Good Location

We stayed overnight to attend the Holiday Bowl so the Sofia Hotel was perfectly located with the restaurants of the Gaslamp District, Seaport Village, and the trolley station all within a very short walk. Our double bed room was quite small (thank heavens there was a sliding door on the bathroom!) but the bed was comfy and the room very clean and quiet. Brian at the front desk was helpful with tips on riding the trolley. Our stay was definitely good value for the money.

Make use of the great San Diego trolley system to get around town. The station is just a 5-8 minute walk from the Sofia Hotel.

Love the Sofia Hotel

Have stayed here many times and have always really enjoyed my stay. The staff is fabulous. It's a 10 minute walk to the Convention Center. The rooms are a bit small, but are nicely furnished and very comfortable. The Gaslamp is a 5-10 minute walk, as are tons of great restaurants. Will stay here whenever I travel to San Diego.

Only if you are on a tight budget

I was disappointed: 1. No restaurant or even cafeteria to have breakfast. 2. Regular cleaning, the first day I found food and clothes from the previous guest in my room. 3. Old amenities... but the truth is that I has a very good price, so sometimes you get what you pay...

Good hotel, couple of glitches

My wife and I found that The Sofia was a perfect location to get all over the San Diego area. Also, the room was kept very clean and the staff responsive and engaging. Only two items stood out - at first there appeared to be a stale smell emanating from the drains, perhaps due to the building being older, however this smell did disappear. Also, one bedside light fixture and the provided alarm clock did not work correctly, although adequately enough.

If you stay in downtown San Diego, definitely go shopping at Seaport Village. It is a wonderful mix of shops and food.

Enjoyed it!

Staff is extremely friendly and helpful!! Room is very clean and tidy, and I like how the bottled water (2 per day) are complimentary! A lot of hotels would charge you if you have their bottled water. The location is excellent too, walking distance to pretty much everything, and it is also near some major trolley stations! The only down side of it is not many amenities available in the hotel (such as pool), but considering the price and the size of the hotel, it wouldnt affect my stay decision too much :). Another thing is maybe can improve on the sound proof system, since i could hear guests watching TV the next door lol. Overall speaking, I had a great experience in the Sofia!

Only OK

It was only ok, from the check in, to the room, to cleanliness. The best part was the location, it was in walking distance to almost everything and the CTA stop was right across the street. Brian at the front desk was the best part of the hotel. Super friendly and informative about anything in the city.

Good value

The staff were extremely helpful and responsive. The room was small and fairly quiet, even though I was over a bus route. The ventilation system is a little noisy. I used their yoga room and found the yoga exercises very beneficial. It was a good location, with the Gaslamp district, Little Italy and convention center/Embarcadero an easy 10 to 15 minute walk. You have to step around the homeless almost everywhere, unfortunately, but it was not an unsafe neighborhood.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Athens Market Taverna has wonderful Greek food. Taka Sushi is amazing, and the Cafe Sevilla has good tapas and fun bar scene. For high-end Italian food, Bice is excellent.
