Great trip.
One person behind the desk, eight people waiting to check in, not a good start. The A/C in the room did not work or the thermostat was set to high. The room was clean and the help was excellent. If you opened the door to go out on the patio, you see and hear take off and land.

A nice place to stay
As we got to our hotel, it was pretty rough. [...]From there on the stay was wonderful. My son enjoyed the swimming pool, especially when they played a night movie around the pool area. We didnt really do much at the hotel, since we were more out-n-about,enjoying everything San Diego had to offer. We did have a lovely time walking around the harbor and watching all the sail boats.

Nice Amenities, Family Friendly
This was a quick family visit and we were able to do most of our visiting and entertaining at the Hotel itself. This meant happy waterlogged kid and simple parking and transportation for elderly familiy members. Excellent wait staff at both hotel restaurants also made the visit quite easy and smooth.

Read up on SD before you arrive. I grew up here and it is the kind of town that can be fantastic or terrible depending on how much you know going in...this is especially true of the more well known tourist destinations (most of which are incredibly expensive and over rated).

Great for price
Good overall experience and great location. Pictures make it look a little newer/nicer than it really is but the hotel is still very nice. Has 3 pools and 2 jacuzzis and is surrounded by ocean. Expensive dining / room service / mini bar fees sort of make up for the lower price but it is also easy to avoid these costs.

Nightlife tip:
Short drive from hotel
Taxi about 12-15 dollars to Gaslamp. Wouldn't suggest trying to walk there. It is nice to walk up and down the island during the day though.

Sheraton brand seems to be declining
Biggest problem: not enough staff. Long lines for one clerk at the front desk, one person performed all duties in the restaurant. Bathroom was terrible: virtually no counter space; no fan; shower control was falling off; no towel rack; electrical outlets non-functional. Yes, the location was beautiful on Harbor Island and the staff were uniformly courteous and helpful, considering their abysmal working conditions. But this was Sheraton, once a major brand. At least from our experience, it isn't any more.
