Gaslamp Bar Hopping

This hotel surpassed my expectations. It was one of the cheapest in the Gaslamp Quarter District so I booked here based on the convenient location to the bars. If you're looking for a peaceful quiet getaway, you shouldn't book in this area since the street noise can be loud and last very late on weekends. The hotel was very friendly and knew a lot about the bars and clubs in the area. The $20 valet service was worth it since there are ins and outs 24/7. Valet was quick to bring around your car when you called the desk. The hotel elevator were very old fashioned but it fit the overall feel of the hotel. Very retro and comfy. The rooms were very kept clean. We booked two queen beds and it was a happy surprise when it wasn't your average two queens together in one room. The beds are separated by a wall and locking doors that offer extra privacy. It was great for changing and both queen beds had their own rooms AND had their own TV! The restaurant located attached to the hotel is opened 24 hours which is very convenient when you are bar hopping til the early morning! :) I will definitely be staying here again soon!

Historic can mean many things...

The hotel itself is interesting. Nearly 100 years old right in the center of the Gas Lamp area. The streets hum with activity throughout the night. This hum will permeate the thin walls of the tiny rooms. That being said, I slept through the night. The staff were cool and polite. The grand feature of this hotel may be the two pre war elevators that feature the vintage metal gates. I found them charming. There really is no parking! And San Diego is aggressive in their parking enforcement. There is a pay lot next door that is shady and they provide a valet service for $20.00. I was there for business and used both services. The shady parking lot is packed with twenty somethings preparing to party and the ticketing device rarely work. Stick to the valet or better yet, don't take a car. You can walk or train most nearby destinations. Note, the convention center is more than a mile away. There are many closer hotels with parking and less character. Not the best hotel for business or family travel. Perhaps suitable for younger travelers that want to safely enjoy the nightlife of the San Diego's Gas Lamp and stay in a cool old hotel with some soul.

Cheap hotel for a cheap price

This hotel was more affordable than others I was looking at and you get what you pay for. The building is pretty outdated and the elevators are quite old and very slow. The room wasn't amazing, but it sufficed. The nice part about this hotel is that it's located right downtown and you can walk just about anywhere. They also had a nice rooftop deck that you can get some really great views of the city from. They also had free wifi. Overall, an affordable hotel that served its purpose. I would return, but would probably look at other hotels first.

The bus that goes to the zoo is just a block away from the hotel, so it's very easy to take public transit to get there, saving you the cost of a cab.

Bed bugs and horrible management

Two words: bed bugs. But that's not the worst part. The management was not just unhelpful but absolutely rude. Despite the fact that I gave the manager an actual bed bug that I found in the room, he insisted that I didn't get the bites I showed him in his hotel. But he offered to move me into a different room if I was willing to let his staff clean all of my personal belongings. Funny request considering he claimed my bites weren't from bed bugs!

Great overall stay experience

This is the second time I have stayed at the Ramada Inn Gaslap District hotel and have had a positive experience both times. Would recommend this place to anyone staying a few nights in SD. Hotel originally built in 1913 and still had nostalgic feeling but at the same time has modern amenities. Brian's 24 is a 24 hour restaurant / bar connected to the hotel for a convient place to stop at before your day in SD. Ignore those reviews that complain the shower is too small -- This hotel was built in 1913! What do you expect. Great stay especially if you enjoy the old feeling of a hotel stay from almost 100 years ago while having modern comfort.

Poor event planning by the Hotel.

Big event outside the hotel for St Pat's day. Had to call the hotel to find out how/where to park. Was told to meet the valet at 5th and E St. No cart or any other help to get luggage to the Hotel. Had to carry our bags down the street and through the crowds... Desk staff was not helpful or friendly- seemed uninterested in being there. Elevator would be impossible for my petite wife to operate.

What a nightmare!

Booked this room due to location of St. Pat's events. Could not park near or use valet; room was small, humid and dirty. Walls are paper thin. Elevators rickety and not always functional. Staff seemed amused that I was soaking wet at check-in and that I had purchased tickets for the event that was going on outside, when staying there would have been provided. Would not recommend.

Perfect Location, but not a great place to stay.

VERY thin walls. It was hard to get any sleep with all the noise coming from outside & in the hallway. Someone was arrested for fighting and it sounded like they were in the room with us. We were afraid to open the door and don't even know where all the noise was coming from, but we could hear every word. Very poor lighting, the room was dark and not very inviting at all. Too bad because it's in a great location and could be a good travel location.

Staff not friendly

We go to San Diego ALL THE TIME for vacations or the weekend. My husband and two boys stayed in this Hotel last night. The room was ok but the bathroom sort of grossed me out...just not sanitary looking. The window from the bathroom was dirty the sink by the bed was clogging. But we really didn't spend much time in it so we can't complain. the staff however, was rude and had NO PERSONALITY..they made me feel like a weirdo. My husban and I joke and talk and they had so smile and the look on their faces just let me know they were not happy people. The restaurant employees were very nice though. Huge menu ..but our busicuits and gravy had onions on them (ewww) and the buscuits were hard!! Myy pancakes were great though. Overall we loved the oldness of the hotel and appreciated it's history...and also loved the rooftop terrace! But will choose another hotel for sure next time!!

Great Value

After reading some of the other reviews, I was a little bit worried that my trip might not be the best. However, I found out the the negative reviews must have been written by WHINERS. This hotel was great, especially for the price. Yes the rooms are on the small side, but the location, character, and other amenities more than make up for it. Plus, the 24 hour restaurant next to the lobby was great at 5 in the morning. This hotel was perfect for my trip.
