Tough Times Downtown San Diego
The location was great, and the restaurant in the lobby was excellent and ful of friendly travelers in town to see teh Football Bowl game. However, the Customer Service was worse than you can fathom from a 3-star hotel. I called in advance to let them know I would arrive early. I needed to continue working through the day. They would not allow me to check in or use a room until 3 pm, based on policy. Their "business center" was a desk in the middle of the second floor hallway. No privacy for phone conversations. The "Free" Internet NEVER worked, despite 3 attempts to get help from the front office and from their "engineer". The room was small and uncomfortable, BUT the Best was super compfortable, and so were the pillows. Overall, the value and experience was less then desired for a $130 room. I give this a thumbs down.

Great location and friendly staff
The location was perfect, within walking distance of all the restaurants and bars within Gaslamp Quarter. Parking was a good deal at $20 a day with valet service. The hotel also offers complimentary gym passes for a very nice gym just a few blocks away. Overall our stay was excellent! Be sure to check out the roof terrace, great views of the city.

Noisy and cramped
We chose it because of its convenient downtown location. Antique elevator may be 'cute' but dangerous in its vicious slamming of grille doors, slow and unreliable. Very helpful and service orientated staff. Room cramped, stuffy and bed small for two people. Adjacent Brian's restaurant will not accept hotel discount vouchers on most items and only once can discount be used. However lots of better alternatives all around. Valet parking expensive. We walked a lot and used public transport. Noisy area, no quiet rooms. Visit rooftop for breathtaking views. Next time we'll choose a better value for money hotel nearby.

Spacious....NOT!
We were a bit disappointed....the room did not resemble the pictures on this site. Our room was very small....thankfully, we didn't spend much time there. No ocean view either. After reading other reviews, we requested a room with a whirlpool tub....the guy at the desk asked what the difference was between a whirlpool tub and a regular tub. We were told the hotel didn't have whirlpool tubs. The location is a big plus.....walk to restaurants, bars, and shops in the gaslamp quarter. Brian's 24 is awesome and the valet parking is a deal! Just be sure to request your vehicle 10 min before you plan to leave.

Okay...
I'm a 19 year old traveler- therefore, I am cheap and don't need much. However, I payed 150 a night for garbage!!! This place sucked. (I know I'm killing the teenage lingo) but I have stayed in better motel 6's. There was only three things redeeming about this hotel and it was the staff, location, and shower.

Old Gem right by all the action!
Positives: -The location was WONDERFUL. Literally 1 block from the Gaslamp Quarter... 2 blocks from Horton Plaza... - SO many places to eat and dine and hang out at - even the hotel's restaurant was great! - STAFF were awesome. So friendly, so accomodating - even offered great suggestions on where to head out. - Rooms were nicely furnished even though the building was old (was former St. James Hotel) - Rooftop deck had amazing views, 360 degrees indeed. -Free wi/fi. -Checkin was quick and easy. - Cheapest hotel I could get within 1 wk of the stay. The location more than made up for all the negatives I listed below.... but should be addressed anyway. Negatives: - no cheap parking. Valet $20! But had in and out privileges for the duration of that day. - OLD elevators/lifts. The doors were heavy. was awkward to get in and out of the lift with the luggage. - The bathroom could have been cleaned better - mold at top of shower stall with cobwebs. - Walls are paper thin - I heard my friend in the other room whenever he coughed or was taking a phone call. - Building is old. The configuration of the rooms was awkward but it was fine. It's just not what I expected for $200/night. - No pool on rooftop deck; had to walk up/down steep stairwell to get to/from the deck. We didn't stay much in the hotel so it was fine for what it was - but for $200+ a night, it should be a little more inclusive of things that I had to pay extra for... especially parking.

Great service, value, location
Worth noting: Rooms are small, and hotel is old (old-timey and slow elevator with heavy door), but all staff were helpful. Room was still reasonably updated for the small space: WiFi, wall-mount flat-screen TV, coffeemaker, soft sheets. Convenient airport shuttle & good room-service breakfast from in-hotel restaurant. Many great downtown & harbor/convention locations are walkable, and bus stop for zoo is maybe 3-4 block walk. Many restaurants nearby, and major comedy club with good food is on the same block. Parking in area is costly, and SD is spread out enough that ocean beaches are an expensive cab ride away, but the location can make for an affordable convention trip with nearby dining, shopping, etc.

met expectations
was looking for a hotel within walking distance to gaslamp bars and at a reasonable price. paid more than i would have liked but no more than other hotels in the area. the elevators are cool - the old push gate style, but remember this is an OLD hotel -- you're not going to get a huge room with modern accommodations. overall was satisfied, though i wasn't expecting much. pros: they had security and required keycard access at night, valet parking was only $20 (TIP: call ahead before checking out or you'll have to wait 15-20 mins for your car)

Convention Stay
Amenities aren't anything special. Location is great for walking to the convention center and/or dining at night. However, location also makes sleeping at night very difficult, as it is a very "happening" section of town. Although we were on the 8th floor and in between buildings (i.e. not facing the street), the noise levels Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights were enough to make sleep incredibly difficult and not very good quality.
