It's a nice hotel, but not fancy
When I booked our hotel room I was between the Warwick and this hotel. I am happy with my choice, which saved me $50 a night. It's not a fancy hotel. It has personality. Good location. The rooms were clean. The bed was comfortable enough. As long as you closed the windows, noise wasn't a problem. Good water pressure in the shower. Their coffee was great. The housekeeping staff was really nice. Actually most people in the city were nice. We didn't eat at the restaurant, but it smelled fantastic. I would definitely stay there again.

Welcome to the Hotel California!
The hotel itself had a lot of charming "deco" touches & CA kitch(loved the mural on the ceiling and quotes above the crown molding in our room!). The staff was very helpful and friendly- before our arrival and during, and having the Millenium Restaurant attached to the site was a real plus. While the location is technically the theatre district, it was clear that it was on the fringe. Turn left out of the hotel and in a couple of blocks you hit great restaurants (Pinecrest Diner, Biscuits & Blues and many more) as well as the theatres, shops & energetic nightlife. Turn right or below Geary and walk down, say Jones St., and it gets a little sketchy. Avoid it walking alone at night...Exception to check out: Bourbon & Branch (a speakeasy! make a reservation and they will give you a password!) and the line-out-the-door-popular Dottie's True Blue Cafe. A 10-15 minute walk to the BART, Union Square & Chinatown. While the front desk staff was good, the housekeeping was sub-par. No handtowels when we 1st checked in, but surprise!- they were there the next day--but no replacement box of tissues! Our phone was not connected to the wall(!?!) but we didn't realize it until we were checking out and wanted to call downstairs for a taxi! Only snag- When booking this hotel, CheapTickets included continental breakfast in the room description and price. Upon check-in, this became an issue as the hotel usually charges extra for it. I showed my CheapTickets receipt and they (a bit begrudgingly) honored it, but this needs to be addressed between the hotel and this site... The shot of "Welcome Tequila" and wine & cheese in the evenings were all nice little touches.

Sightseeing tip:
Short drive from hotel
Fisherman's Wharf is NOT very walking friendly from the hotel (Those steep streets!) but a lot of fun to get to by cable car--and free! The trick is being patient enough to wait for a car with enough space... If you "cab it", you can expect to pay $9-12 one way, inlcuding tip.

Excellent Choice
This is an excellent hotel -- friendly, helpful staff; the rooms are clean and uniquely decorated. THe hotel is quiet and close to union square, so it is very convenient. The front desk welcomes you with a tequila shot upon check-in. I booked this after reading a positive review on-line and just echo it here -- this is an affordable and great hotel. The only downside was that it was uncharacteristically hot in San Francisco when we were there, and the rooms were a bit warm during hte day because of no air conditioning. They provide fans and it does cool down at night.

Excellent hotel
This hotel was very nicely decorated, comfy, clean and front staff were always very helpful. Bed was firm and comfortable. The only thing was the night noise that echoed between the hotel and the next building. Mainly on Friday night but then the hotel couldn't do anything about that.

It was a little bang for the buck
I decided to suprise my husband with a suprise trip to San Francisco for Father's Day weekend. When we arrived at our hotel the clerk was very nice and funny. The shot of tequilla wasn't bad either. The hotel was in a very good location. We were able to walk to all the hot spots of The City. The only complaint that i had was that our room was way too small, but it was still a good stay!

charming, but with caveats
I was in town to enjoy a stay at a charming yet relatively inexpensive hotel with personality, and that's what I got. I spent most of my time driving to functions in Berkeley related to a niece's graduation, and the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly in helping me with directions. I certainly felt the charm and personality of the place, and loved that aspect of it -- loved my individual room as well, though I would've liked a headboard that was stiff/connected to the frame, as well as the desk I'd been led to expect by my online reservation. Street noise could've been a problem, but wasn't this weekend. Note for summer arrivals: nice ceiling fans, but no air conditioning. Still, I got what I paid for at a fair value, EXCEPT ... The valet service was terrible. When I arrived I wasn't sure where to park (after repeated requests); turned out I had arrived at 4 and several people squawked that it was a bad tow-risk time, and they needed the desk to give me a receipt quickly. When I asked for it, I was asked why haven't you moved your car? Oh, you shouldn't have left it there. And etc. Finally someone on the valet team came in and told us what he needed to move the car (besides the keys, which I'd given him). Just a big mess. Really added to the anxiety of what was already a very stressful 5-mph-drive up 101 that Thursday (holiday traffic, perhaps?). No problems with the valet while there, though it was hard to find a place to leave the car when I arrived about 10 on Friday night. But when I was leaving for the airport, about 4 a.m., the valet staff told the hotel's desk staff that they were on break and would get to it in a while. I'm glad my schedule gave me enough time to reach my flight! The hotel service did his best to movtivate them. The weak value of the valet service, given its expense, is the reason I don't rate the hotel 5 on value. And I'd rank the check-in a 5+ were it not for the valet service. But thumb's up to all the front desk staff. Otherwise, a nice stay. If I had reason to stay specifically in that area, I would still look at Hotel California, depending on how much I had to use a rental car. The charm wasn't enough, however, to make up for inconveniences if the location is at all out of your way.

Entertainment tip:
Short drive from hotel
There's much in the Berkeley/North Bay area, and the staff is very good at helping you find directions. Beware the valet service, though. The hotel area is great for fine arts within a walking distance, and other interesting neighborhoods, like the Castro, are a short trip away on public transportation. Quite safe, for those worried about such things. But with the valet rates and service, better to keep the rental car parked when you can.

Great Location
We spent a few extra dollars to reserve a "deluxe" room described as "ovrsized, desk, wifi net, fridg, cofmkr". What we got was a very small room with no refrigerator. (They did bring one to our room when we asked about it.) Other than that, we had a wonderful stay. Lots of great restaurants and Union Square close by!

TERRIBLE service and fasly advertised!
My husband and I arrived at the hotel parking in front in the (designated) valet area. As I went inside to check in, the valet ran up to my husband and in broken english said if we didn't move our car immediatley it would be towed! The front desk attended was discourtious and was of no help. We ended up parking in a near by garage! Later we went down to the "Wine Reception" at 5:00 which was a joke. It consisted of 2 caraf's of the world's worst wine! with old cheese and grapes, while the front desk associate monitored you! If you want a nice stay and nice wine reception...go to the Tuscan Inn by the Warf. It's also a Best Western and they people there were great. The only upside to "Hotel California" is that they were very close to Union Square and the rooms were very old but very clean.
