Ocean Beach is a cozy little beach with a small town feel. It's the kind of place where people greet one another as they cross paths. Surfers enjoy the waves created by the jetties while swimmers and sunbathers will be pleasantly surprised by the friendly, familiar atmosphere on the beach. The water is divided into surfing and swimming and boogie board zones. Family-friendly, well-patrolled by lifeguards and home to sunbathing, surfing, fishing, sailing, shopping, pier strolling and lots of fun. Snuggled between residential neighborhoods, the Ocean Beach Hotel is near the south end of the beach, adjacent to numerous restaurants, surf shops, the Pier and other commercial establishments, mostly along Newport Avenue and Abbott Street.

My Little Secret

I hesitate to weigh in with a positive review because I don't want this place to get too popular or change in any way. I've stayed in this hotel a few times, the last time in an end room, which is worth the extra few $$. My husband and I had one of the end rooms and our traveling buddies (another couple) had the room above us. The sunsets were lovely, the rooms quaint, and the nightlife seamless. BE AWARE that this area is more of a party than a family-type destination. If you want a family trip, pick a hotel on Mission Bay. Fun bars, restaurants and local shops start within 50 feet of the hotel, and the beach is literally right across the street (and it's not a terribly busy one). Don't expect the Ritz. Expect "beachy" and convenient. Truly, you park your car at the hotel and walk all weekend.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Walk to Hodad's a block away (on Newport) for an AMAZING burger. They were featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives recently, which upped the waiting time but it's well worth it. And I'm not a burger person.

a fun stay in ocean beach

it's on a busy street that caters to partiers and beachgoers, but that's what i expected. bring your earplugs, for the late night revelers, and your camera for the daytime wandering. there are many restaurants nearby, and coffee spots for the morning walk. i enjoyed the pier, the surfers, nice tv's, the beautiful woody, the breeze, and the staff was most pleasant and helpful. love the owners, they were working on the courtyard and plantings...i'll be back!

Near Bars

Be warned this is near a few late bars if you want to get to sleep early on a weekend you may have some background noise but not way too crazy. Not to fancy hotel but it is acceptable.

Ocean Beach Hotel

Very negative. I had booked a room with two double beds for three people. When I arrived I was given a room with one queen . They blamed Orbitz. ,I had even called the hotel directly several days previouly to confirm everything. Staff denied that I had called them stating I must have contacted Orbitz.. I showed them on my cell the call to them. One of the boys had to sleep on the floor. No rollaways available. We were given a more expensive room for remainder of our stay which compensated somewhat for the initial inconvenience

Good location

Went back for or second stay in 2 months. Room 113 is about the worst location for a room, but we enjoyed our stay.

Close to the beach

Literally across the street from the beach. Old hotel. Rooms are clean but very small. Lots of "one of a kind" type restaurants and shops within walking distance. Area not for the conservative type. Wednesday's Farmers Market is fun.

Just what we needed

Our stay started out wonderfully from the start. We arrived an hour before check-in and the manager was happy to allow an early one. This allowed us to park for free in the hotel parking lot. Otherwise there is no free parking near the beach. Walking in, you immediately step into a GORGEOUS outdoor courtyard, full of beautiful flowers/plants, tables to relax at, all surrounding a tranquil fountain. I don't know if all rooms are the same, but ours was very basic. Newly remodeled bathrooms with a very nice shower. No bathtub which was a little tricky with our one year old. The only other negatives were that there was not alot of counter space, nor any available outlets for phone chargers and blow dryers. We had to unplug the a/c unit to use them. Not bad thought. This was comPletely made up by the fact that we were RIGHT across the street from the beach! And our trip was for that reason specifically, not to be in the room very long. We would love to stay again!!!

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

There wasn't a ton of places within walking distance to eat at, but the pizza and sandwiches we did find nearby were worth going back to our next trip to SD.
