Harp and Guinness, two mainstays of United Kingdom pub life.

Beresford Hotel

I live in the bay area and stayed here because I was running in the SF marathon and wanted a place that was relatively inexpensive and not too far from the starting line. Overall, a good place to sleep, shower and get on with your life. The room was clean and the hotel felt safe. The building is fairly old, but it has been remodeled on the inside, maybe within the last 10 years - so that's OK. Room was a bit small, but I would expect that given the vintage of the building. Some people complained that they have actual room keys and not the key cards you see these days - not sure why that's a problem, though. There was no A/C, which really isn't an issue 95% of the time in SF, but it would be unpleaseant the 5% of the time it gets too hot in SF. I slept with the window open (btw - no screens, but then again, there were no bugs) and the only complaint was that I could hear the fire engines and such throughout the night (but that's not Beresford's fault - that's just life in The City). Staff was friendly and helpful - they were even able to get me checked in early, which was nice. Decent location - about 15 min walk from Powell St BART. The only thing I missed, really, was the lack of wireless internet access - something one comes to expect in 2009. On the overall, it did what I needed it to do and I'd stay here again.

Could have been better if the room was bigger, more comfortable. Disappointed with the free breakfast buffet and the parking fees.

The Economical Place to Stay

It was just fine; centrally located; clean; quiet; no AC but in San Francisco you don't need it. Really a wonderful bargain. I'd easily go back.
