Great location
Fifty something. Nov 14, 2009
Not impressive from the outside but inside is quite another story. Very modern, hip decor, and staff too. Beautiful pool area ... with great views which turns into a nightclub at night. Disco downstairs was quiet but yet another mix and mingle venue which apparently picks up on the weekends. A new wine tasting "system" should be expereinced. 80 different wines dispensed by tastes, half and full glasses. And reasonable. This is an ideal 20 and 30 something hotel but enjoyed by this 50 something as well. Only lookout, which can be a considerable one is that the "rack rate" rooms are tiny, I mean small. Smaller than my bedroom at home and that includes the bathroom. 2 people would not have been comfortable--imagine a cruise ship room. So if you stay there upgrade to a larger room, perhaps a suite.

The service at The Ivy was great. Upon check-in, we were given a free room upgrade. The hotel looks great and the staff was ... really friendly and helpful. A complimentary Escalade service is provided for trips within a 2 mile radius of the hotel. The location is great, as it is close to multiple night spots and numerous restaurants. The reason for only four stars was that the hallway outside our room wasn't pleasant smelling for the duration of our weekend trip.

Overall just a great place - and a good palce for a romantic getaway.

Anyone who stays at the Ivy may enter the nightclub on the first floor without a cover charge. The hotel and nightclub each ... have a very artsy/contemporary design with warm/neutral colors that keeps your eye stimulated, but not distracted/overwhelmed. The pool located on the top of the building overlooks the cityscape of San Diego. The pool is open from dawn til dusk, but plenty of lounge seating is available during the late hours to enjoy the ambiance of the pool's interchanging lights and San Diego's Mediterranean climate.

Parking in downtown San Diego is always difficult. With valet parking only $60 for the two nights i stayed, I could have easily spent that paying meters on other lots. Not to mention their valet staff are professional, polite and punctual. $20 for parking may sound expensive, but in the long run their service will save you TIME and MONEY.

A nice hotel in a good location
Steve (a Couples traveler) Jul 20, 2009
My wife and I just got back from our stay at the Ivy Hotel. It was a good (not great) experience. First, the pros: The ... hotel is beautiful and is in a great location, just a block or so from the action of the Gaslamp Quarter. They have a really great club which is both downstairs from the hotel (with a separate entrance for non-guests of the hotel) and on the rooftop. Young singles would love this place. The rooms are a nice size and the bathrooms are great. Everything in San Diego (even La Jolla and the Zoo) is a short drive from the hotel. Also, the valet staff and the bellmen are friendly and very helpful. Now, the cons: The inside staff were very slow to respond to our requests. For two nights in a row, the housekeepers forgot to leave washcloths for us, and when we called to have washcloths brought up to our room, it took half an hour to an hour. Mind you, the hotel is not that big. Also, they failed to replenish our glasses in the room after the ones they left for the previous night had been used. The front desk staff is generally not helpful outside of checking in. We had an issue with one of our bags being overweight and we wanted to send some stuff home via FedEx. It took the staff several hours to try to locate a box for us (after we reminded them twice), and we ultimately never even got a box. When we asked for directions when we checked-out, the woman at the front desk had no idea how to get back to the airport. One of the two concierges we spoke to, Chris I believe, was very helpful and good with suggesting restaurants and giving directions. The other gentleman was not. On weekends (Thurs-Sat), the hotel turns into a club. My wife and I didn't mind the loud music playing until 1:30 because we took advantage of the hotel's rooftop on more than one occasion. But beware that things get real crazy on the weekends. If you're looking for a hotel to get a good night's rest, this surely is not the one to book. Overall, the hotel was nice, modern, clean and was in a good location. If you're looking to party, this hotel is definitely for you.

The San Diego Zoo is a ten minute drive from the hotel. The beaches (Pacific and La Jolla) are about 15 minutes away and are a great place to go to relax, eat and have a drink.

Great value and business meeting host
The Closer Jul 18, 2009
Had an excellent business meeting on rooftop. Service was terrific and staff are very personal. Pool party on Sunday is an ... adult only affair. Views of the best this city offers...excellent! Short walk to shopping, nightlife, dining, Conference Center, cigar and coffee shops, and easy access to historic Gas Light area. The only place I'll stay in San Diego. I stay in a lot of hotels around the country and this rates as one of the best at a very reasonable rate.

total disaster. We discovered on arrival that this hotel is the trendy hot spot in town, where the disco on the roof and in ... the lobby are open until 2:00 AM and the music is blasted at 100 decibles. So we figured we made a bad choice, but tried to make the best of it. The staff said the music would end by 1:00 AM, after which we should be able to sleep. But low and behold, I was awakened at 3:00 in the morning to the sound of a disco drum beat which reverberated through our room. Finally, I called the desk at 4:00 AM and [...] answered. When I complained about the music, she said she would take care of it and turn it off! It turns out it was the hotel's sound system that was on at 4:00 in the morning! A few minutes later the noise ended. We complained to management when we checked out, but the most they would do is comp us the parking and breakfast. Not good enough for a $375 a night room.
