Historic all-suite hotel near Balboa Park
Sitting on the edge of Balboa Park, the seven-story Park Manor is an independently owned, all-suite boutique hotel. The building itself dates back to 1926 and interior arches and moldings invoke a simpler time. Rooms are modern and spacious; even standard room measure 525 square feet. Guests receive complimentary continental breakfast in a penthouse dining room and two on-site restaurants--Inn at the Park and Top of the Park--offer very different dining experiences.
Highlights
  • Situated on the doorstep of Balboa Park
  • Dine at two on-site restaurants
  • Authentic turn-of-the-century décor
  • Complimentary continental breakfast
Rooms

Park Manor Suites offers 75 suites varying in size with views of Balboa Park or San Diego Bay. Each room comes standard with a Sealy Posturepedic bed, antique furnishings and a cozy kitchenette. Guests receive complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access.

Features

The Park Manor was built in 1926 and has retained most of its grandeur and details from that era. Crown moldings line the ceilings of every room. Archways ring the lobby.

Despite these historic touches, the property is totally modern. Guests receive complimentary continental breakfast in a penthouse dining room and a complimentary bottle of water upon check-in. There's also free parking and free Wi-Fi. The hotel offers 24-hour laundry service (fees apply) as well.

Two on-site restaurants provide guests with eclectic dining options. Inn at the Park is a California-style bistro with a spacious outdoor patio and a lively piano bar. Top of the Park is more formal and is situated at the top of the hotel, where guests can savor panoramic views while they dine. The Top of the Park is only open for lunch.

Decent location, somewhat noisy

No air conditioning. Had to sleep with windows open and being located between 6th and 5th street was pretty noisy!

Shabby Chic for the adventurous traveler

This venerable property is right next to beautiful Balboa park and is one of its main assets. The price is competitive for this prime location but there are some caveats. The big beds are clean and comfortable but the bathrooms and kitchenettes are VINTAGE and very small and could use some upgrades. While the floors have newer carpeting they cannot hide their real age so you can hear people walk down the halls as the joists and floorboards creak and vibrate. The same is true with noise coming through the ceiling and walls. I could hear hall conversations very clearly. When I was checking in on Friday evening there was a LONG line of men waiting to enter the elevator. These folks were all going to attend the happy hour on the top floor. This is apparently a major attraction for folks who enjoy alternative lifestyles. I was not bothered by any of these customers but was concerned that things might get rowdy. Fortunately the festivities ended by 9:30 p.m. so the noise was not a problem when I wanted to get some sleep. There are dining venues within walking distance but be sure to arrive at them by 8:30 or 9 p.m. at the latest. I went to a place that said they were open until 10 p.m. but they were shutting down at 9:30. There is a large selection of eateries at the Gaslamp district on 5th and 6th streets but you will need to drive there and parking is impossible. Take a cab. The continental breakfast was generous and well stocked and is included in the price of the room. All in all this was an OK venue for the price. I would have preferred a newer property if I had it to do over again. I love older properties but this one still needs more upgrades to compete in the San Diego market.

Park Manor Suites

We really liked the place. The suite was HUGE! It was definitely nice to stay in such a large suite for a great price so close to downtown. It seems to me that this was an old apartment complex. It was definitely an older building. They've done a lot to retain its older feel, and it has a lot of antiques and even tapestries and other classical art.

Excellent Staff!

It has been a long time since I have an encountered such a friendly and accomodating hotel staff. They couldn't have been more helpful to me and my business partner as we were attending a convention at the San Diego convention center. We forgot a few things and they let us borrow a few items which made our trade show a success!

Huge room/suite

This is a big suite with a kitchen and dishes/silverware. Huge closet. Older but well kept and clean. Big king bed but has that plastic underneath the sheet that makes it hard for me to sleep. I had to keep the windows open all the time even in winter. Is there A/C in the summmer? I didn't see it. Love the location + continental breakfast on the roof.

Excellent weekend

Great hotel. Old world style with class. Near everything my partner and i wanted to do. Hillcrest neighborhood was a few blocks away(could of driven but it was kinda chilly). Good size room. OWN FULL KITCHEN!!!!!! The only thing it could do is update the furniture and maybe paint white all the wood accents in the kitchen(gives it a clean look) but definitely NOT a deal breaker. Very Nice continental breakfast on the rooftop. Spectacular views from the top. Parking is free but hard to find at night. They have a restaurant and piano bar so the lot was full. We had to park on the street. Didn't have any bad experiences with staff. As for the staff, they were very nice. Fast and easy check-in. We didn't need anything so there was no need to call/request anything during our stay so we can't comment too much on that.

Old Town Mexican Cafe in Old Town. yummy carnitas. not dry at all with all the fixins. Good marguaritas. Drinking- if you're gay, go up fifth ave. You can walk if you want. Not far at all. The Loft was a cool place to have a drink. Not a WEHO type of bar. very friendly people. Neighborhood bar.

Good for adults, not so much for kids

It was quiet and nice right across for a playground at balboa park. The free breakfast was nice. The staff was friendly. Our 2-bedroom suite was huge and there was a walk-through closet where we could put the playpen so my son had his own area. The kitchen was convient for snacking and lunches. The fans in each room were nice and needed. Now it's old. Really old and there's heavy, heavy wood furniture everywhere that is super uncomfortable. Mirrors and scary statues everywhere. The kids (and me)were freaked out. Tables with glass on top and sharp corners. My toddler probably had 5 accidents with his face.

The front desk staff could not

The front desk staff could not have been more helpful and for what we paid for the room it was a steal. Two big bedrooms and a large kitchen and separate lounge, the joined bathroom is a tad small but that was the only thing I could make an average comment on. Although not in the city centre, in a good location across from a 7/11 and down the road from a local pub/eatery. All in all, excellent choice!

Reasonable alternative to downtown hotel

Great staff---very helpful. A little off the beaten path but clean and spacious. The building is historic and it seems the owners have made great attempts to keep it that way ( though the wireless access was great!!). Being on the older side, there were some creaks in the floor from above. Right across the street from Balboa park-- beautiful place to walk/run and close to zoo.

Park Manor Suites

I have previously stayed at 4 and 5-star venues in San Diego but this was by far the most comfortable, spacious and friendly properties I have ever experienced. Being a single traveller this time, I was particularly appreciative of the friendly and warm attention of the staff. The piano bar, restaurant and roof patio made this a place to linger rather than go out searching for other dining spots. The suite was spacious, quiet and spotlessly clean. Being next to Balboa Park, all the amenities were within walking distance, as was the vibrant neighbourhood of Hillcrest, just a ten minute walk away. Even more astounding, parking was free! The first opportunity I have, my plan is to return to Park Manor Suites for another relaxing stay. For the business traveller, the suites offer a quiet and peaceful alternative to the hustle and bustle of the busy central hotels, yet you are only 5 minutes drive from downtown. Top marks to the Park Manor Suites!

Dining tip: In Hotel

Do not waste time searching for dining/entertainment venues elsewhere. This is one of the best in San Diego. Three-course meal specials are also offered at very reasoable prices. As a single diner, I was able to return with half a bottle of wine for dinner the following evening! That's a first in N. America for me.
