Sprawling luxury near shores of Mission Bay with spa and water slides
The Hyatt Regency occupies prime real estate along the shores of Mission Bay, giving guests panoramic views of the water at every turn. The property, renovated in 2010, consists of three separate buildings that flank three outdoor pools. The luxury hotel also boasts a full-service marina and an eco-friendly spa. The on-site restaurant, Red Marlin Restaurant, Bar and Terrace, specializes in fresh-catch seafood and, of course, tropical drinks.
Highlights
  • Eco-friendly spa
  • Child-friendly water slides land in three pools
  • Soak up breathtaking views of Mission Bay
  • On-site restaurant specializes in fresh-catch seafood
Rooms

The Hyatt Regency offers 429 rooms and 12 suites. Accommodations vary in size and configuration but come standard with balcony or patio, flat-screen TV, Hyatt Grand Bed, iHome docking station and in-room safe. Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access is available (fees apply) and all guests receive complimentary nightly turndown service.

Features

The Hyatt Regency Mission Bay completed a $65-million renovation in early 2010, during which the pools, guest rooms and meeting rooms were revamped. The property is now the only hotel in San Diego with multiple water slides into its pools.

All guests have complimentary access to the 24-hour StayFit Gym fitness center, which boasts the latest cardiovascular and free weight equipment. Guests can also book massages at the Blue Marble Spa, an eco-friendly spa that uses only organic products during treatments and serves only organic foods to customers while they wait.

Grab a fish taco and a margarita at the Red Marlin Restaurant, Bar and Terrace, a modern restaurant in the hotel lobby. The restaurant specializes in fresh-catch seafood--it's a good bet your entrée was swimming in Mission Bay shortly before you arrived.

Decaying hotel With a beautiful view

Friendly staff, magnificent view and great location are the great things about this hotel. It's a shame that our room was plagued with annoying maintenance problems. Just to list a few, the cooler wasn't working and after insisting with the concierge, we received an additional cooler unit that was dropped on the bedroom floor of our room (the old broken unit was kept in its original spot). The phone at desk was also broken, and the OLD lamps in the barroom had a horrific noise.

Gas Lamp district at 5th / 6th ave has plenty of options. We went to Sevilla restaurant for tapas, which was a pleasant surprise with fun live music on Sundays.

Good, but could be even better

The location was great and the view toward Mission Bay was fantastic. But I have two issues: (1) The sound insulation with adjoining rooms was not good; I could hear the guests in the next room without straining. (2) I know many hotels do this, but to be charged $20 a night for parking (self) seems cheesy. It looks as if the hotel is trying to squeeze profit out of amenities that used to be free

Great couples retreat

This was a get away for our 21st anniversary. We loved our stay and the hotel was great we were gone a lot but our room was clean and comfortable. The king suite was a great place to spend some time alone with each other. We want to come back.

Near everything.

We found ourselves in the middle of everything at this hotel. Three restaurants on the property, all of them with different types of food and drink. An excellent spa area, and a very helpful concierge. We stayed here on our honeymoon and we were very pleased with the room. A neat pool area complete with waterslides and a hot tub.

Great value

Overall, we loved our stay at the Hyatt Mission Bay. We had a suite overlooking the marina and couldn't have picked a better view. There was plenty of space for our family of three. Our little one was very happy in the portable crib, and our bed was very comfortable. The lobby and all general areas were beautiful and well maintained. We had breakfast and coffee at Einstein's most days and enjoyed it. We also had dinner and breakfast at the Red Marlin and thought it was good as well. Sadly, trying to get an appointment at the spa was a mess! I tried twice to make an appointment (in person) for a massage and pedicure and, even when I asked specifically what the next available appointment was, they kept telling me just to call when I was ready to come. Finally, on the third day, I gave them a specific time I wanted to come and they told me that the pedicurist's last day was the first day I had come in and that's why they had evaded my questions. I would have greatly appreciated being told that in the first place. It would have saved me a lot of time and a couple of trips down there. The pool area was great. Even though it was pretty chilly, it was a great place to hang out, and the hot tub helped when we got too cold. The wait staff around the pool was very attentive. The only things wrong with the room itself had to do with housekeeping/maintenance. There was mold all over the air conditioning vents and all three of us were coughing and congested by the third day. The decor was a little tired, too. There was one lamp that didn't work and one with a lampshade that had been badly burned all over and not replaced. Our room was never really clean either. It was presentable at first glance, but more and more things were noticed the longer we were there. Our glasses weren't cleaned, just turned over each day. The patio and its furniture were really filthy--bird droppings, stains, burn holes, etc.--and it was never cleaned while we were there. And the blinds were so dusty that my almost-two-year-old actually took a washcloth and cleaned them (and most other things in the room) one day. When I asked him what he was doing, he said, "I clean. Dirty!" I think that about sums it up. On a more positive note, the location was great. The hotel is very close to Sea World. There's even a water taxi from the hotel! I should note, though, that the fireworks from Sea World (while great to watch from the Red Marlin or the front of the hotel) were very loud in the room, so if you have light sleepers, that might be an issue. It wasn't for us, though. The hotel is also an easy drive to the beaches, Torrey Pines, PETCO Park (downtown), and the San Diego Zoo. All in all, we would come back. For a very decent price, you get a large room overlooking the water in a great location. I just hope they improve their housekeeping and spa staff before we return.

Would go back

We were in the suites, which had apparently been refurbished. The room was fine, but you could see some areas where they hadn't refurbished (e.g. our bath was obviously an old one with chips). I can't comment on the tower though. The staff were really helpful throughout; the Red Marlin restaurant was delicious and in a nice setting. Yes, it's a little pricey, but you're in a hotel restaurant overlooking the water, so what do you expect? The water slides were great. One word of advice - don't go if you don't have kids. This is obviously going to be a hotel that has a lot of children due to its proximity to sea world and the water slides in the pool.
