Dining

Red Fox Steak House
The quintessential steakhouse that doesn't just reach for the lounge vibe, it helped define it. The entire interior was shipped to the United States for blonde cinema actress, Marion Davies, and was dismantled (again!) and installed at the Lafayette during the 1950's. If the history and nightly piano doesn't get you, the stiff cocktails, steak, and seafood surely will. Hours: Monday - Thursday (11am - Midnight) Friday - Saturday (11am - 1:30am) Sunday (4pm - 1:30am)
Imig's Kitchen & Bar
Loved by locals and guest alike, Imig's serves up a modern, casual and honest twist on breakfast and brunch. The relaxed and open setting gives guests the perfect space to gather daily for breakfast, brunch (or both, after all you're on vacation) or a mid-day custom cocktail overlooking the historic Weissmuller Pool. Hours: Everyday (7am - 3pm)
North Park Neighborhood Restaurants
Quickly becoming nationally recognized for it's culinary diversity and appreciation for craft beer, the neighborhood offers Lafayette guests an incredible opportunity for food exploration. We encourage you to dine with us once (ok, maybe twice) and then experience the local cuisine within our wonderful neighborhood! Our front desk can assist with recommendations and reservations.

Beautiful Nostalgic Hotel

The Lafayette Hotel was an overall great experience. Especially for the price we paid ($59.12/night), it was well worth it. The Hotel has a very nostalgic past and beautiful decor by the pool/patio area. There are great palm trees which help you feel very relaxed. The spa was warm, but the jets were not working. We were upgraded to a suite which was a VERY nice gesture from the Hotel. The rooms are a bit outdated and the carpet and furniture are a bit shabby with spots. The bathroom was in DESPERATE need of a remodel. HOWEVER, we were very fortunate to meet a great front desk staff member, [...] (the guy), who was very helpful and friendly. He explained to us that the hotel will be going through a remodel because it has been declared a Historic Building through the City of San Diego and also answered a lot of our questions. He was a great addition to the hotel! My family and I are ghost lovers and if you go, make sure to ask about the Hotel's Haunted Happenings! : ) Overall, it was a great experience, and even without a remodel, we would stay again!

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

In the Hotel there is a Bar and Grill, and they give a GREAT Continental Breakfast in the mornings. Also, attached to the Hotel is a restaurant. It was a bit pricy, but sounded delicious. And within walking distance, about 4-5 minutes, is a McDonald's and a Denny's, so that helped us.

Good Location for a zoo visit

Our stay at this hotel was following our Valentines day at the San Diego Zoo. They offered a great deal and we felt like we got More than our monies worth. It was easy to find, and our room was quite a bit larger than we thought. Overall a great place. However, there was not nearly enough if any outdoor lighting. Our room was along the back of the hotel and our entrance almost impossible as we could not see where to go. There are a lack of signs indicating how to get to your room when you park and because of not being able to see, it makes spotting the door into the complex very hard. Also, there is an extreme lack of parking. We got back to the hotel around 9:30 and had to find a spot along the street. My personal feeling is that if you are paying to stay at a decent hotel, you should have dedicated parking, and not have to search for a spot on a busy street that is a distance away, especially not knowing what kind of local laws there are and being afraid of towing. That said, it was in all other aspects a great hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I made use of their business center, and the breakfast was small, but free and nice. I would come back to this place.

Alright

We didn't have high expectations when we went to the hotel we just needed a place to sleep on our vacation. The place is pleasing to the eye but the rooms itself is lacking in maintenance. The mattresses are horribly uncomfortable probably the worst part it felt like a cardboard box. The bathroom was okay but the bathtub fawcet wouldn't stop leaking and the tub didn't drain. The breakfast was good, needs more fresh fruit variety in my opinion, but this is a 2 star hotel. Pool good and good location we were close to everything we wanted to see. Literally minutes away from downtown San Diego, that part I loved. All in all we weren't suprised and we weren't in love either.

