Not bad

The tenderloin is not a good area. We had no problems going out in the daytime. Night time is a little scary. Super close to union square area, trains, subway, stores. The hotel staff was really nice, talkative, and very helpful with fun things to do around town. Also, if you forget your laptop or internet gadget, free internet in the lobby!

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Go on the vampire walking tour! It was one of the most informative tours with a wonky twist. A history of how the town was started. Only $20 a person its on Taylor and California. I think you can look it up on viator or some other travel website.

Staff unhelpful, lock on door was poor

I left early and the man at checkout refused to give me a receipt or any proof that I had checked out. Why did I leave? (1) The door on the room had no lock that couldn't be open by a hotel key. No way to lock the door securely at night. (2) The staff refused to connect my sister with my room when she called. I didn't expect fancy, and could put up with the fact that the coffeepot had a huge and dangerous chip in it, and in general the room was shopworn and run down. But the lack of security and refusal to connect calls to my room made the hotel completely unacceptable. I was very shocked because every other hotel in which I have stayed had a way to securely lock the door from the inside. The staffperson at checkout didn't ask me WHY I was leaving early, he just started arguing (Before I said anything) that he wouldn't refund me any money.

Just Ok

The price was right. Just don't have much expectations about the room/hotel/breakfast. And be careful when stepping out at night as the neighborhood is not that great.

Narly! Tiny Room & Bad Area!

The room was so small that the door hit the bed when you tried to get into it! The hotel is located in the homeless part of the city, across the street from a boarded up church that serves as a homeless hangout. There was a man peeing on the sidewalk right in front of the hotel that actually asked us for money WHILE he was urinating! Yikes!!! Spend a little more and STAY AWAY FROM THIS AREA! A few blocks down the street can make a world of difference!

Good location, average hotel

We arrived to have the front desk clerk tell us he could not locate our reservation, but he could place us in a double room that was available. When I produced my Orbitz confirmation with a king bed reserved it suddenly appeared. The room was very simple, old but clean. No frills. Our view was of a central courtyard construction area. We were only there one night but if more I would NOT have been happy.

Inexpensive and Decent, but Nothing Special

When I first walked in, I was put off by seeing the dirty-looking chairs in the lobby, and then finding a similarly dirty-looking chair in my room. Whether they were actually dirty or only stained, I don't know, but they made for a bad first impression. After that, though, I had a decent stay at an inexpensive hotel. Things I liked: a large room, a large TV, and plenty of water flow in the shower. The room was clean. The breakfast was muffins only, but with 3 or 4 varieties of muffins at least, along with coffee, apple juice, and orange juice. I appreciated that the juice wasn't watered down or artificial-tasting, like it often is at inexpensive hotels.

Not bad

I was looking for a simple place to sleep near Union Square -- this hotel served that purpose. Cons: The lobby is dirty and small; the rooms are small; the hotel is not in the safest location (although I never felt unsafe). Pros: Price, location (a short walk to Union Square or street cars; a 40 minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf), the staff were extremely friendly. If you're looking to save some money and all you need is a place to sleep, I'd recommend it.

Scared of Bed Bugs

Bed Bugs

Stayed 6/26/2011 in room 309. Appeared clean but we found a strange bug on the sheets the next morning. Thought it was a tic at first but it wasn't. I know there has been a lot of publicity regarding bed bugs so I googled it when we got home and it was without a doubt a bed bug. I emailed the hotel through their website and asked if they were aware of this problem but they have not responded yet.

More than adequate

Good location for the tourists, events, or sports. Close to Union Square, Theater District, Chinatown, Museums (Cable Car), AT&T Park and the Wharf. Walk almost everywhere; or easy public transportation. You have to be careful at night; and sensitive to the neighborhood. Clean, comfortable room. Friendly staff.

A very bad Hotel experience!

The hotel stuff, especially in the evening when we arrived, was very unfriendly. The hotel lobby and our room did not have any Air Conditioning, telephone to the lobby and ice at the same floor.I had to use my cell phone to call the hotel in order to inquire where the ice maker was and only to find out that the unit was at the lobby. San Francisco was hot when we arrived. These negative features of the hotel should have been informed us upfront so we know what we are getting ourselves into. [...]
