Victorian style, family atmosphere and free breakfast near Union Square

Comfort, hospitality and convenience are plentiful at the Hotel Beresford, a quaint family-owned hotel blocks from the action of San Francisco's Union Square. From the street, the Victorian-style building looks like an apartment complex. Inside, however, cozy touches such as tufted chairs and whitewashed wood present a down-home feel. This feeling extends to the White Horse Tavern, the on-site restaurant, where pints outnumber flutes and the jukebox is always on.

Highlights
  • Knowledgeable staff
  • Walking distance to Union Square, Chinatown and City Hall
  • On-site tavern is a replica of an old English pub
  • Refrigerated honor bars in every room
Rooms

Efficiency trumps luxury at the Beresford. All of the property's 114 rooms come standard with private bathrooms, refrigerated honor bars and satellite television. Pets are welcome (fees apply).

Features

The Hotel Beresford is all about location; it sits two blocks from Union Square, where visitors can catch cable cars to numerous other parts of the city, including Fisherman's Wharf, the Financial District and more. All guests receive complimentary continental breakfast daily, as well as access to a public Internet terminal in the lobby.

Dining

Old England comes alive inside the White Horse Restaurant and Tavern, the on-site eatery. The establishment offers pre-theater dinner specials for patrons rushing to catch a show. It also serves Harp and Guinness, two mainstays of United Kingdom pub life.

Great location, Outstanding staff

The hotel is just two blocks from Union Square in a very safe and walker friendly neighborhood. While we were there a tour group from Great Britain was there which added charm to the already old world ambiance. A previous poster mentioned the issues with getting their car from the valet service. Yes, due to parking issues in San Fran, you have to wait 15-30 minutes to have your car retrieved from a local parking garage, but they went above and beyond to make this part of the experience a positive one for us. They retrieved the car at no expense for us when we forgot an item after the car had already been parked. They also talked with the local parking garage to keep them from charging us for an extra day when we were just hours late to pick up the car. I overheard their advice to the Brits regarding recommendations for local restaurants and they did so with both enthusiasm and with great tips. I would highly recommend this hotel for its price, location, charm and helpful staff.

Not bad

Free wi-fi, but only in the lobby. "Continental Breakfast" which included some danish, coffee and juice. Valet parking offered for $27/day. They parked my car and returned it without incident. Overall, it was good for what it was and suited my needs.

My night in SF(:

I went to see my boyfriend who's away at college and the hotel was conveniently across from his school. The room was kind of small and less than I expected but that was my first time in a one-bed room. It was also VERY noisy, my window looked out onto Sutter Street and I had a hard time sleeping but that was expected. Overall everything was great.

Charming hotel, friendly staff

The hotel is conveniently located in downtown, just two block east from Union Square and very close to cable cars and public transport. Charming hotel with lots of character. Definitely a deal!! Courteous and friendly staff, always helpful. Comparable to the service you get from 5-star hotels. Would definitely stay here again and recommend to friends and families.

great location good bargain

The room was clean, and the staff were very helpful. unfortunately while we were there the kitchen was under renovation. The breakfasts were served in the attached pub which was adequate. The best feature of the hotel was the location and it's nearness to public transportation and also walking distance to many sights.

when in San Francisco be prepared to walk and allow time to use the public transportation. I f you have never been there before a bus tour is a great way to become acclimated. Bring two pair of walking shoes so you can switch off.

Beresford Hotel is a good value!

This was our first trip to San Francisco. The Beresford was a good hotel for us, because it was affordable and close to the cable car line and Union Square. We bought the transportation passes so that we could use any public transportation in the city and that was well worth the money. It made the trip to Fisherman's Wharf very easy. The complimentaty breakfast was a pleasant surprise and we had fun talking to a couple from Germany while we ate.

For the price, it can't be beat!

I attended a conference in the city so I did not spend a great deal of time in the hotel. It was clean, the staff was helpful, and the location is superb - easy to walk to all the cool places of SF and easy to use public transportation!
