The hotel was very historic looking and very clean. Elevators were a little small and scarry, but u can always take the stairs! It was not the quitest rooms but u are among down town san fran so I was not expecting that. All together we had a great stay

Escape to Alcatraz
San Fran escape
The Hotel's location is good and the price was very good. It is near some great restaurants and within 3 blocks of union square.. about 8 blocks from the Chinatown Gate.. We liked the quaintness.. colors, staff were perfect, location, wine/cheese in the evening.. tequila upon check-in. Anything we needed/wanted the staff was there to bring it to us! On the down side... NOISY downtown location. Kind of a catch 22.. it's on a corner, which means you can get a room with bay window.. but then you hear everything from the street below, such as the garbage truck at 6 AM, the fights, yelling/screaming, sirens.. all like we were sleeping on the street. The bed linens didn't fit the bed either. We woke up king of entangled in the sheets every morning. All in all... I'd stay here again.. it's small and quaint.. The restaurant attached to the hotel is "vegetarian" only... so we always went out and about for food. The staff gave us great tips on restaurants and how to get around the city.

Short walk from hotel
To get to Fisherman's Wharf, without taking the cable car ($5 one way/person), walk to Powell and Market and board the "F" train. The fee is $2 and is good for 2 hours. It will take you down Market to the Embarcadero and then on up to Fisherman's Wharf. Great scenic ride too.

Lots of Character
The price was nice, but the stay was not great. Beautiful hotel with a great location and the rooms were clean. However, the elevator didn't work all week, the wireless didn't work for a couple of days, and the street was darn noisy for my room. Not a bad deal for the price, but be tolerant for what you get on a bargain.

Hotel California Review
We vacationed in San Francisco for a week and decided on this hotel. It was clean, in a nice location, and the staff were friendly enough. The rooms are somewhat small, but that is really the only complaint I have. For the price, the Hotel California did the job.

Great Location
It was a fun hotel to stay at....Older building but all the modern needs. It was a great location, close to all the shopping in Union Sq. as we walked everywhere! Only downside it was a bit of a treck form the airport.

Adequate for our needs
Our experience was fine. The location was good for our needs. The room was very small...very little room to put things. No desk. There was a fair amount of night time noise on the street.

Just OK
Free Wi-Fi & breakfast were great, but the room was very average. Towels & shower had "foreign" hairs on them on arrival. Better hotels at similar prices.

Tiny room, but it's SF
Pretty convenient location, and for SF, not a bad price. Pretty creaky old building, and I think my window was painted part-way open, so I couldn't shut it all the way. Important tip: do NOT go 2 blocks west--that's a really dicey area called Tenderloin. Google it and you'll see what I mean.

All in all pretty good
We arrived on a warm day and the room was quite hot there is no air con and for the rest of the stay the room remained that way, I think it really needs air con. It also was a bit noisy being on the main street. The rooms were cute and clean, good location as it was right amongst it all, but as I said noisy for sleeping. Staff weren' t very friendly.
