I love this hotel, been here before, but just didn't expect their refrigerators to work anymore. Room was great and location ... is perfect, night time its very peaceful but the hotel is in front of the NBC studios so their were all these idiots protesting Obama throughout the day, other then that hotel itself was perfect, just wish they'd get their refrigerators working.

Its in front of the Horton plaza so it's a short walk to all the nightlife in the gaslamp district. There's also a bar downstairs which works just fine and a bunch of stores across the street for anything you would need.

Great Hotel!
Katy Jun 29, 2009
The hotel service was great - the staff was very friendly and willing to help. The rooms were beautiful and clean. The ... location was perfect - walking distance to plenty of shops and resaurants. The only negative was the extra costs were very pricey. For example, the parking was $28/day without any mention of this until check-out. The bar in the lobby sold only water bottles that were $4-5 a piece. Other than this, the experience was fantastic!

Excellent location. Walking distance to shopping and Gaslamp area. Rooms are big, clean, with excellent furnishings/bedding. ... Not your average 4 star hotel! If I had to be picky, my two less than positive issues were no ice readily available on floors (have to call room service which can take up to 30 min.) and street noise early in the am.

What a 5 star hotel feels like
Miami Mom May 26, 2009
This hotel was such a wonderful gem in the heart of this beautiful city. I got an incredible deal on Orbitz for $149.00 per ... night. Everything was impeccable, from the beautifully appointed rooms, to the attentive staff, fantastic location, and great concierge. The room service breakfast was pricey but lovely. The piano bar is a delight, make sure you have some coffee drinks and dessert. I did not get to the afternoon tea, but I look forward to it on my next visit.

This was our first 5 star hotel. It went over and beyong our expectations. The service was superior, the staff ... exemplary, the hotel itself beautiful, and the location perfect. As a teacher I would have to put a plus next to all items on the survey. Our son lives in San Diego and we defintely plan on staying at the Westgate again, when accomodations are needed. Wow!! A great experinece and at a price that was affordable. Shopping Mall was across the street, waterfront was a couple of blocks down the street and dinning and nightlife was on the same block, and even in the hotel. You could do a full enjoyable trip and never get in a car.

I decided to stay at this hotel again because i had such a pleasant and wonderful experience last time, but this time i was ... somewhat disappointed. When i asked the front desk clerk when checking in to get a view facing the horton plaza and the stadium, she practically brushed me off and told me i was stuck with the room they assigned me...now i've stayed at thousands of hotels by now and i know that's just not true especially when the hotel was practically half empty. I didn't like that. She could've at least checked to see if there were any arrangements that could've been made, but not even an effort to honor my request. Instead, we got a great view of the building next to us...yay. I honestly believed this hotel was better then the others not only because of the accomedations, but the staff...i guess i was wrong. Also, the room we were given had a messed up door. I think 4 out of 5 times i tried getting into my room after sight seeing, the door got jammed or the key couldn't be read. Given that they didn't even honor or consider my request for a different room because of the view, i'm sure they weren't going to do much because of the door. I just figured we were given the room that they couldn't book out to folks. I'm definitely going to stay at a different hotel next time i'm in the area.

We loved the weekend at the Westgate. Started out with a very impressive room service waiting for us - fruit and cheese ... plate with a bottle of wine - lovely. Great view in our upgraded, spacious room. We loved the turn down service, the quick room service, the non-intrusive but so accommodating staff. It was right across the street from the Spreckels where we were going to see a show. Lots of space in the bathroom for two, and the shower/toilet has a pocket door to close off for privacy if needed. The Internet wasn't wireless - but we weren't supposed to be working anyway!

Good location & best shower in California!
Joy Aug 3, 2008
The Westgate Hotel, while cold and "stuffy," is very well located for downtown San Diego activities (e.g., Gaslight, Petco ... Park, shopping). The room was spacious, comfortable and well laid out with lots of light. The staff was accommodating when I found a wedding reception laid out 8 floors beneath my window; I was given another room on the other side of the building with no questions asked. My room had the best shower I have ever experienced in a hotel (don't tell the water conservation corps!)--large, good water pressure, spotless frameless doors and great bath products. I would be pleased to go back to the Westgate.

Susan Jun 11, 2008
We've stayed at this hotel more than 3x and we love it. The West Gate feels like being in Europe and the staff is very ... friendly and helpful. The location is perfect as it is located very close to the main streets in the GasLamp, it's across the street from a main shopping mall, close to Harbor Drive, and is basically very accessible to mostly all locations of interest to visitors. The lightrail system is right there if you choose not to drive to get around.

Good, but not great
James Sep 2, 2007
The Westgate Hotel was aesthetically impressive. The reception area, halls, and dining areas reminded me a lot of my trips ... to Europe. However, actually getting to the hotel was somewhat confusing (I am not from San Diego), and their parking garage was full so we were told by their staff to park a block or so away in a city garage (when we checked in around 10:30 PM there was no valet parking). Our room, though less ornate reception area, was spacious and had a (very) modest balcony. Unfortunately the air conditioning in our room was broken and San Diego was in the middle of a heat wave, so it was pretty muggy. When we asked them to change rooms they said they were all full and brought us a box fan and two free breakfast vouchers. It was nice of them, but somehow I had expected more. My advice: go if you can get a discount, because a pretty reception hall isn't worth the money.

Excellent Hotel and Staff
Russell Aug 26, 2007
I was totally impressed that I was able to get such a high-quality hotel. The professionalism of the hotel staff equals that ... of any top-of-the-line hotel in the USA. Additionally, the bedroom was more than spacious and comfortable. Underground valet parking relieved the stress of finding a parking space. Located one block away is a three-floor mall which offers many places to eat and shop. Accessing major roads was easy. I didn't need to use my GPS system to navigate. I will be a return customer to this hotel.

Far from a 5 star
Suzy Aug 18, 2007
I have stayed in hotels rated 3 or 4 stars WAY BETTER than this one. The hallways had a bad odor of dirty carpet. Upon ... entering our room, there was a baby crib leftover from the previous occupants. The view from our room looked directly into the government building accross the street when we were told by the front desk it was one of their better rooms as far as views were. The bathroom was not very clean and was in desperated need of a makeover. The carpet and curtains had a bad odor and I would not stay there again.
