Built by Larry Imig in 1946, the Lafayette Hotel & Suites spent its first few decades as a popular spot among celebrities and movie stars. Dining

Red Fox Steak House
The quintessential steakhouse that doesn't just reach for the lounge vibe, it helped define it. The entire interior was shipped to the United States for blonde cinema actress, Marion Davies, and was dismantled (again!) and installed at the Lafayette during the 1950's. If the history and nightly piano doesn't get you, the stiff cocktails, steak, and seafood surely will. Hours: Monday - Thursday (11am - Midnight) Friday - Saturday (11am - 1:30am) Sunday (4pm - 1:30am)
Imig's Kitchen & Bar
Loved by locals and guest alike, Imig's serves up a modern, casual and honest twist on breakfast and brunch. The relaxed and open setting gives guests the perfect space to gather daily for breakfast, brunch (or both, after all you're on vacation) or a mid-day custom cocktail overlooking the historic Weissmuller Pool. Hours: Everyday (7am - 3pm)
North Park Neighborhood Restaurants
Quickly becoming nationally recognized for it's culinary diversity and appreciation for craft beer, the neighborhood offers Lafayette guests an incredible opportunity for food exploration. We encourage you to dine with us once (ok, maybe twice) and then experience the local cuisine within our wonderful neighborhood! Our front desk can assist with recommendations and reservations.

Very old & outdated

Even though we stayed in a large suite room, it was smelly and the carpet and furniture was stained and old. The pool area was large and seemed ok, but the other amenities were not up to standards with regard to the price we paid. The best part was the closeness to the Zoo and Old Town but the surrounding area was kind of sleazy with a lot of strip clubs. I don't think I would recommend this hotel to family or friends.

Funky comfort

The Lafayette Hotel and Suites in San Diego is steeped in nostalgia for the heyday of Hollywood. My 10yr old son and I recently spent 4 night there while visiting San Diego and would definitely stay there again. While the rooms were pretty small- there's a big difference in what passed for luxury in 1946 and in 2007...the rooms were clean and the beds comfortable. The location was great, maybe just a mile or two north east of Balboa Park and all the attractions there. We mostly ate at the hotel for their complimentary breakfast and evening dinners. The menu is limited, but all the food we chose was good quality and reasonably priced. The outdoor swimming pool, designed by Johnny Weismueller(!) was clean and a big attraction. There was also a hot tub in a little area tucked behind some palm trees off the pool area. There is parking in an underground garage, too, which was very safe and convient. Overall, we were very pleased with our stay at The Lafayette and would chose it again.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

The San Diego Zoo and other attractions at Balboa Park are a short drive from the hotel. It is also quite convient to routes north along the coast with La Jolla and the sea lions only about 20 mins north, Torrey Pine State Reserve 10 mins beyond that, and, of course, Legoland about 10 mins further north in Carlsbad.

Convenient Location

Interesting location. This hotel is a nice gem located among a smattering strip clubs and other late night joints. It was nice to see the diversity among the hotel staff and surrounding community. The hotel has a lot of character and was clean. Breakfast was nice. Parking was free and convenient. Noisey air conditioner kept waking us up. Next time I would prefer a modern clean box of a place located next to other hotels and tourist types. However if your focus is Balboa Park this is an ideal spot. Short walk and bus ride gets you there.

Spacious rooms, but...

bathroom was quite small. Pipes in the building are probably pretty old as the temperature in the shower went from too hot to too cold without any adjustments on my part. In fact, besides having the retro decor to the hotel, the building is just old. TV was old and the controller either couldn't turn on the TV or the TV kept turning off after I turned it on. OK place to stay at if you're just looking for a bed at a decent price. There's not much to do around the hotel within walking distance. There was also a small vanity area by the small fridge and microwave in the room which was a surprising amenity.

Nice hotel, rooms needs work

The Lafayette Hotel and Suites was a decent place but does need work. The staff is great and very friendly. The pool area was very clean and the rest of the grounds where clean. The rooms needs work. If they would buy new carpet and paint the hotel would be a lot nicer and worth what I paid per night. In addition the hair dryer in the bathroom had frayed wires and just hanging on the wall. The thermostat for the AC was the same way. Other than the rooms, these rest of the hotel is very clean. The free internet services is a plus.

Family fit

This hotel was fit for a couple or a family. Friendly service and resonable prices. The breakfast offered was more than we expected. Very helpful at the front desk with directions to many locations in San diego. The bar tender was friendly during the first night of our stay, but the second day when we were laying by the pool he had a problem waiting on us(remembering our order and not even bring us what we ordered) and being friendly. Over all good place.

Nice Hotel

The Lafayette has a very nice pool, really big. The breakfast was so-so, too many people in a small room. The hotel is really not far from Old Town and the others San Diego attractions (like the Zoo, Balboa Park, etc ...). But there is nothing around the hotel at walking distance. The free parking is really a nice plus. The rooms are not the best but for the price it's a good deal.
