Clean and comfortable

Kona Kai is literally right on the water. Rooms and resort are exceptionally clean and comfortable however a bit outdated, especially the bathrooms. Cleanliness overshadowed need for updating. Pool is nice. Do have to pay $15 per night for parking which was unadvertised until arrival.

Front Desk Staff needs improvement

The front office person when we went in were not helpful We had a better price on the internet and they would not honor it so we had to go back into the internet to book. This is the hotel we stay at regularly when we go to San diego. The room was fine, the house keeping staff were great, we asked for a bath chair, they had it in our room quickly. The bartendar was friendly. The place does need updating.

pre-flight hotel

good location on Shelter Island, < 5 minutes from the airport. first room smelled like cigarette smoke - really bad. they offered up another room without any problem. Hotel has been bought by a big chain and rennovations are planned. After that work is done, this is going to be a really nice place to stay... in the meantime, there are definitely better places to stay on Shelter Island or Harbor Island. free airport shuttle was very much appreciated. I hope the new hotel chain keeps the current staff.

Comfy bed for a small room.

I loved the soft bed and pillow. Great views of the harbor. But carpet needs replacing. Sink drain was clogged. Oh and don't order the chocolate cake at the restraruant. It cost $8 and was was just a small tasteless preice of like a chocolate muffin with a little chocolate sauce on top. But our kids loved the pool and the kids play area on the beach behind the hotel.

Great Location But just OK overall

The Kona Kai was nice, clean, and comfortable. For the price however, I would've expected that we wouldn't have to carry our own luggage up to the room on the second floor (no elevators). For anyone who doesn't necessarily travel light, this can be quite the task. The front desk attendant was a little strange as well. Besides that it was well maintained and had a fabulous location.

Coronado island was spectacular for boutique shopping and great views of the San Diego skyline. The city is right down the street and the airport is even closer! Very conveinent.

Secluded Getaway

The hotel was well-equipped, self-sufficient, and blessed with water views all around. I didn't expect the relative distance from town, but it's a nice quiet getaway.

Property is Aging

The Kona Kai is an aging hotel with great potential. The property needs an upgrade and the restaurant needs a new menu with better food and better preparation.

Great views

The location was close to everything and I enjoyed having the view of the bay and downtown San Diego on one side and the Marina on the other side. Unfortunately, I was not able to take advantage of the dining room, spa or pool, as I did not spend much time at Kona Kai. Instead, I was kept busy sightseeing and working in town.
