I liked the location.. That's about it! The room had a musky smell to it that slapped you in the face when you entered. They ... were outdated and needed a renovation badly. That must be why they collect a $25 per day parking fee for an empty lot. I should of booked the car at the motel 6 down the street and saved a few bucks. Not to mention an extra fee ($12/day) for using the workout facilities. If comparing this hotel to another don't forget to add $25 per night for your car.

Hotel was in a great location! Resort is situated between Downtown Gaslamp Quarters and La Jolla. Driving to La Jolla took ... about 10 minutes using surface streets and about 10 minutes to Gaslamp Quarters. The resort is very well maintained and clean. Front desk staff seems very friendly upon arrival. I suggests not eating on the property. The food was not that great at all and costs an arm and a leg. Parking on the property was $25/car/day. Yes you get to park near your room but that's just too much. Overall, I would visit again for a little bit of R&R.

Newly Weds Oct 3, 2009
Paradise Pointe has an awesome location and great views! The only downers about the resort is that during the week there is ... loud maintenance. We woke up to a loud edger right outside our door early one morning and a loud maintenance truck outside our door another morning. The bed wasn't very comfortable either. The rooms don't exactly have a modern feel to them and seem a little dated. However, the service was incredible. We ate at the Barefoot Cafe and the Baleen and were always very happy with the service. Concierge was very helpful as well.

HIDDEN FEES, NOT FAIR
JERRY AND DEBBIE Sep 24, 2009
WE ARE EXPERIENCED TRAVELERS AND HAVE TRAVELLED TO ASIA, EUROPE, AND SOUTH AMERICA. OUR COMMENTS ARE THUS: THE RESORT WAS ILL ... SMELLING AND FOUL UPON ENTRY TO THE ROOM. WE THOUGHT SOMEONE HAD DIED IN THE ROOM AND THE DECAYING BODY WHISKED AWAY MINUTES BEFORE WE ARRIVED. HOUSEKEEPING WAS NOT UP TO PAR. FLOORS WERE NOT MOPPED. CONCIERGE SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT BUT THE RESTAURANTS BAREFOOT AND BALEEN CUISINE WE DECIDED WAS JUST FAIR AND DID NOT RATE THE PRICES. BUT THERE WERE HIDDEN FEES AT TIME OF CHECKOUT. $75.00 FOR PARKING THAT NEITHER ORBITZ NOR THE RESORT HAD ADVISED US OF. WE COULD AFFORD IT FORTUNATELY, BUT HOW ABOUT THE YOUNG FAMILIES ON A TIGHT BUDGET IN THESE ECONOMIC TIMES? WE FELT CHEATED AND USED. AND ORBITZ, WE WOULD LIKE A REFUND OF OUR $75.00 SINCE THIS WAS NOT INCLUDED IN YOUR QUOTE. WE ARE PLANNING A TRIP TO SPAIN NEXT SUMMER, BUT WE ARE SERIOUSLY RETHINKING USING ORBITZ, EVEN FOR SMALL GET AWAY TRIPS LIKE THIS PAST ONE TO SAN DIEGO CA. YOU GUYS REALLY LET US DOWN.

The best, the worst, and wish list
VJMed12 Sep 24, 2009
My wife & I took this trip to celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary. As part of our reservation I asked that a tray of ... chocolate covered strawberries & some chilled wine be waiting in our room upon our arrival, but the surprise didn't happen as they were not in our room when we arrived. We found that the bathtubs were way too small for a romantic get away, and that the bungalow we were given did not have the sandy beach as described in the website. Instead we had large, jagged rocks along our side of the bay. Also, we purchased the s'more kit, but we did not have a fire pit in front of our room (as a result of the rocks)so we had to access the pit closest to our area which was in the darkest part of the park and the closest sitting area was a concrete picnic table which was way too far from the fire pit, so we had to stand up the entire time. We were a bit concerned because there were a couple of cars parked in the parking lot adjacent to this dark area of the park & a car alarm went off -not sure if someone was breaking into a car or what. We eventually chose to put out the fire because the experience ended up being too uncomfortable for us. We learned that the beach is actually a public beach so there were alot of locals accessing the pits around the sandy areas of the bay, many of which consisted of large, rowdy parties. In addition, during the day & up until early evening, there were boat races (special event) taking place in the area which made the location way too noisy for those wishing to have some peace & quiet. We ordered room service twice, but the food arrived cold, and missing breakfast condiments. The pizza was overpowered with garlic as was the spinach dip. The small kitchenette did not have a coffee pot nor any cups, glasses, plates or utinsels for our use so we had to purchase plastic ware for breakfast & snacks for the remainder of our stay. Everything that would have made the experience better was available-- for purchase (bathrobes, blankets, snacks, water etc.)& not at a reasonable price! It's cold in the evenings so the hotel should invest in some throw blankets for each room as well as some folding lawn furniture that can be moved closer to the pits so that guests can sit outside in the evenings & enjoy both the view & the evening. I purchased a balenese couple's massage & some alone time in the spa jacuzzi for us which was a nice experience. We were served champagne during our time in the jacuzzi & for those who are more daring, clothing was optional. I also arranged to have our bed turn down for the evening on the day of our massage which consisted of bath items from spa being placed on our bed (massage oil, a CD of the music which played in the spa's relaxation room, and a fizz bath ball, along with a live hibiscus flower). A nice touch, except the linens were supposed to have been lightly scented as part of the purchase, but they weren't. All of the rooms provide the same toiletries used by the jacuzzi which was also a nice plus. Although we received maid service during our stay we found that the carpet left our feet dark black when we walked around barefoot so I'm not sure how clean the room was. We usually travel to the Mexican carribean for our anniversaries, but this time, due to weather conditions, we opted to stay in the united states. Perhaps next time, we will consider going to the Mexican Carribean again.

