Sprawling luxury near shores of Mission Bay with spa and water slides
The Hyatt Regency occupies prime real estate along the shores of Mission Bay, giving guests panoramic views of the water at every turn. The property, renovated in 2010, consists of three separate buildings that flank three outdoor pools. The luxury hotel also boasts a full-service marina and an eco-friendly spa. The on-site restaurant, Red Marlin Restaurant, Bar and Terrace, specializes in fresh-catch seafood and, of course, tropical drinks.Highlights
- Eco-friendly spa
- Child-friendly water slides land in three pools
- Soak up breathtaking views of Mission Bay
- On-site restaurant specializes in fresh-catch seafood
Rooms
The Hyatt Regency offers 429 rooms and 12 suites. Accommodations vary in size and configuration but come standard with balcony or patio, flat-screen TV, Hyatt Grand Bed, iHome docking station and in-room safe. Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access is available (fees apply) and all guests receive complimentary nightly turndown service.
Features
The Hyatt Regency Mission Bay completed a $65-million renovation in early 2010, during which the pools, guest rooms and meeting rooms were revamped. The property is now the only hotel in San Diego with multiple water slides into its pools.
All guests have complimentary access to the 24-hour StayFit Gym fitness center, which boasts the latest cardiovascular and free weight equipment. Guests can also book massages at the Blue Marble Spa, an eco-friendly spa that uses only organic products during treatments and serves only organic foods to customers while they wait.
Grab a fish taco and a margarita at the Red Marlin Restaurant, Bar and Terrace, a modern restaurant in the hotel lobby. The restaurant specializes in fresh-catch seafood--it's a good bet your entrée was swimming in Mission Bay shortly before you arrived.

OUTSTANDING FAMILY VACATION
ENJOYED A 3FOR1 PASS TO THE ZOO,WILD SAFARI AND SEA WORLD. LITTLE DISAPPOINTED WITH SEA WORLD. HOTEL STAY WAS WONDERFUL, THE VIEW WAS INCREDIBLE. THE ONLY ISSUE FOR OUR FAMILY WAS THAT WE WAITED TIL THE FOG BURNED OFF WHICH WAS FROM 10AM - 100PM. SHOULD OF STARTED OUR DAY EARLIER OR TRAVEL IN APRIL.

Family vacation
This was a family vacation with 2 adults and 4 teenagers and one 5 yr old. We had two rooms located in the towers which were awesome rooms with balconies and the bed were very comfortable. We used the bus system and trolleys(only $5 a person and is good all day and they go everywhere up til midnight) to get around to area attractions such as the zoo and corondo island. We also took advantage of the free shuttle the valet offers to belmont park/mission beach. Vehicle parking is 18 per night and sometimes hard to find a parking spot late. Over all awesome place. Loved the pools and the bonfire each night. One complaint is there is no vending machines so you have to buy water or drinks and snacks while you are out or get them at the bagel place before it closes at 4:00.

Short walk from hotel
We ate at Einsteins bagels by the fitness center and also along that same route. If you walk past the bagel place and down the boardwalk past the fish restaurant and the rental places to the last building on the boardwalk on the left(only a five minute walk) there is a little diner/Grill place called Landing Grill that serves a home cooked breakfast and has lunch for way cheaper than the restaurant(Red Marlin). Five and six dollars for a large breakfast. Great for family with kids that only want to pay a few bucks for scrambled eggs and toast. The red Marlin is outrageously expensive. We paid $5.00 for a glass of coke there.

Very nice
We were there off-season (March) so we were not among the few who used the pool but those that did seemed to enjoy it very much. It was also very quiet and beautiful area to walk around. Lovely location and a short distance by car to everything - gaslamp district, Old Town, scenic drive to La Jolla, Balboa Park. (We found our GPS system invaluable). The staff was friendly and polite and they were very responsive to our requests. Comfortable beds as well. We never ate in the hotel as it's on the expensive side but San Diego has an incredible number of restaurants in all price ranges. Beware of the bottled water in the fridge - very expensive if you use one!

Overall the hotel was great. I was there on business taking a class, so I didn't have much time in the room. I enjoyed it and would stay there again.

Pros and Cons
When we first arrived, we were given a room very near the front door. A giant stain on the couch and the stench of mold greeted us. We woke up completely stuffed up and asked to move. The desk person, Laura, did comp our parking for our stay and upgraded our room (to the tune of $20 per night more). It was a much nicer room overlooking the gardens. It was too close to the pool, however, as screaming kids seemed to like to swim around 7 a.m. That and the flight plan over the hotel did not invite sleeping in. We did like the work out room and the convenience of the Einstein's Bagel Shop and while the food was very good at the on-site restaurant, the prices were outrageous...$70 for two appetizers and one margarita.

Nice Place Overall
The hotel is designed quite nicely, with the various rooms contained in 4 different buildings: Bay I and II, the Tower, and the Suites. The pools are located in between Bay II and the Tower, while the Red Marlin restaurant, the gym, and the bagel shop located along the marina boardwalk, behind the hotel. Neither the bagel shop nor the Red Marlin are busy for most of the day, so breakfast is quick and easy, as is lunch and dinner. The bagel shop doesn't have freshly baked bagels, they reheat frozen ones. The service and food at the Red Marlin were excellent. The rooms in Bay II (where I stayed) are standard hotel flair: two queen-sized beds, desk, TV, closet, and bathroom. The shower had good pressure, and water was consistently warm. Most of the staff is friendly and helpful. The concierge was helpful, but not at discovering the smaller attractions in the area. It wasn't until the last day that one of the concierge mentioned a place with a wave pool and a place with go-kart racing, and it took a local to find out about natural hot springs that were merely an hour inland. The beach is minutes away (within walking distance actually). If you do have a car, there is a fee for parking, which is $20 a night. It's worthwhile, then, to use the valet at a charge of an additional $5 a night. That said, the biggest negative about the hotel is that you have to pay for everything. There is a fee for internet access at tiered prices, the water in the room's fridge is not complimentary, and there is no free breakfast.

Phil's BBQ is an excellent place for dinner or lunch, but it is usually packed out the door. Call ahead for a "To-Go" order. The food is rather good for the price, even though the staff there may not be (most were fine, it just takes one to spoil the experience though).

Beach, Parks, and all the sites.
My wife and I made a last minute reservation for San Diego during a holiday weekend. The Hyatt Mission Bay was one of few hotels with vacancies as a large convention was in town. The price was quite high but the views Mission Bay plus the hotel service was top notch. We stayed 4 nights and were very pleased with all aspects of the hotel except the prices at the restaurants, bars, and provision shop. It's probably typical though for a higher-end hotel. We actually found much better food for a fraction of the price in downtown and along Pacific Beach. The accommodations were pristine and the staff were always welcoming and happy to see us. The amenities were operational (pools and hot tub) even during the cooler nights with gusty winds from a spring rainstorm. We are definitely planning a return trip!
