Great hotel

This was a fantastic hotel! The location is just steps away from countless resturants, shopping and great nightlife. The service was top notch down to the helpful valet guys. Although it was overcast, the pool area will probably be a happening spot in the summer & I will certainly keep it in mind when it gets warmer.

Great, convenient location

Hotel Solamar is in a perfect location, situated right in the Gaslamp district, and within easy walking distance to many excellent restaurants/clubs (even in heels). The service was great - every single hotel employee we encountered, from the valets to the desk clerks, was helpful and friendly. The one thing that could be improved on is the sound-proofing in the rooms. We didn't expect to have to listen to other guests yelling and slamming doors after 3am on a Monday morning - made it difficult to get sleep before we had to catch our flight out at 9.

Nobu's a couple blocks down the street. If you can, grab a seat at the sushi bar and be nice to the sushi chefs - they're awesome.

Striking, contemporary, great location

I was staying at a more traditional hotel on the water front. Something a little funky and in the mix is what I wanted and Hotel Solamar was a great choice in the Gaslight District. Just a couple of blocks from great eateries, and an active downtown. But far enough so the nightlife did not disturb when I was ready to sleep. Rooftop bar was too cool. I highly recommend.

Solid Hotel

Great location in the Gaslamp section of town. If you park a hybrid car and use the valet, the daily parking rate is 50% off. Very solid rooms and very clean. WiFi is free and the signal was very good. Every morning you can receive the NY Times or the WSJ. The coffee in the lobby is excellent and every 5PM there was a wine cocktail hour. The pool is puny and the sundeck is loud and cramped. The fitness room is no bigger than a walk in closet. A solid choice in hotels.

Dining tip: Not Applicable

Seafood: Oceanaire; BBQ Phil's; Mexican La Puerta or Cafe Coyote in Old Town; California Cuisine: George's Terrace in La Jolla or Poseidon in Del Mar. Breakfast: Broken Yolk across from the hotel.

Great for couples!!

My husband and I stayed here for six days/nights for our honeymoon. We must admit, when we walked into the room we were VERY pleased!! The place was spotless and very spacious!! We had a king deluxe room with a jacuzzi tub, so we cannot say what the other rooms were like but ours was awesome. The hotel also offers a free wine hour for guests from 5-6pm every evening which is a definite perk and made my husband become a wine drinker! I was told by a hotel staff member that they switch the brands/types of wines monthly..which is pretty cool. Everyone at the hotel was very friendly and helpful....it doesn't get much better than this!

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

There are plenty of places within the Gaslamp district that offer happy hours and great breakfasts (The Broken Yolk) that are a lot less costly than eating at the hotel. Gaslamp Strip Club is an amazing place to go for a nice steak dinner!

Best location in town

It was easy to enjoy the entire San Diego area with the Solamar as a home base. The hotel staff was very helpful and dining at JSIx was a great experience. The pool is small but adequate and the rooftop bar is a SanDiego hotspot.

the good and the bad

The staff was friendly but not over friendly. The housekeepers were very friendly and greeted you. The rooms were very small but clean. The bed slept good. The showerhead was wonderful. The only thing that was available was coffee and water, when you went downstairs. There was nothing available for non-coffee drinkers. It seem more for business travelers than people on vacation. No readily information was available for example: how to get around the city or the highlights of the city. There was no phone books available because they went "green". They could look the number up for you and connect you. The only problem was you could not do any searching for yourself. We could not enjoy the pool after a long day of sightseeing. We felt like it was not a family like atmosphere. We do realize that it was located in the nightlife zone.

The Broken Yolk was wonderful. Great service, great food, and did not have to wait long to receive your food. If you want to take a cab because the walk is long try Hob Nob Hill. The food is excellent and the service is wonderful.

Urban Oasis

California Dreaming in San Diego. We stayed in the Hotel Solimar within the Gas Light district of town. Our stay centered upon potential University candidates for our college bound high school senior. Hotel Solimar was impecable, friendly and casual with a refined edge for urban art decor. The beds are very comfortable, pillows clean and downy and the room details most thoughtful. Small touches like a mirror floating off the wall with soft back lighting renders a fun and surprising presentation. A very nice find!

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

You really don't need a car when you stay here. Everything is so close and the 30$ parking fee makes having a car a waste. You are better off walking to most things or taking a short cab or bicycle-cab ride to your destination.