The Baleen Restaurant on site was wonderful. It's a bit pricey, but our meal was delectable, the wine list stupendous, and the view amazing. Our servers were friendly and the restaurant took care of our dessert after learning that we were celebrating our anniversary. Very much worth the price & great for those special celebrations. We also went to Old Town & had authentic Mexican food & margaritas there. Best to rent a car as Old Town is about 10 minutes away.

Beautiful tropical getaway
rockingrandma Sep 14, 2009
with 2 ll year old girls there was plenty to keep them busy from a spa day to renting kayaks and paddle boats and bikes and ... miniture golf. The grounds are beautiful and the rooms were nice. The Baleen restaurant was excellent as was the Barefoot Bar and Grill. We would certainly return again. The only down side is that the property is so big that it is a little hard to get around depending on where the room is located. Wish they had bikes or carts to make getting around the property a little easier. A couple of times we did flag down one of the resort staff in the golf carts(we were lost one evening and couldn't find our way back to the room) and they were nice enough to get us to our destination. Plus a little more lighting would help at night. With all the plants and trees and shrubs walking in the dark back to the room made us a little uneasy. But those were minor compared to the great time we had.
Traveler type: Family
Luckily the dining area was a short walk from our room, both Baleen and Barefoot Bar and Grill had excellent food. Both have great views from the patio area. Baleen is very upscale and the food is very fresh and well prepared. Barefoot bar has good food in a casual atmosphere, the only criticism is the slowness of service during breakfast. Don't be in a hurry if you go there in the morning.

Go to Paradise if you want to Camp Out
RSM Traveller Sep 9, 2009
Admittedly, I saw this property on TLC's Jon & Kate. Given Kate's penchant for clean, I had high expectations. The ... overpowering amonia smell as we entered the lobby to register was our first clue that something was off. The first room we were showed had a bathroom that had been updated but it was dirty and the decor - which they call distressed - looked like it came from Walton's mountain. The entertainment cabinet (no flat screen tv just an old 36" thing) had no doors just the hooks for them, the walls are painted an alarming yellow and hand prints/scuff marks/food products are everywhere. The room was located directly in front of the primary pool which made it noisy and lots of foot traffic passing by the plate glass sliding door. The second room was bigger, in a better location for privacy but it was grossly neglected. There was a stray cat nested next to the concrete slab/front entrance. We wore socks around to keep our feet off the floor and put a towel in the bathtub when taking a shower just so we did not come into contact with what was a deeply stained tub. If you are used to coffee makers in the room as we are at this point ... no such amenity in Paradise! You have to schlep to an outdoor pavillion and cart it back to your room. The black on our socks after just one day convinced us we couldn't stay there. Even my 10 year old son said he was uncomfortable. It was the daddy longleg that we found on the bathroom curtain though that had us run out of there at 8 am the next day. This resort is tired and unkept. The Room Mgr (very politely) said, "We are an outdoor facility. You should expect bugs in the room". I was shocked! I don't want to camp out! The resort is going to undergo a room renovation but the housekeeping and grounds staff will be the same people. So I suspect it will remain largely unkept. We were offered a discount should we decide to return. No thanks. We found paradise up the road.

Arrived at hotel and only one specialist was at reservation desk who was on phone entire time and was given no indication of ... amenities. Said I received 'upgraded room' but I had to move since the window was not covered at night (even after they came and unscrewed lightbulb was quite bright with window uncovered)-- and the location was on a lagoon with no fence and I had twin toddlers. Also, there was no drain in bathtub so could not give kids a bath, and had to have someone come and fix TV which took over an hour.-- Second room was much better, but a bit dirty, no glasses in bathroom--just little doilies, and had to have a new remote delivered for tv. location was very close to sea world-- but don't understand why they did not provide a shuttle-- especially since they charged $25 per night for parking. Restaurant was nice.

My family enjoyed the resort. We had a newer lanai room (278) which was spacious and clean. Housekeeping kept returning ... even with Privacy sign. The grounds were beautiful!! Very quiet and tranquil setting, didn't feel crowded or "hotel" like. Kids loved feeding the ducks. Lots of "extras" - should have coffeemaker/microwave in room, parking too $$. Escape from the busy boardwalk beach scene. Would return again.
