There was no notification of construction going on during our stay. Staff was top notch. Early morning work noise

W is for Wonderful!
This was my first stay at a W hotel. It was recommended by my daughter. I had read the online reviews prior to booking and noticed a comment about the sheets--sheets, really? Well, there IS something wonderful about the sheets. My husband and I slept like babies! The location (Gaslamp District) was great for us, had a great restaurant/brewery just around he corner. Other restaurants/shopping also within walking distance. Great stay in a great city!

ok but a few problems
The rooms were nice and modern, but the lobby and 2nd floor were under renovation. We had to ask the front desk for things twice on two separate occasions, which I have never had to do before at any other hotel. The 2nd time we even got a "I'll call you back" response from the front desk, and they never called back! There was also a problem with the bathroom...water sprays from the showerhead since there is no door to the shower. The entire bathroom floor was wet after a shower, even after trying to move the showerhead away from the shower opening. The door to the bathroom is also not sufficient in keeping out sound, since it is a sliding door. Anybody in the room could hear what's going on inside the bathroom, and they could even see through the side of the door if they wanted to. Pretty bad functional design. The staff are really nice and friendly though, but I think next time I would stay somewhere else.

Great comfort and atmosphere
I had a great time while in San Diego. It's a little out of the way, but just a few block walk will have you in the heart of San Diego. Great room, very modern and chic. Would stay here again!

Better than anticipated
Despite some negative reviews in a popular travel review site, the W was quite enjoyable and a pleasant surprise. Staff exceptionally friendly. One complaint: a lot of extras were charged for such as internet even in the business office. There was uncertainty about which amenities provided were free vs billable, an awkward feeling.

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
Breakfast two blocks away at the Emerald Cafe (on Broadway by the Westin) was very inexpensive and high quality. Also near by, the Karl Strauss Grill and Brewery was reasonable with great microbrews and food.

Great value
Super modern but not pretentious. Staff genuinely friendly nd professional. Beds are very comfortable and ammenities are modern and plentiful. What's with the carpet in the rooms though? It was super soiled. Do some wood flooring for aesthetics and cleanliness! Wi-fi isn't free - big negative!!

Fun hotel, great service
This was an excellent hotel, a lot of fun to stay at, beautiful interior design in rooms, lobby, and everywhere, and excellent service. Definitely not your run of the mill, sterile hotel. This one had some character, and all the staff were super-friendly, helpful and generous. Would stay here again. Highly recommended.
