Great Family Hotel

This was a great hotel for a family with 2 little ones sightseeing in San Diego. The room layout (bedroom and living/kitchen space) worked perfectly for nap time. Breakfast was filling and there's even a complimentary cocktail hour! Only complaint would be that the beds were too firm. Don't forget to take into consideration the $13 parking fee per day. Pretty standard in San Diego though. Overall great value.

Perfect with a few caveats

The staff was outstanding. They were the ultimate in customer service and personality from the front desk, to the maintenance people, to the food service people, all top of the line. Food was very good , and they kept working at keeping it full. Only caveat there was noise and crowds, not a fault of the staff, just so many people in the food area. Outstanding hotel and I recommend to everyone.

Great family suites

+ we enjoyed the large family suite with separate bedroom for the children + lots of room + friendly staff + close to San Diego Sea World - all plastic dishes for breakfast, lots of trash & no recycling

Paper thin walls ... and it just gets worse ....

We usually stay at Embassy Suites but thought we'd try out Residence Inn while in San Diego. The price was about the same yet we'll never stay here again. Why? First, if you have kids, go somewhere else. The walls are paper thin and we could hear the people in the next room every night loud and clear (if you get my meaning). Okay, it's better than hearing people fight, but they weren't really that loud, the walls are just that darn thin. I could even hear them talking. Makes me wonder what they heard from our room. @_@ Though we were only on the 4th floor, we had to take two separate elevators to get to the 1st floor and had a heck of a time finding the breakfast area. There were no maps, no directions, no paper in the room stating where to go, nothing. The bedroom was small, packed with two queen sized beds, one puny nightstand, and a dresser and TV. There was barely any room to walk around. The living room and kitchen area were roomy and nice though. The free wi-fi they brag about isn't wireless in the rooms, only in the lobby. You have to use an ethernet cable in your room and it's really, really, really slow the longer you use it. The first five minutes is fine but then it just got so slow I gave up. Since I work online it was very frustrating. The housekeeper forgot to leave towels and I didn't notice until I got out of the shower and had to dry off with a hand towel. Ugh...I could go on. Yes, we've been to far worse places but for the price we paid we expected better. Embassy Suites has been the best, as well as Hampton Inn. There are places that are far cheaper than these yet still offer much better accommodations than Residence Inn. (La Quinta is a good example) Maybe it was just this particular Residence Inn and not all are like this...but I know we won't be going back here next time we're in San Diego!

Residence Inn Mission Valley

Overall, we had a nice stay and I would stay here again. A couple irritations - when they did the room cleaning, they clearly didn't check/clean the shower; there was no dish soap (for hand washing dishes); the bed was crazy hard (my husband who likes a hard bed thought it was too hard); there's no elevator to the 1st floor, which is the lobby/dining/pool area, you have to go to the 2nd floor then take the stairs or go outside to the parking lot then down to a 1st floor door to get there; and the parking fee of $13/day is frustrating when there isn't an option to park anywhere else. The buffet breakfast was fine, the eggs were the kind that seemed premixed and watery, but that's expected at a buffet breakfast. The staff was attentive, we had an issue our first night with ridiculously loud people above us and the staff moved us to the top floor in a quieter part of the hotel. I think the floors/ceilings aren't well inslulated or something; we could hear everything, including them turning on the faucet. It's nice that the hotel is set off the road a bit. Some of the other hotels along Hotel Circle are right on the road which is a frontage to the freeway, so I imagine there could be a lot of road noise. But that wasn't an issue here.

Needs a little tlc

Our room was in pretty good shape but the airconditioner was loud and blew directly on the beds. That meant we were cold when it was on and hot when it shut off. The alarm clock in the room went off at 5AM and even unplugging the clock would not stop the alarm from repeating every five minutes or so. The room was clean and nice and breakfast was plentiful with lots of choices.
