Affordable place in good location

Cannot complain about this stay. The location of the hotel is great and offers good value for the money. The historic elevators' doors are too strong to operate easily especially with luggage, I think they could do something about that and still keep them historic. Wireless was very bad at times.

Nice, but average

I stayed here after flying from the East Coast, and before going down into Baja. It was a fairly convenient stay, with van from the airport and a couple-minutes walk to the trolley for the trip south. Not outstanding, but definitely not painful, either. For a partier, the Gaslamp District setting would be primo, but for me merely interesting.

OK

I was in SD for a convention, so the hotel was in a good location. The service was fine, but the room was way below expectations.

Stay someplace else!

Do not stay at this hotel! It’s not the worst hotel I’ve ever been to, but it is extremely outdated and incompetent. I should mention that this was not a cheap hotel. It was over $185 a night for an extremely old hotel and room. Don’t let the name fool you, the Ramada Gaslamp Convention Center. The last convention held there would have been the Royal Order of Water Buffalos with Fred Flintstone and the Grand Pooba. Considering the prime location, I suspect the vast majority of old hotels still standing have been transformed themselves into boutique accommodations. In other words, to compensate for the small rooms they make great updates and provide exceptional service. The Ramada is quite the opposite. The elevator is from 1913, literally over 100 years old. It has two doors. One you have to manually pull open, and the second a second cage that you roll open. Both doors are super hard to open and close immediately. Thus it’s really hard to get your luggage in while the doors are slamming shut on you. One night I was stuck in this elevator for an hour and 15 minutes. I called the front desk, and she said she would send someone to get me. 45 minutes later I called again, and she said someone was working on it. 30 minutes later, I called a third time and she tried telling me the elevators were working. I asked how that could that be possible when I had been sitting on the floor for 75 minutes? I threatened to call 911. Finally some maintenance guy went to “reset” the elevator and low and behold, it finally worked and brought me to the lobby. I went to express my distress to the front desk. The woman told me that the guests told her the elevator was working. In other words, she relied on the report of guests instead of automatically sending the maintenance guy to check on me. With the alarm ringing off and on for over an hour and three phone calls from me, she was oblivious to the fact that I was indeed stuck in the elevator. When I checked in, I asked how long it takes to get a car out from the valet and was told 10 minutes. So as I prepared to go to a concert, I called for my car 15 minutes ahead of when I needed to leave. Well it took them another half hour to get my car, causing me to entirely miss the warm-up band. While I waited in the lobby they apologized telling me they were sorry, but they were just really busy. The hotel was really full, since the Rolling Stones were playing the following night. They knew well in advance that the hotel was going to have full capacity for the weekend. Any competent management would have had adequate staff to manage the hotel’s functions. On my last night there, I went to bed at 11pm so I could get up for my morning flight. The people next door were talking loud, and the walls are paper-thin. They woke me up three times, when I finally called the desk to complain at 3:45am. When you check in they make you initial a list of undesirable characteristics, acknowledging those things. One of them is that the hotel is in the entertainment district and quite noisy day and night. The outside street noise was not as annoying as listening to the people in the room next door. I could literally make out their conversations. In an updated hotel, this would not be an issue. Everyone at the desk was really friendly. However, they couldn’t do much when they are short staffed. Additionally, a few of them are not competent enough to complete their job tasks. I suggest you stay away.

Cheap and nasty

if you think this might be a good deal- think again, it isn't. Awful decor, stuffy rooms, grumpy staff. Wifi will not work in the rooms. Outside noise is amplified down the hall ways, elevator doors slam all night long. If you just want a room to hang your bags go for it, if you plan on sleeping ever go elsewhere

Small room but a good value

It was a small room and an old place but it was very clean and everything worked well. If all you need is a shower and a bed it was a great value. Much cheaper than most all the other hotels in the immediate area.