Denny's up the street is the best one I've ever been to. We missed the breakfast by like 20 minutes and walked there instead and loved eating there.

Great location, hotel needs some help

So I had stayed here in September with a big group and didn't really see much of the hotel but I remember it being in an area central to just about everything in NorthPark so I figured I'd stay again. Alright, so the guy at the front desk was a little dry and I didn't get the warm fuzzies from him. Fine, whatever, it happens. I'll live. He gives me this map that doesn't do much in terms of telling me where my room is and even better the parking garage is on the exact opposite side of the hotel from my room even though there's a small lot on the side that is actually very close to my room. That is, if I could get to my room without having to walk halfway across the hotel to backtrack to my room. I understand that there's a bar on that side of the hotel and they probably don't want people off the street being able to wander anywhere near the rooms (at least this is the only reason I can think of). The long and short of this whole rant here is that the hotel isn't laid out too well and check your map because there might be a better parking option. So, the room...I walked into a hot, humid room that smelled like cigarettes and chocolate for some reason (non smoking room mind you). The bed was hard as a rock and the bedding was a standard hotel bedding with an itchy comforter I immediately ripped off. Having to walk all over the hotel to go back up to our room (there's a stair case near the room but the door locks behind you on the way out) was a bit annoying, the front desk guy was snarky each day when we asked for more coffee, and the room smelled. Those are pretty much all the negatives I've got. The Red Fox bar is totally awesome. Cheap drinks, good food, and really great service. The location of this hotel is pretty great. There are so many amazing places to eat in NorthPark that I couldn't really list them all here. I appreciate the history of the Lafayette but I wish they'd update their rooms as the tiny TVs and horrible beds really ruined it for me.

GOLDEN DONUT. Do yourself a favor and go there before you check in. It's on University and Texas. Buy some apple fritters (they are HUGE, easily split between two people) and let them sit for a few days. They'll get delicious and crispy. The Thai tea and coffee are incredible (albeit super strong). Best donuts I've ever had anywhere. If you were looking for a nice stroll (which you might want I mean it is donuts we're talking about here afterall) I suppose you could walk but you could also drive.

Spring Break Getaway

We were able to check in early. Staff was nice but did not explain about hotel or the flyers they had with places near hotel. Room was small but worked for us. The room slept 4 people but they only left enough towels for 2, was not happy having to keep requesting extra towels. The beds were uncomfortable. The breakfast was nice but was disappointed that there was not a selection of fruit or pastries. They only had apples, sliced bread & plain bagels. They also served the same cereal for 3 days in a row, which was Raisin Bran. The waffles were good but took along time as there was a huge line (had to make yourself & only two waffle makers)The fitness room was a joke. It had 2 pieces of equipment that were out dated and falling apart. I asked and they stated that is all they had. The hotel had a lot of history and was neat to look at the pictures and read the articles. The hotel was close to the freeways and a great location to stay at. We had a good time overall.

They gave a list of the local restaturants that were close along with the nearest stores (grocery. pharmacy, wal-mart), malls and attractions. They included detailed directions or maps which were very helpful. We dined at a few of the restaturants on the list and were impressed with the food. However, they did not tell us about the Steakhouse located on the property, I found it by accident. Didn't eat there though.

Great value

Parts of the common areas in the hotel were being renovated so it was a little messy. Definitely not a 4 star facility but it clearly could be; some of it's former grandeur are evident in the main lobby and pool area. The attached restaurant was dated as well and in need of updating; it was also a bit pricey. All in all I would stay there again and the price I paid per night was an exceptional value.

Decent Hotel

This was a decent hotel. Website photos were a little deceiving. The pool area was great. Hotel was undergoing some renovations at the time of our stay. The rooms were a little dirty and in need of some upkeep. Breakfast was good. Hotel was a little tricky getting to from the Freeway the first time. It wasn't a horrible place to stay, but would probably take my chances somewhere else.
