Walking up stairs with your luggage is a special treat if your in shape. For the money it's worth it. Just don't have a lot stuff to carrier.

Great value!
For a budget hotel, this is a very good hotel. While it doesn't look like much from the outside, the rooms are spacious, clean, and have a refrigerator and microwave, and the internet is free. If you use the internet, make sure you pick the one for your building, as they have separate internet for each building. It is VERY convenient... only a block from the Marina District Chestnut Street shopping area with Apple store, Gap, and lots of good restaurants. 24-hour Walgreens is across the street. Bus stop is one block away that takes you to Fisherman's Wharf and downtown. Front desk staff was very courteous and helpful.

Nasty, Price goes up Quality goes DOWN
Not Happy Campers, We had to stay some place near the hospital as my husband is going to the city for several surgeries. We stayed here 4 times, each time the price we up and the rooms got worst. Nasty! The last time was the worst the curtains were falling off the windows and the room furniture was too dirty to sit on, the tv's are bad in all the rooms and fixtures are missing. Nasty place not going to stay there ever again. We were not happy with the treatment I asked for a specific room 2 times and they said no problem and I was given a room with the floor tilting down and everything on a slant. They should learn what scratch remover is also .. second hand and broken furniture. Didn't want to sit on anything! The bed covers are the worst very worn and dirty. Nope!!! Never again we really tried and this time was it.

The place is really big and cleaned. The bad thing was that the fridge was off and had a towel inside so we couldn't put our sodas inside. But I have gone to other places and is nothing compare to this one. Is really nice and it was like if it was a suite with sofa and a table everything was nice I really loved it but the only minor thing was the fridge the rest was nice.

Remember to pack earplugs!
It is located very close to the Presidio and the Exploritorium. It is clean and good for the price. The staff were friendly. They only had juice and coffee in the lobby. Very loud street noise so be sure to pack earplugs!!

Shopping tip:
Short walk from hotel
There is a Walgreens right across the street from the hotel. There are also a lot of nice shops on Chestnut which is just one street over. In fact, Chestnut is a popular shopping area and it is enjoyable to walk it.

It was ok for the money. ...
It was ok for the money. The problem was the musty smell in the room. We went and bought some room deodorizer right away and that seemed to take care of most of it. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms were nice sized. The pool was always locked so we couldn't use it and there wasn't much parking, but you find that all over town. We were always able to find a parking spot close to the hotel.I guess we got what we paid for.

never again
Check in was easy. The majority of the staff were very pleasant and accomodating. The room was large and bedding, furniture etc all clean and not worn. There was a fridge and a microwave. That all good. However the floors really squeaked, the halls smelled like damp mould and part of the ceiling in the hall was falling down. Railings felt unsafe. I was prepared for the busy area and I've stayed in enough European B&B's that I dont expect 4 star and can deal with quirkiness. However my girls were rather uncomfortable with the other tenants, mostly male, some leaving the emergency exit propped open so they could sneakout and smoke, men continously working on cars in the parking area so we couldn't open our curtain or go to the window without attracting attention. ALL of that aside,..the clinker was no hot water in the am. When discussing this with the mgr he laughed and said that being on the 3rd floor meant we had to have patience: that it might take some time. I was very polite and asked if there was any way to renegotiate staying at the hotel as this was a very special time for me and my dtrs after some losses in our family (and this was only night one and we had 2 more to go) He became somewhat irritable with me and said there was no negotiating and if I was to choose to leave it had better be before 4 or he would be charging me an extra day...which if you do the math made No Sense at all.... Needless to say I went back to the room, my dtrs finished taking cold showers and we packed up and found another hotel...Live and learn. I had to pay out for this other hotel and forget about any money spent at the ALPHA. No wonder I can only afford to go away for a few days only every few years!!! My advice, spend a bit more and go somewhere else. I would never go to the ALPHA again....
