Very good service and a small room

Clean hotel, tiny rooms, very good service! We booked an Orbitz special and stayed in a room with two double beds for US$90/night. The room had a safe (large enough for a 17" laptop), microwave, coffee maker and small refrigerator. The room rate did not include a free breakfast, so we walked three blocks south to a supermarket and filled the frig with breakfast goodies (a convenience store is one block west of the hotel, too). My wife's favorite coffee shop is located in the hotel, too. Yes, the room was tiny - about 170 square feet. But with the great weather who stays in the room anyway? The bedding was great and the A/C was cool and quiet. The walls were thin, though, and we could hear noises from the adjacent rooms. The towels were huge, fluffy and soft. I'm sure you've read the other reviews about the bathroom floor being soaked after each shower. Free internet/printers on three computers in the business center and free wireless in the lobby. The equipment in the 24-hr fitness center was in excellent shape, but we got our workouts by walking eight blocks to and from the Convention Center every day. On the way to the CC (or Petco Park, for that matter), you can walk down Fifth Street in the Gaslamp district to see many, many restaurants and nightspots. And the outdoor shopping mall across the street has many medium and upscale stores to choose from. We saw lots of homeless people as we walked but didn't really feel threatened. The hotel is just a couple of blocks from the mass transit system, so that made it easy to get to the outskirts of town. The transit system can actually take you close to the Mexican border if you want to walk into Mexico. All in all, we made out well by staying at the Sofia hotel.

Great location and stylish rooms

We love the modern and simple style of the rooms which gave it a boutique hotel feeling, for that money the hotel seemed like a great deal. The location is fantastic.

Sofia Hotel

Orbitz did not offer the included breakfast option. We waited until 3 p.m. for our room to be straightened up even though we put out the "Straighten Up" tag at 9:00 a.m. Hotel is VERY convenient to the S.D. Civic Theatre and a large shopping mall, however it is in a bad neighborhood, right next to the Greyhound Bus Station, with the attendant bums, panhandlers and lost tourists. Great bar! Excellent food in the Currant restaurant (a tad on the pricey side). We could have gotten a hotel with a view of the bay for less money. Bedroom and bath are smaller than in our house!

Bad way to end a honeymoon.

This is a very attractive hotel that is very very small. The elevators, lobby, showers and rooms are beyond NY city small, but it is lovely to look at-rich in decor and replica artifacts. However, when we arrived the rooms that we requested/pre paid for were not available and my sons were forced to share a room with one queen sized bed, which left one of them sleeping on the floor. Nothing was done to remedy the mistake and there wasn't an adjustment made to the fee that I already paid-one bed received and two beds purchased. There was additional confusion on the last day we stayed-they put even more exorbitant holds on my credit card "because I decided to stay another day," which I had pre paid with Orbitz as part of my original purchase-in total the holds equaled what I had already paid for the rooms. Over all the stay was exhausting and worrisome-what would each and every day bring in the way of charges and treatment. (The only exception was the valet staff-they were quick and courteous and we had no worries leaving the car with them)

Bad Service, Hotel is OK.

We stayed at The Sofia Hotel for our 1 year wedding anniversary. There was an overall feeling that we were bothering the hotel staff by staying there. They misplaced one of our bags, gave us the wrong room initially, and the Currant restaurant does not want to make orders to go even tho it is advertised to do so. The hotel also demands a $100 a day hold on your card for "incidentals". Very small tv's, no pool/spa, or room service offered.

Nice and quaint hotel

We had a very plesant stay at this relatively small but quant hotel. The location was great for getting to any of the attractions in San Diego either by bus, taxi or foot. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. This hotel was a good value.

Sightseeing tip: Not Applicable

Buses are a great and inexpensive way to get to attractions. Or if you want a guided tour the trolleys provide a lot of facts on the city and are pleasant but they are a bit expensive at $32 per adult.
