Nostalgic getaway
Kings Inn looks like it was built in the glorious 1960's heyday of themed vacation hotels. It is the only place on San Diego's Hotel Circle that has any genuine historical character. Populuxe enthusiasts will love its sleek lines, kitschy sign, and chunky outdoor staircases. I only wish they had kept the original paint scheme, which was surely more garish and exuberant--I'm picturing royal purple and sea foam green. This hotel brings to mind those wonderful Ken Chimes motels or the Ace in Palm Springs. It's also clean, well-managed, and conveniently located, literally a three-minute drive from Hillcrest if you take I-8 to the 163. Travelers in search of sterile, unmemorable chain hotel blandness should look elsewhere. Cool retro Americana lives on at the Kings Inn!

Short drive from hotel
After you've seen the classic but overtouristed areas like the Gaslamp quarter and Hillcrest, get out into the neighborhoods--especially University Heights, Normal Heights, and North Park--for great strolling, independent coffeehouses, quirky shops, and charming little restaurants in the real San Diego.

Decent hotel
There were a couple of problems -- we couldn't get the TV to work and dirty water bubbled up in the bath tub -- but they were resolved quickly and effectively. We enjoyed the pool and the onsite restaraunts.

Going West on Hotel Circle S, then Taylor, reaches Old Town to the East a few blocks after Taylor curves. Much shopping and historical museums, plus Mexican restaurants, with free parking in 4/12. Could even walk if no plans for large shopping items.

Not bad for the price
The hotel's location is convenient - close to both Mission Bay and Coronado. The room was pretty small, but is generally clean. The wall looks thin, so the sound insulation is not very good - we can hear people talking outside. Overall, this is good value for the price and location.

Great Staff - Good location
It is an average inexpensive room, but a very friendly staff. I would go back when they have promotions. I stayed a week and they upgraded my room when I checked in. Very nice staff.

Good Value - Great Staff
When I had some electrical problems in the room which affected the computer driven lock, the staff let me use another room until they were able to solve the problem.
